Description of a family with a novel progressive myoclonus epilepsy and cognitive impairment.

We report a family of Algerian origin presenting an unusual, severe form of progressive myoclonus epilepsy characterized by myoclonus, generalized tonic-clonic seizures and moderate to severe cognitive impairment, with probable autosomal recessive inheritance. Disease onset was between 6 and 16 years of age. The diagnosis of Unverricht-Lundborg disease and all other known causes of progressive myoclonus epilepsies were excluded by specific laboratory tests and molecular analysis.

High frequency and diversity of Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) in Algerian healthcare settings.

The spread of vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) in Algerian hospital settings is poorly reported. Since the first report in 2006, few data have been available on the molecular mechanism of this resistance across the country. In this study, we investigate the frequency and antibiotic resistance mechanisms of Enterococci strains isolated from hospitalised patients in the Tlemcen university hospital. 191 Enterococcus spp. strains were collected from various clinical samples and were identified using MALDI-TOF-MS. The presence of van genes was investigated by standard PCR and sequencing. Resu

Frequency of the 35delG allele causing nonsyndromic recessive deafness in the Algerian patients.

Deafness is a heterogeneous disorder showing different patterns of inheritance and involving a multitude of different genes. Mutations in the GJB2 gene encoding connexin 26 (Cx26) protein are a major cause for non-syndromic autosomal recessive and sporadic deafness. Among these mutations, the c.35delG deletion is the most common mutation for sensorineural deafness. One hundred sixteen persons from fifty-eight families were tested by the method based on the principle of PCR-mediated-site-directed mutagenesis (PSDM), followed by a Bsl1 digestion. Mutation c.35delG was diagnosed in sixteen famili

Comparative valorization of olive pomace via ZnCl2 and H3PO4 activation: toward high-performance adsorbents for phenol removal.

This study focuses on the valorization of olive pomace from an olive oil extraction industry in Kabylia (Algeria) for the sustainable production of high performance activated carbons. Olive pomace was chemically activated using ZnCl2 and H3PO4, followed by carbonization at 500 °C, yielding OP-AC(ZC) and OP-AC(PA) respectively. This work presents a novel comparative approach by evaluating two widely used activating agents under identical preparation conditions, allowing a direct assessment of their influence on the physicochemical properties and adsorption performance of the resulting materials

Pelargonium graveolens essential oil against clinical Candida and reference isolates: insights into virulence inhibition and therapeutic perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The rising incidence of Candida-associated infections and persistent antifungal resistance, driven by biofilm formation, highlight the need for alternative therapies. Essential oils offer promise as multi-targeted natural antifungals. This study evaluates the antifungal activity of Pelargonium graveolens essential oil (PGEO), obtained by hydrodistillation of aerial parts from the Edough region (Annaba, Algeria), against various Candida species and its effects on human cells. METHODS: PGEO (yield: 0.23 ± 0.04% w/w) was characterized by GC-MS. Its antifungal activity was tested agai

A compilation of ticks and tick-borne pathogen distributions in seven countries within North and West Africa from 1901 to 2022: a systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Ticks continue to represent a significant threat to human and animal health worldwide. In the absence of comprehensive databases that compile the current published records of tick diversity and distributions, the information from hundreds of articles remains in isolation, incapable of being easily incorporated into surveillance gap analyses and tick-borne pathogen risk modeling. Here, our group systematically reviews and extracts data from published studies that detail ticks collected within seven target countries in North and West Africa. METHODS: We conducted a systematic litera

[The epidemiology of trench fever: a pilot study in homeless people in Marseilles].

Trench fever, cause by Bartonella quintana, disappeared decades ago. Between 1992 and 1994 about 20 cases were reported in industrialized countries [6, 7]. Some of these cases were associated with HIV infection [5], but most affected the homeless. The epidemiology of B. quintana is unknown in Europe, but infection and transmission are favoured by poor housing and hygiene. This paper describes the results of a seroprevalence survey among the homeless living in Marseille. The eight major non-profit organizations caring for the homeless in the city participated for the four winter months. Four of

[Yellow fever in Western Africa, 1973-1987. Observed facts--studies realized, campaign, prevention and forecast].

This global analysis of the situation is based on a review of notifications, observations and studies concerning yellow fever in 16 of 17 countries of the West African subregion (Algeria is not affected for the years 1973-1987). In view of this analysis and the epidemiological picture, the author proposes a plan of concerted action to confine yellow fever to its monkey-to-monkey cycle in the wild. Official notifications vary greatly from one country to the next. Any of five major causes could explain this: ecological and ethological conditions that favour circulation of the virus in the wild a

Diagnostic outcomes of the 2023 race-neutral and 2012 race-specific global lung function initiative spirometry equations in healthy Algerian adults: a cross-sectional comparative analysis.

In 2023, the Global Lung Function Initiative (GLI) introduced race-neutral spirometric reference equations (2023-GLI-RNEs) to address concerns of racial bias inherent in earlier 2012-GLI race-specific models. While the 2012-GLI Caucasian equations (2012-GLI-CEs) were previously identified to reflect contemporary adults' Algerian spirometry, the 2023-GLI-RNEs applicability remains untested. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic outcomes of the 2023-GLI-RNEs and the 2012-GLI-CEs in a healthy adult Algerian population. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 488 Algerian healthy adults (49.
