Anisometropia in children: Current understanding and clinical implications.

Anisometropia in children, defined as an interocular refractive difference of at least 1.0 diopter, is a major risk factor for unilateral amblyopia and a significant disruptor of binocular vision. The underlying structural cause is typically asymmetric axial growth, reflecting a breakdown in the normally coordinated process of emmetropization. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on its epidemiology, pathophysiology, associated factors, and management. The condition follows a dynamic age-related pattern: it is prevalent in infancy, declines during early childhood as emmetropizatio…

Astrocyte activation in the cat dLGN following monocular retinal inactivation.

Monocular deprivation obstructs the development of visual neural circuits and can impair vision for a lifetime. Effective treatment of this visual disorder, amblyopia, with patching therapy is limited by a short and early critical period, as well as by poor compliance with prescribed treatment. Temporary pharmacological inactivation of the dominant eye has emerged as a means to rapidly correct the effects of monocular deprivation in animal models. Recovery occurs at older ages, and inactivation causes no apparent damage to neural connections within the primary visual pathway. It is unclear wha…

Pediatric limbal stem cell deficiency: An overview of a rarely studied pathology.

The cornea is the outermost transparent layer of the eye, and the continuous renewal of the corneal epithelium is important for its transpar … on, as it can lead to corneal vascularization, opacity and ultimately loss of vision and subsequent amblyopia, unlike adults. Although pediatric LSCD is often due to chemical injuries, as in adults, it is also caused by conditions such as congenital aniridia, Steven Johnson Syndrome and various other immunological disorders. Appropriate and timely treatment …

Childhood Eye Examination in Primary Care.

Approximately 7% of children in the United States younger than 18 years have a diagnosed eye disorder, and 1 in 4 children between two and 17 years of age wears glasses. Routine eye examinations during childhood can identify abnormalities necessitating referral to ophthalmology, which optimizes children's vision through the early diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends vision screening at least once in children three to five years of age to detect amblyopia or its risk factors to improve visual acuity. The American Academy of Family Physicia…

[Ocular findings associated with hypertelorism].

PURPOSE: To show that in hypertelorism (a horizontal orbital dystopia in which interorbital distance is increased) there are various ophthalmologic abnormalities associated: strabismus, nystagmus, amblyopia, refractive errors, palpebral malpositions, lacrimal system imperforation, fundoscopic and anterior segment lesions. We want to show that the frequence and severity of ophthalmic findings are associated to the severity of hypertelorism. But the evolution and treatment of ocular findings is independent from the treatment of this orbital dystopia. METHODS: We have studied 12 cases of hyperte…

High-Frequency Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Improves Oxidative Stress, Iron Metabolism, and Synaptic Plasticity in the Visual Cortex of Amblyopic Rats: Association With the NRF2/GPX4 Pathway.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder with limited treatment efficacy after the developmental critical period. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) improves visual perception in patients with amblyopia, although its specific mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we investigated whether rTMS improves abnormal ocular dominance (OD) distribution in monocular deprivation (MD) amblyopic rats by modulating oxidative stress, iron metabolism, and synaptic plasticity through the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2/glutathione peroxidase-4 (NRF2/GPX4) pathway.…
