Dapoxetine and the treatment of premature ejaculation.

BACKGROUND: Premature ejaculation (PE) is the most common male sexual complaint. Off-label oral selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly prescribed for the treatment of PE. Dapoxetine is a short-acting SSRI specifically designed for on-demand use. The objective of this communication is to summarize the clinical and physiological evidence regarding the role of the serotonergic pathway and specifically dapoxetine in the treatment of PE. METHODS: A PubMed search was conducted on articles reporting data on dapoxetine for the treatment of PE. Articles describing the pathophysio

Can ω-3 fatty acids and tocotrienol-rich vitamin E reduce symptoms of neurodevelopmental disorders?

The incidence of childhood neurodevelopmental disorders, which include autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorders, and apraxia, are increasing worldwide and have a profound effect on the behaviors, cognitive skills, mood, and self-esteem of these children. Although the etiologies of these disorders are unclear, they often accompany genetic and biochemical abnormalities resulting in cognitive and communication difficulties. Because cognitive and neural development require essential fatty acids (particularly long-chain ω-3 fatty acids often lacking in mother's and children's diets) during

[Physiopathology of overactive bladder syndrome].

The pathophysiology of OAB is complex, multifactorial and still largely unknown. Several pathophysiological mechanisms have been highlighted that may play a different role in different patient groups. There are now experimental evidences that support both the myogenic and neurogenic hypothesis, but in recent years the "integrative" hypothesis has been gaining more and more acceptance, where a disruption in the multiple interactions between different cell types (neurons, urothelium, interstitial cells, myocytes) and network functions represent a central element of lower urinary tract dysfunctio

Surveillance in eradication and elimination of infectious diseases: a progression through the years.

During the years since certification of smallpox eradication, the power of infectious disease surveillance has been greatly increased by new biotechnical and electronic technologies. These technologies have transformed the way that surveillance can be used to contribute to public health, and to infectious disease eradication and elimination. In addition to permitting precise geographical placement of infections by incorporating the most up to date geographical positioning systems, infectious disease surveillance can now also provide more comprehensive understanding of the spread and risks of i

Fetal alcohol syndrome and the developing socio-emotional brain.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is currently recognized as the most common known cause of mental retardation, affecting from 1 to 7 per 1000 live-born infants. Individuals with FAS suffer from changes in brain structure, cognitive impairments, and behavior problems. Researchers investigating neuropsychological functioning have identified deficits in learning, memory, executive functioning, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and poor communication and social skills in individuals with FAS and fetal alcohol effects (FAE). Investigators using autopsy and brain imaging methods have identified microcephaly a

Safety monitoring in vaccine development and immunization.

The development of vaccines has been one of the most important achievement in preventive medicine. As the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases is reduced by immunization, general public becomes increasingly concerned about the safety associated with vaccine. Vaccine safety is extensively evaluated through animal safety studies, clinical trials, during manufacturing processes, and postlicensure surveillance. Safety monitoring in postlicensure surveillance has relied on passive reporting system and epidemiological studies, including Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VARES), Vaccine Sa

Animal models of restricted repetitive behavior in autism.

Restricted, repetitive behavior, along with deficits in social reciprocity and communication, is diagnostic of autism. Animal models relevant to this domain generally fall into three classes: repetitive behavior associated with targeted insults to the CNS; repetitive behavior induced by pharmacological agents; and repetitive behavior associated with restricted environments and experience. The extant literature provides potential models of the repetitive behavioral phenotype in autism rather than attempts to model the etiology or pathophysiology of restricted, repetitive behavior, as these are

[Implications of the Barker hypothesis for general practitioners].

The Barker hypothesis states that there are foetal origins of adult disease. The hypothesis is primarily based on epidemiological associations between indicators of foetal malnutrition and mortality and morbidity in adulthood. The first association reported was between birth weight and coronary heart disease. Similar associations were found between birth weight and stroke, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, serum lipids, and premature pubarche. In non-industrialized countries the associations appear to be even stronger. Although the Barker hypothesis has been criticize

The Effect of Animated Videos on Adolescent Awareness of Sexual Health Risks and HIV Prevention.

Adolescents face heightened vulnerability to reproductive health risks, including premarital sex, HIV, and substance abuse. This quasi-experimental study assessed the effectiveness of an animated video intervention in improving adolescent knowledge of these threats. Using an equivalent time-series design, 75 adolescents from Bojongloa Kidul District, Bandung, Indonesia, viewed an 8-minute animated video on premarital sex, HIV, and drug use for three consecutive days (April-June 2024). Knowledge was measured at baseline and three post-intervention points. The proportion with "good" knowledge ro

Urinary Tract Infection in a Small Animal Model: Transurethral Catheterization of Male and Female Mice.

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are extremely common worldwide, incurring significant morbidity and healthcare-associated expenses. Small animal models, which accurately reflect disease establishment and progression, permit dissection of host-pathogen interactions and generation of immunity to infection. In mice, intravesical instillation of uropathogenic E. coli, the causative agent in more than 85% of community acquired UTI, recapitulates many of the stages of infection observed in humans. Until recently, however, UTI could only be modeled in female animals. This limitation has hindered the s

Enhancing Surveillance and Diagnostics in Anthrax-Endemic Countries.

Naturally occurring anthrax disproportionately affects the health and economic welfare of poor, rural communities in anthrax-endemic countries. However, many of these countries have limited anthrax prevention and control programs. Effective prevention of anthrax outbreaks among humans is accomplished through routine livestock vaccination programs and prompt response to animal outbreaks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention uses a 2-phase framework when providing technical assistance to partners in anthrax-endemic countries. The first phase assesses and identifies areas for improvemen

The role of individual differences in lipoprotein, artery wall, gender, and behavioral responses in the development of atherosclerosis.

Striking individual differences exist in the response of animals to atherogenic diets. In this communication, we have summarized the accumulated data that relate to a better understanding of this individuality in susceptibility to atherosclerosis. Described herein, are the accumulated data concerning individual differences in the ways in which animals respond to dietary cholesterol. Also contained in this review, are beginning efforts to understand individual differences in susceptibility to coronary artery atherosclerosis at the level of the artery wall ("mesenchymal susceptibility"). We have

The soil microorganism Bacillus amyloliquefaciens N3-8 shows potential as a biocontrol agent against the pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei and its effect on rice plantation.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a saprophytic bacterium responsible for melioidosis in humans and animals. In this study, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens N3-8 was applied as a biocontrol agent on sterile soil spiked with 107 colony-forming unit (CFU) per gram of B. pseudomallei p37 at two ratios: 1:10,000 and 1:100,000 CFU/g soil. Both treatments significantly reduced B. pseudomallei by 4-5 logs within 4 weeks. A subsequent experiment applied the 1:10,000 ratio to 10 kg of natural soil in a pot containing 102-103 CFU/g of B. pseudomallei alongside rice cultivation. Bacterial counts, rice yield, soil p

Total protein intake and subsequent risk of chronic kidney disease: the Circulatory Risk in Communities Study.

BACKGROUND: Whether dietary protein intake worsens renal function in the general population has been discussed but not yet determined. We aimed to examine the longitudinal association between dietary protein intake and risk of incident chronic kidney disease (CKD). METHODS: We conducted a 12-year follow-up study with 3,277 Japanese adults (1,150 men and 2,127 women) aged 40-74 years, initially free from CKD, who participated in cardiovascular risk surveys from two Japanese communities under the Circulatory Risk in Communities Study. The development of CKD was defined by the estimated glomerul

Antibiotic Resistance Genes and Bacterial Communities of Farmed Rainbow Trout Fillets (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

The rise of antibiotic resistance is not only a challenge for human and animal health treatments, but is also posing the risk of spreading among bacterial populations in foodstuffs. Farmed fish-related foodstuffs, the food of animal origin most consumed worldwide, are suspected to be a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes and resistant bacterial hazards. However, scant research has been devoted to the possible sources of diversity in fresh fillet bacterial ecosystems (farm environment including rivers and practices, and factory environment). In this study bacterial communities and the anti

Community perceptions of health and rodent-borne diseases along the Inter-Oceanic Highway in Madre de Dios, Peru.

BACKGROUND: Madre de Dios is located in the southeastern Amazonian region of Peru. Rodents have been estimated to be the reservoirs for up to 50 % of emerging zoonotic pathogens, including a host of viruses, bacteria, and parasites. As part of a larger study involving both human and animal research, this study serves to obtain a broader understanding of the key challenges and concerns related to health and rodent-borne illnesses from the perspective of the people living in these communities. METHODS: We used a mixed methods approach, which comprised of 12 focus group discussions, 34 key infor

Exploring the underlying mechanisms of exercise as therapy for multiple sclerosis: insights from preclinical studies.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system CNS characterized by demyelination, inflammation, and neurodegenerative changes, making it the most common nontraumatic disabling neurological disease in young adults. While current pharmacological treatments primarily target immunomodulation or immunosuppression, exercise is gaining increasing attention from the scientific community as an adjunctive therapy. This review explores the potential biological mechanisms of exercise in animal models of MS, focusing on its effects on neuroprotection and inflammation.
