Between 1973 and 1983, 18 patients with "high" anorectal anomalies were treated by one of the authors (N.V.F.) by immediate sigmoid loop-colostomy, followed by a sacroperineal or abdominosacroperineal pull-through operation as soon as possible thereafter. This was performed in seven patients between 1 and 14 days, in seven patients between 15 and 40 days, and in four patients between 60 and 120 days. Thirty five patients with anorrectal malformations are reviewed. These are divided in high and low anomalies according to some simple clinical data, better than the drawing of reference lines to determinate the height of puborrectalis muscle. Three cases of N-type anorectal malformations have been encountered. Lactose and protein absorption from breast milk and a cow's milk preparation enriched up to 7% of lactose were studied in two infants with an artificial anus applied in the ascending colon region. Congenital pouch colon is an anomaly always associated with anorectal malformation, where the colon is replaced by or terminates into a large aperistaltic intestinal pouch. Vertebral anomalies leading to neurogenic bladder are rare associated malformations. The pouch is aperistaltic and thus a poor rectal substitute but this very property makes it ideal for bladder augmentation. We report the first case where the pouch has been used to augment a high-pressure neurogenic bladder.

Trisomy 13 syndrome is a rare disorder that carries a high mortality rate due to abnormal prenatal development resulting in serious birth defects. Although genitourinary malformations are commonly seen in trisomy 13 syndrome, to our knowledge, the association of cloacal exstrophy with trisomy 13 has been extremely rarely reported. Herein, a newborn with trisomy 13 syndrome having multiple congenital anomalies, including cloacal exstrophy, is presented, and the importance of structural anomalies of the neutrophilic leukocytes on a blood smear in supporting diagnosis of trisomy 13 is discussed.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Disease-specific quality of life (QoL) may be more or less relevant when children enter preadolescence/adolescence. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Despite technical advances in the surgical/medical care of anorectal malformation (ARM), persistent unsatisfactory postoperative bowel habit has been attributed to histopathologic abnormalities of the distal rectum/pouch (DRP) and hypoplasia of anal sphincter muscles (ASM).
