Scurvy is the clinical manifestation of a deficiency in vitamin C, which is present in fresh fruits and vegetables. It is historically linked to the era of great maritime expeditions. Manifestations are misleading in children, in contrast with adults: bone disease and hemorrhagic syndrome are the earliest and most frequent manifestations due to a collagen biosynthesis defect. Scurvy is an old, potentially fatal disease but is easily curable with ascorbic acid. It can be prevented with vitamin C treatment in pediatric populations with unusual eating habits. We describe two cases of pediatric sc

The presence of central cyanosis that is unrelated to cardiopulmonary causes alerts clinicians to a possible diagnosis of methemoglobinemia. Congenital methemoglobinemia due to deficiency of nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide (NADH)-cytochrome b5 reductase (cb(5)r) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by life long cyanosis. Here we report a six-year old boy who presented with central cyanosis and upon examination revealed a methemoglobin level of 19.0%. Sequencing the CYB5R3 gene identified a homozygous T-->C transition at base c.653, which changed codon 218 from leucine to proline

Cigarette smoking is one of the major public health problems of our times. Smokers are damaged by free radicals formed during smoking. The antioxidant capacity of smokers is reduced. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) deficiency in heavy smokers with a total cholesterol more than 6.7 mmol/l ranges from 35-55%. It is mediated by smoking, by its low dietary intake by preferential high dietary intake of saturated and unsaturated fats. Vitamin C is an important water soluble antioxidant, therefore its intake can at least partially reduce the unfavourable effect of smoking caused by the attack of free radic

Selenium and vitamin E interrelationships in the nutrition of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) were investigated in a 26-wk experiment. A purified basal diet alone or supplemented with 0.2 mg/kg selenium, 50 mg/kg vitamin E or both was fed to fingerling channel catfish in aquaria. Combined deficiencies of selenium and vitamin E caused suppressed growth, anemia, severe myopathy, exudative diathesis and death. Singular deficiencies of either selenium or vitamin E did not produce any of these deficiency signs. Catfish fed selenium-deficient diets with or without supplemental vitamin E had re

The interpretation of cribra orbitalia as an isolated skeletal lesion is mainly based on malnutrition, in particular in terms of iron deficiency or vitamin C deficiency. A chronic iron deficiency anemia should result in both a reduced iron content of the skeleton and an underhydroxylation of the amino acid proline with the consequence of a less stable collagen matrix of the bone. The latter holds also for a vitamin C deficiency. Trace element and amino acid analyses were independently applied to subsamples of two early medieval human skeletal series to test whether a relation between cribra or

The relations of nutritional factors to lead accumulation in the body were examined cross-sectionally among 747 men aged 49-93 years (mean 67 years) in the Normative Aging Study in 1991-1995. Means (standard deviations) for blood lead, tibia lead, and patella lead were 6.2 (4.1) microg/dl, 21.9 (13.3) microg/g, and 32.0 (19.5) microg/g, respectively. In multiple regression models adjusting for age, education level, smoking, and alcohol consumption, men in the lowest quintile of total dietary intake levels of vitamin D (including vitamin supplements) (<179 i.u./day) had mean tibia and patella l

Chromium is an essential trace element in mammals since dietary chromium deficiency results in glucose intolerance due to decreased sensitivity to insulin. In humans, both adults and children with glucose intolerance have been improved by treatment with chromium. Furthermore, chromium deficiency has been implicated as a causative factor in hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis. However, little is known of the metabolism of chromium in humans, primarily because of analytical difficulties. The biologically active form of chromium is the "glucose tolerance factor" (GTF) which is a co-ordinatio

OBJECTIVES: To determine the antioxidant levels of subrural Nigerian population where pre-eclampsia and eclampsia is the leading cause of maternal mortality.
METHODS: Prospective case control study done at Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital Irrua, Edo State, Nigeria. Plasma level of vitamin C and E were evaluated in 80 pre-eclamptic patientswhich were compared with normotensive 80 pregnant women matched as controls.
RESULTS: Pre-eclampsia was associated with significant reduction in levels of vitamin C and E (p < 0.05). However, the correlation betwe

The regulatory functions of vitamins are described with particular reference to their importance in the metabolic processes of ageing. Although clear hypovitaminosis is uncommon, slight vitamin deficiencies are often encountered in the clinical practice. They cause a speed up of the organism deterioration. The nutritional requirement and the effect of vitamin A, B1, B6, B12, are rapidly reviewed. More attention is paid to the data about vitamin C, D and E. Vitamin C deficiency in elderly, especially in the hospitalized ones; whereas a high content of ascorbic acid in necessary in order to exte

As long as cribra orbitalia manifests itself as an isolated skeletal lesion in excavated human skeletons, it is mostly diagnosed as being of nutritional origin, especially iron deficiency anemia. Since both iron and vitamin C function as cofactors at the hydroxylation of the amino acids proline and lysine in collagen, both amino acid analyses of bone collagen and the determination of bone mineral iron content was carried out at ten medieval skeletons with cribra orbitalia, opposed to ten morphologically healthy individuals from the same skeletal series. The skeletons with cribra orbitalia were

In modern times scurvy is a rarely encountered disease caused by ascorbic acid (vitamin C) deficiency. However, sporadic cases of scurvy persist, particularly within the pediatric population. Recent individual case reports highlight an increased incidence of scurvy among patients with autism or developmental delay, with isolated case reports detailing the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of scurvy in these pediatric populations. We present the MRI findings of scurvy in four patients with autism or developmental delay, and review the literature on MRI findings in pediatric patients wit

The authors have studied the ways of correcting the vitamin status and influence of vitaminization on working capacity in workwomen in light industry. Prophylactic polyvitaminization (1 dragee of "Undevitum"/day, during 2 months) proved to produce positive effect on the vitamin status parameters (vitamin content in the blood and urine, clinical microsymptoms of vitamin deficiency), and on the dynamics of the physiological parameters of working capacity of workwomen at modern conveyer shoe making industry. It is recommended that persons suffering from chronic diseases influencing vitamin metabo

Experiments were made on rats to study the effect of protein deficiency, amino acid unbalance and vitamin B1, A, E, C deficiency on the weight gain of rats, on the eating up of feed, the blood content of nitrogenous components and their excretion with urine and feces. The feeding of the diets deficient in protein, essential amino acids and vitamins leads to substantial changes in nitrogenous metabolism. Such alimentary disorders are followed by the reduced assimilability and biological value of food proteins.

The amino acid composition of collagen is described and the status of knowledge about the synthesis of its unique amino acids, hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine, presented. This is followed by a schematic overview of collagen metabolism. Scurvy and lathyrism, the only two abnormalities of collagen metabolism which can now be reasonably elucidated at a molecular level, are then discussed in some detail. The paper concludes by stressing the importance of recognizing the role of histoarchitecture and of interactions of collagen with other compounds when studying collagen or its metabolism in the w
