Determinants of low fifth minute Apgar score among newborns delivered by cesarean section at Wolaita Sodo University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Southern Ethiopia: an unmatched case control study.

BACKGROUND: Apgar score is used to evaluate the neonates' overall status and response to resuscitation, as well as its prognosis beyond the neonatal period. Low fifth minute Apgar scores is more frequent and is associated with markedly increased risks of neonatal mortality and morbidity. In Ethiopia, the prevalence of birth asphyxia is high (22.52%). Birth asphyxia contributes to significant neonatal morbidities and mortalities due to severe hypoxic-ischemic multi-organ damage, mainly brain damage. Therefore, this study was aimed to identify determinants of low fifth minute Apgar score among n

[Neonatal auditory screening with automated ABR].

UNLABELLED: To detect infant hearing disorders at the earliest stage, we use an ABR screener with natus-ALGO2e (AABR). We evaluated AABR eff … ntional ABR examination. These cases had severe risk factors such as marked low weight at delivery, asphyxia neonatorum, and long-term respiratory control problems. Two ears of 1 infant gave no response bilaterally in conventional ABR at the age of 1 year and 2 months. CONCLUSION: AABR screening is compact, speedy, and more risk-free than conventional ABR, but discr …

Neonatal mortality and associated factors among neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care unit at public hospitals of Somali Regional State, Eastern Ethiopia: A multicenter retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal mortality remains a public health problem in the developing world. Globally, around 2.5 million neonatal deaths are reported annually with the highest mortality concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. In comparison with countries demonstrating the lowest neonatal mortality, the risk of mortality is over 30 times higher in sub-Saharan Africa. Ethiopia is among the countries with a high neonatal mortality rate, and the burden of this mortality remains unreported in many pastoralist areas such as Somali Regional State, Eastern Ethiopia. We aimed to investigate fact

Lung injury after asphyxia and hemorrhagic shock in newborn piglets: Analysis of structural and inflammatory changes.

OBJECTIVE: Asphyxia of newborns is a severe and frequent challenge of the peri- and postnatal period. The purpose of this study was to study early morphological, immunological and structural alterations in lung tissue after asphyxia and hemorrhage (AH). METHODS: 44 neonatal piglets (age 32 hrs) underwent asphyxia and hemorrhage (AH) and were treated according to the international liaison committee of resuscitation (ILCOR) guidelines. For this study, 15 piglets (blood transfusion (RBC) n = 9; NaCl n = 6, mean age 31 hrs) were randomly picked. 4 hours after ROSC (return of spontaneous circulati

Predictors of neonatal mortality among neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Sidama regional state, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Despite promising efforts, substantial deaths occurred during the neonatal period. According to estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), Ethiopia is among the top 10 nations with the highest number of neonatal deaths in 2020 alone. This staggering amount makes it difficult to achieve the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) target that calls for all nations to work hard to meet a neonatal mortality rate target of ≤ 12 deaths per 1,000 live births by 2030. We evaluated neonatal mortality and it's contributing factors among newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care U

[A multicenter study on the risk factors for in-hospital mortality in neonates with severe asphyxia at tertiary hospitals in Henan Province].

OBJECTIVES: To construct a risk prediction model for in-hospital mortality in neonates with severe asphyxia. METHODS: A total of 836 neonates with severe asphyxia admitted to 20 tertiary hospitals in Henan Province between January 2022 and December 2025 were retrospectively enrolled and divided into a death group (n=267) and a survival group (n=569) according to outcome. Birth characteristics, resuscitation measures, and early complications were analyzed. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify risk factors, and a nomogram prediction model was developed. Receiver operating char

Long-term region-specific mitochondrial respiration impairment after perinatal asphyxia is prevented by the NAD⁺ donor nicotinamide riboside: A real-time organotypic metabolic profiling approach.

Perinatal asphyxia (PA) is a primary cause of neonatal morbidity, with persistent neurological sequelae, associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and redox imbalance. The lack of experimental approaches for region-specific evaluation of mitochondrial bioenergetics in structurally preserved neural tissues has limited the identification of selective vulnerabilities and redox-based therapeutic targets. Here, we introduce a real-time metabolic profiling strategy that integrates Seahorse XFe96 respirometry with Cytation 5 image-based quality control to quantify mitochondrial respiration and glycol

Neonatal PBPK model of midazolam and its metabolites for perinatal asphyxia and therapeutic hypothermia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) decreases morbidity and mortality in neonates with perinatal asphyxia (PA) and moderate-to-severe hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. Midazolam is an antiepileptic and substrate of CYP3A4. Drug metabolism during PA/TH remains partially characterized, and disentangling effects of PA and TH is difficult, making precision dosing challenging. The I-PREDICT project aims to develop a framework for drug disposition in PA/TH neonates, using physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modelling. The predictive performance of the model was explored for

Progression of the estimated glomerular filtration rate in asphyxiated neonates undergoing therapeutic hypothermia during the first 10 days of life.

BACKGROUND: Serum creatinine (Scr) centile values were recently described in a cohort of 1136 (near)-term neonates that underwent therapeutic hypothermia (TH) because of moderate to severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Recent methodological progress enables conversion of these Scr centiles to estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values. METHODS: Scr centiles in the TH dataset during the first 10 days of life were converted to eGFR values, using the Schwartz formula, with the Smeets k-value (0.31) and fixed body length (50 cm) to generate postnatal reference eGFR values, centiles, an

Measuring the time it takes to achieve full oral feeding can be used as a low-resource tool to assess neurologic recovery after perinatal asphyxia.

The aims of this prospective study were to describe feeding difficulties in term infants with perinatal asphyxia and to determine whether the time it takes to achieve full oral feeding correlates with early neurological outcome in a high-income setting. Recruitment included 52 term infants with perinatal asphyxia: 32 without hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE), 9 with mild HIE, and 11 with moderate HIE. The time in days it takes to achieve full oral independent feeding was used as a marker of feeding difficulty. Early neurological outcome was evaluated using neonatal brain magnetic resonanc

Networks of cortical activity show graded responses to perinatal asphyxia.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal asphyxia often leads to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) with a high risk of neurodevelopmental consequences. While moderate and severe HIE link to high morbidity, less is known about brain effects of perinatal asphyxia with no or only mild HIE. Here, we test the hypothesis that cortical activity networks in the newborn infants show a dose-response to asphyxia. METHODS: We performed EEG recordings for infants with perinatal asphyxia/HIE of varying severity (n = 52) and controls (n = 53) and examined well-established computational metrics of cortical network activity
