Recent Advances in the Surgical Management of Radiation-Induced Fractures following Soft Tissue Sarcomas.

Background: Post-radiation fractures are a significant complication of cancer treatment, often being challenging to manage and impacting patients' quality of life. This study systematically reviews the literature on fractures in irradiated bones, focusing on risk factors, treatment modalities, and prevention strategies. Factors increasing fracture risk include exposure to high doses of radiation of at least 50 Gy, female gender, menopausal age, and periosteal stripping. Additionally further risk factors are the size of the original tumor and osteoporosis. Methods: A search of PubMed yielded 54

Radiation exposure during angiographic interventions in interventional radiology - risk and fate of advanced procedures.

PURPOSE: Advanced angiographic procedures in interventional radiology are becoming more important and are more frequently used, especially in the treatment of several acute life-threatening diseases like stroke or aortic injury. In recent years, technical advancement has led to a broader spectrum of interventions and complex procedures with longer fluoroscopy times. This involves the risk of higher dose exposures, which, in rare cases, may cause deterministic radiation effects, e.g. erythema in patients undergoing angiographic procedures. Against this background, these procedures recently also

Sox9-expressing cells promote regeneration after radiation-induced lung injury via the PI3K/AKT pathway.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) is considered one of the most common complications of thoracic radiation. Recent studies have focused on stem cell properties to obtain ideal therapeutic effects, and Sox9 has been reported to be involved in stem cell induction and differentiation. However, whether Sox9-expressing cells play a role in radiation repair and regeneration remains unknown. METHODS: We successfully obtained Sox9CreER, RosatdTomato and RosaDTA mice and identified Sox9-expressing cells through lineage tracing. Then, we evaluated the effects of the ablation of Sox9-expr

The use of planar high-purity Ge detectors for in vivo measurement of low-energy photon emitters.

Multiple planar high-purity Ge detectors have been used for the past year to detect, localize and quantify several radionuclides in radiation workers. The advantages of these detectors over NaI(Tl), phoswich, and arrays of planar Ge detectors attached to a single cryostat are illustrated by the results of the measurements of 238Pu, 239Pu, 241Am, 210Pb, 144Ce, 125I, U and 154Eu in exposed radiation workers. The main advantages are a more positive identification of radionuclides, greater sensitivity, and less interference from higher energy gamma rays that might be present in the body. The incre

Intraoperative Real-Time Near-Infrared Image-Guided Surgery to Identify Necrotic Tissues.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: The usefulness of intraoperative real-time fluorescence navigation using indocyanine green (ICG) for metastatic brain tumors, schwannomas, and meningiomas is well established. However, its application in cases of radiation-induced brain necrosis remains unexplored. Surgical intervention is performed in symptomatic and medically refractory cases; however, radiation-necrotic lesions often exhibit a diffuse pattern with unclear surgical boundaries, making it challenging for surgeons to identify the lesion during the surgery. METHODS: Four patients with intracranial nec

Radiopharmaceutical therapy provides superior survival advantage for leptomeningeal metastasis compared to external beam radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Leptomeningeal metastasis from a solid tumor carries a dismal prognosis with median survival of 3-5 months after diagnosis and treatment with external beam radiation therapy. It targets the whole-brain or the entire central nervous system depending on disease extent, and is the current standard therapeutic approach, however, its effectiveness is limited by insufficient cytotoxicity and severe off target radiotoxicity. METHODS: Radiopharmaceutical therapy is a promising strategy to deliver therapeutic radiation doses directly to the leptomeningeal space while minimizing damage to t

GSDME knockout alleviates hematopoietic stem cell irradiation injury and aggravates myeloid-biased differentiation.

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow (BM) suppression is the most prevalent dose-limiting side effect of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) results in acute BM suppression and long-term BM injury. Gasdermin E (GSDME) is crucial for mediating apoptosis and pyroptosis during chemotherapy. However, its role in radiation-induced hematopoietic injury is not well established. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the role of GSDME on radiation-induced hematopoietic injury. METHODS: We established hematopoietic radiation injury models in C57BL/6 mice and Gsdme-/- mice. The peripheral
