Environmental Drivers of Monkeypox Transmission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Monkeypox (MPX) is an emergent severe zoonotic disease resembling that of smallpox. To date, most cases of human MPX have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). While the number of cases has increased steadily in the DRC over the last 30 years, the environmental risk factors that drive the spatiotemporal dynamics of MPX transmission remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal associations between environmental risk factors and annual MPX incidence in the DRC. All MPX cases reported weekly at the health zone level over a 16-year period (200

Measuring the effects of COVID-19-related disruption on dengue transmission in southeast Asia and Latin America: a statistical modelling study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented disruption to society, which indirectly affects infectious disease dynamics. We aimed to assess the effects of COVID-19-related disruption on dengue, a major expanding acute public health threat, in southeast Asia and Latin America. METHODS: We assembled data on monthly dengue incidence from WHO weekly reports, climatic data from ERA5, and population variables from WorldPop for 23 countries between January, 2014 and December, 2019 and fit a Bayesian regression model to explain and predict seasonal and multi-year dengue cycles. We

Yearly variations of the genetic structure of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Philippines (2017-2019).

Dengue is the fastest emerging arboviral disease in the world, imposing a substantial health and economic burden in the tropics and subtropics. The mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is the primary vector of dengue in the Philippines. We examined the genetic structure of Ae. aegypti populations collected from the Philippine major islands (Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao), each with highland (Baguio city, Cebu city mountains and Maramag, Bukidnon, respectively) and lowland sites (Quezon city; Liloan, Cebu and Cagayan de Oro [CDO] city, respectively) during the wet (2017-2018 and 2018-2019) and dry seasons (2

Vaccination against poliomyelitis in Brazil from 2011 to 2021: successes, setbacks, and challenges ahead.

The drop in childhood vaccination coverage (VC), including poliomyelitis, has become a health concern. The objective was to analyze the temporal trend of coverage of the three doses of the polio vaccine in the first 12 months of life between 2011 and 2021, in addition to mapping vaccination coverage in Brazil, including the COVID-19 pandemic period. An ecological study was carried out using interrupted time series (STI) techniques and spatial analysis, with data from the National Immunization Program Information System. The VC trend was adjusted by the Newey-West variance estimator according t

Estimating the population level impact of a gonococcal vaccine candidate: Predictions from a simple mathematical model.

BACKGROUND: Neisseria gonorrhoeae cross-protection was suggested in a New Zealand meningitis B vaccine. We modeled the potential impact of similar vaccines on gonorrhea prevalence in heterosexuals in the United States. METHODS: Our mathematical model incorporated infection, behavior, and vaccination dynamics. Approximate Bayesian Computation calibrated our model to US prevalence. Primary analyses assumed New Zealand vaccine characteristics: 30% efficacy and 2-year duration of protection. We estimated impact under two vaccine coverages (20%, 50%). RESULTS: Reduction in gonorrhea prevalence ra

Spatiotemporal Patterns of Anthrax, Vietnam, 1990-2015.

Anthrax is a priority zoonosis for control in Vietnam. The geographic distribution of anthrax remains to be defined, challenging our ability to target areas for control. We analyzed human anthrax cases in Vietnam to obtain anthrax incidence at the national and provincial level. Nationally, the trendline for cases remained at ≈61 cases/year throughout the 26 years of available data, indicating control efforts are not effectively reducing disease burden over time. Most anthrax cases occurred in the Northern Midlands and Mountainous regions, and the provinces of Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Lao Cai, Ha G

Progress towards the 2020 milestones of the end TB strategy in Cambodia: estimates of age and sex specific TB incidence and mortality from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

BACKGROUND: Cambodia was recently removed from the World Health Organization's (WHO's) top 30 high tuberculosis (TB) burden countries. However, Cambodia's TB burden remains substantial, and the country is on the WHO's new global TB watchlist. We aimed to examine the levels and trends in the fatal and non-fatal TB burden in Cambodia from 1990 to 2019, assessing progress towards the WHO End TB interim milestones, which aim to reduce TB incidence rate by 20% and TB deaths by 35% from 2015 to 2020. METHODS: We leveraged the Global Burden of Disease 2019 (GBD 2019) analytical framework to compute

Estimating typhoid incidence from community-based serosurveys: a multicohort study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of enteric fever, an invasive bacterial infection caused by typhoidal Salmonellae (Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi), is largely unknown in regions without blood culture surveillance. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether new diagnostic serological markers for typhoidal Salmonella can reliably estimate population-level incidence. METHODS: We collected longitudinal blood samples from patients with blood culture-confirmed enteric fever enrolled from surveillance studies in Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and Ghana between 2016 and 2021 and conducte

Machine Learning Techniques for Hypoglycemia Prediction: Trends and Challenges.

(1) Background: the use of machine learning techniques for the purpose of anticipating hypoglycemia has increased considerably in the past few years. Hypoglycemia is the drop in blood glucose below critical levels in diabetic patients. This may cause loss of cognitive ability, seizures, and in extreme cases, death. In almost half of all the severe cases, hypoglycemia arrives unannounced and is essentially asymptomatic. The inability of a diabetic patient to anticipate and intervene the occurrence of a hypoglycemic event often results in crisis. Hence, the prediction of hypoglycemia is a vital

Non-invasive neurostimulation modulates processing of spatial frequency information in rapid perception of faces.

This study used high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) to examine how low and high spatial frequency filtered faces are processed. Response times were measured in a task where healthy young adults categorised spatially filtered hybrid faces, presented at foveal and peripheral blocks, while sham and high-frequency random noise was applied to a lateral occipito-temporal location on their scalp. Both the Frequentist and Bayesian approaches show that in contrast to sham, active stimulation significantly reduced response times to peripherally presented low spatial frequency inf

Nonlinear Models to Describe the Testicular Size Growth Curve of Mangalarga Marchador Stallions.

This study aimed to describe the testicular growth curve in Mangalarga Marchador stallions fitting nonlinear models to data of total scrotal width (TSW) and testicular volume (TV). A cross-sectional study was conducted with 120 stallions, aging from 1.75 to 21.93 years. The parameters of nonlinear models (Brody, Gompertz, Hill, Logistic I and II, Meloun I and II, Michaelis-Menten, Mitscherlich, and von-Bertalanffy) were estimated by Gauss-Newton iterative process. Goodness of fit was evaluated by the corrected Akaike (AICc) and Bayesian (BIC) information criteria, adjusted R2, error sum of squ

A network psychometric approach to neurocognition in early Alzheimer's disease.

In a typical pattern of Alzheimer's disease onset, episodic memory decline is predominant while decline in other neurocognitive domains is subsidiary or absent. Such descriptions refer to relationships between neurocognitive domains as well as deficits within domains. However, the former relationships are rarely statistically modelled. This study used psychometric network analysis to model relationships between neurocognitive variables in cognitive normality (CN), amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), and early Alzheimer's disease (eAD). Gaussian graphical models with extended Bayesian in

Molecular characterization of depression trait and state.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a brain disorder often characterized by recurrent episode and remission phases. The molecular correlates of MDD have been investigated in case-control comparisons, but the biological alterations associated with illness trait (regardless of clinical phase) or current state (symptomatic and remitted phases) remain largely unknown, limiting targeted drug discovery. To characterize MDD trait- and state-dependent changes, in single or recurrent depressive episode or remission, we generated transcriptomic profiles of subgenual anterior cingulate cortex of postmorte

Systems Biology of the Vasopressin V2 Receptor: New Tools for Discovery of Molecular Actions of a GPCR.

Systems biology can be defined as the study of a biological process in which all of the relevant components are investigated together in parallel to discover the mechanism. Although the approach is not new, it has come to the forefront as a result of genome sequencing projects completed in the first few years of the current century. It has elements of large-scale data acquisition (chiefly next-generation sequencing-based methods and protein mass spectrometry) and large-scale data analysis (big data integration and Bayesian modeling). Here we discuss these methodologies and show how they can be

Tensor learning of pointwise mutual information from EHR data for early prediction of sepsis.

Early detection of sepsis can facilitate early clinical intervention with effective treatment and may reduce sepsis mortality rates. In view of this, machine learning-based automated diagnosis of sepsis using easily recordable physiological data can be more promising as compared to the gold standard rule-based clinical criteria in current practice. This study aims to develop such a machine learning framework that demonstrates the quantification of heterogeneity within the tabular electronic health records (EHR) data of clinical covariates to capture both linear relationships and nonlinear corr

Systems Biology Model of Cerebral Oxygen Delivery and Metabolism During Therapeutic Hypothermia: Application to the Piglet Model.

Hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a significant cause of death and disability. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is the only available standard of treatment, but 45-55% of cases still result in death or neurodevelopmental disability following TH. This work has focussed on developing a new brain tissue physiology and biochemistry systems biology model that includes temperature effects, as well as a Bayesian framework for analysis of model parameter estimation. Through this, we can simulate the effects of temperature on brain tissue oxygen delivery and metabolism, as well as analyse clinical

Different drugs come with different motives: Examining motives for substance use among people who engage in polysubstance use undergoing methadone maintenance therapy (MMT).

BACKGROUND: Substance use motives (i.e., reasons for using a substance) are thought to be the most proximal variable leading to substance use. These motives have been described by various typologies, the most well known being the four-factor drinking motives model which separates motives into enhancement, social, coping, and conformity (Cooper, 1994). Although extensively studied in adult community samples, motives for use have less commonly been investigated among populations at a later stage of addiction, where polysubstance use is more common. Moreover, because the motives literature has la

Maternal asthma is associated with reduced lung function in male infants in a combined analysis of the BLT and BILD cohorts.

RATIONALE: Asthma in pregnancy is associated with respiratory diseases in the offspring. OBJECTIVE: To investigate if maternal asthma is associated with lung function in early life. METHODS: Data on lung function measured at 5-6 weeks of age were combined from two large birth cohorts: the Bern Infant Lung Development (BILD) and the Australian Breathing for Life Trial (BLT) birth cohorts conducted at three study sites (Bern, Switzerland; Newcastle and Sydney, Australia). The main outcome variable was time to reach peak tidal expiratory flow as a percentage of total expiratory time(tPTEF:tE%).

Using geospatial models to map zero-dose children: factors associated with zero-dose vaccination status before and after a mass measles and rubella vaccination campaign in Southern province, Zambia.

INTRODUCTION: Despite gains in global coverage of childhood vaccines, many children remain undervaccinated. Although mass vaccination campaigns are commonly conducted to reach these children their effectiveness is unclear. We evaluated the effectiveness of a mass vaccination campaign in reaching zero-dose children. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study in 10 health centre catchment areas in Southern province, Zambia in November 2020. About 2 months before a national mass measles and rubella vaccination campaign conducted by the Ministry of Health, we used aerial satellite maps to identify
