Piezoelectric PDMS/AlN Film for Osteogenesis in Vitro.

Bone defect and nonunion are complex diseases which are difficult to treat due to insufficient bone regeneration. Electrical stimulation has attracted attention as a promising strategy to induce and enhance bone regeneration. Self-powered and biocompatible materials have been widely explored and used in biomedical devices, owing to their ability to produce electrical stimulation without an external power source. We aimed to prepare a piezoelectric polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/aluminum nitride (AlN) film with excellent biocompatibility and osteoconductive ability for the growth of murine calvari…

Histological evaluation of bone response to pediatric endodontic pastes: an experimental study in guinea pig.

This study aimed to evaluate by the intra-osseous implant technique the most commonly used materials for pulp therapy in pediatric dentistry: calcium hydroxide (CH), Guedes Pinto paste and CTZ paste, according to FDI (1980) and ANSI/ADA (1982) recommendations. Thirty guinea pigs, 10 for each material, divided into experimental periods of 4 and 12 weeks received one implant on each side of the lower jaw symphysis. The external lateral tube wall served as control for the technique. At the end of the observation periods, the animals were euthanized and specimens were prepared for routine histolog

Thermodynamic characterization of selected biomaterial surfaces: Comparison of surface free energy approaches.

The thermodynamic surface properties of biomaterials play a key role in governing interfacial interactions and are commonly characterized by surface free energy (SFE) and its components derived from wetting data. However, different theoretical approaches used for SFE determination may yield substantially different results, particularly for polar and high-energy surfaces. In this study, the total surface free energy and its components were systematically analyzed for a range of clinically relevant biomaterial surfaces, including titanium, gold, cobalt-chromium alloy, nano-hydroxyapatite, and am

Covalent crosslinking of mucins: From biomaterial design to tailored functions.

Mucins are high-molecular-weight glycoproteins essential for the hydration, lubrication, and protective barrier functions of epithelial surfaces. Beyond these physical properties, their dense O-glycan brushes serve as potent multivalent ligands that regulate immune communication through interactions with sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectins (Siglecs) and other glycan-binding receptors. The translation of native mucins into functional biomaterials is often hindered by the mechanical instability of noncovalent assemblies, and investigations of mucin biology can require well-defined mo

Sericin-based biomaterial for craniomaxillofacial regeneration: Preclinical evidence and translational potential.

Significant craniomaxillofacial (CMF) bone defects after trauma, tumor removal, or congenital disabilities are a major clinical challenge. Therefore, new methods are continually sought to improve treatment effectiveness. In this context, next-generation biomaterials deserve special attention. Sericin, a protein component of silk, demonstrates regenerative potential. Current evidence suggests that sericin actively stimulates osteogenesis by promoting the differentiation of osteoprogenitor cells and upregulating key markers, including Runx2, osteocalcin, and osteopontin. In addition, it exhibits

Biomaterial-Focused Strategies Targeting Dendritic Cells for Autoimmune Disease Treatment.

Autoimmune diseases encompass over 100 distinct diseases where the immune cells betray our body by attacking the tissues they are meant to protect. Even though rare, 15 million Americans are collectively affected by autoimmune diseases, a number that continues to rise every year. Current treatment modalities primarily focus on alleviating symptoms rather than providing prevention or a cure. Tolerogenic dendritic cells (tolDCs) have gained popularity for autoimmune disease treatment as an alternative to traditional systemic immunosuppressive therapies due to their ability to restore immune home

Biocompatible Nanoparticles Encapsulation of Fluorenyl-Porphyrins: Impact of Arm Structural Modifications on Two-Photon Phototherapeutic Performance.

In this work, we explore the use of porphyrin/fluorene assemblies as luminescent photosensitizers (PSs) for two-photon photodynamic therapy in biological media. In this context, we systematically investigated a series of star-shaped hydrophobic porphyrins bearing four arms composed of either a single fluorenyl unit or two fluorenyls linked by triple or double bonds. These fluorenyl-porphyrins, previously identified as efficient fluorescent two-photon PSs in organic solvents, were encapsulated at various loadings in poly(benzyl malate)-based polymeric nanoparticles (NPs). Notably, promising PDT

Reciprocal Coupling among Extracellular Matrix Mechanics, Mechanosensitive Ion Channels, and Cell Remodeling Behaviors.

Cells actively remodel the extracellular matrix (ECM) through a repertoire of mechanically driven behaviors, including traction force generation, migration, proteolysis, and long-term deposition. While these processes are often discussed separately, emerging evidence suggests that they are coordinated through shared mechanochemical signaling modules. In parallel, advances in hydrogel-based biomaterials have revealed that ECM mechanics, including stiffness, viscoelastic dissipation, degradability, and temporal dynamics, can systematically program cellular remodeling behaviors. In this review, w

Methanol Clipping Modification on Liquid Metal Surface Enhances Photothermal Performance and Biocompatibility.

Photothermal conversion (PTC) enables materials to convert light energy, particularly in the near-infrared region, into heat. Photothermal materials have been widely applied in energy harvesting, sensing, and cancer therapy, while photothermal therapy (PTT) has emerged as a noninvasive tumor treatment with high targeting capability and low toxicity. Liquid metals (LMs) are promising photothermal agents due to their low toxicity, degradability, and tunable photothermal properties. However, their high reflectivity and poor stability significantly hinder practical applications. Herein, the three-

Bamboo-Like Whiskers-Reinforced Bioceramics Accelerate Large Segmental Bone Regeneration via Dual Modulation of Type-H Vessels and Osteoinduction.

Regenerative repair of segmental bone defect remains a major clinical challenge. The conventional mental implants suffer from mechanical strength mismatch and long-term foreign bodies presence. While, the osteoinductive materials lack insufficient mechanical strength for the repair of load-bearing bone. Inspired by bamboo, whisker-reinforced Ca-P ceramics (HW) have been developed to accelerate segmental bone regeneration. Bamboo-like whiskers can reduce the stress concentration and impede crack propagation via whisker broken, whisker bridging, and crack deflection, achieving 3 times increase i

Biomaterials for women's health: Recent progress in nanomaterials and innovative therapies for endometriosis treatment.

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterine cavity. Despite significant advances in understanding its pathophysiology, the clinical management of endometriosis remains a profound challenge. The disease is a leading cause of pelvic pain and infertility, significantly impairing the quality of life of affected individuals. Although endometriosis is histologically benign, its progressive, invasive nature and high recurrence rate pose serious morbidity risks, necessitating long-term therapeutic intervention. Current

Molecular memory of cell fate: A missing dimension of neural implant biocompatibility.

Neural implants are limited by the foreign body response, a protective but often unresolved reaction culminating in reactive gliosis and signal instability. We propose that long-term implant instability arises from progressive erosion of lineage-defining regulatory programs, uncoupling cellular compensation from tissue needs.

Oxygen-releasing biomaterials for bone tissue regeneration.

Bone defects often exceed the body's innate self-healing capacity, inevitably disrupting local vascular networks and establishing a severe hypoxic microenvironment. This pathological hypoxia compromises cell survival, suppresses osteogenic differentiation, and ultimately dictates regenerative failure, representing a critical bottleneck in bone tissue engineering. Oxygen-releasing biomaterials (ORBs) have emerged as a transformative strategy to reprogram this hostile microenvironment into an oxygenous and pro-osteogenic niche. To advance this rapidly evolving field, this review provides a compr

Bridging interfacial barriers: Integrated design of adhesives for intervertebral disc repair.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a leading cause of chronic low back pain, yet current clinical interventions and biomaterials-based therapies remain largely palliative and fail to address the underlying structural deterioration of the degenerated intervertebral disc (IVD). A critical design criterion has been consistently overlooked: robust interfacial adhesion. Within the mechanically demanding and biochemically harsh environment of the degenerated IVD, therapeutic materials lacking stable tissue adhesion are highly susceptible to delamination, migration, and extrusion, ultimately
