Neurotransmitter and neuropeptide regulation of mast cell function: a systematic review.

The existence of the neural control of mast cell functions has long been proposed. Mast cells (MCs) are localized in association with the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and the brain, where they are closely aligned, anatomically and functionally, with neurons and neuronal processes throughout the body. They express receptors for and are regulated by various neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, and other neuromodulators. Consequently, modulation provided by these neurotransmitters and neuromodulators allows neural control of MC functions and involvement in the pathogenesis of mast cell-related di

Clinicopathologic Spectrum of Renal Lesions Following Anti-TNF- α Inhibitor Therapy: A Single Center Experience.

KEY POINTS: This renal biopsy study documents clinical renal dysfunction and pathologic lesions encountered in patients after anti-TNFα therapy and compares them with similar patients without treatment. This study highlights the spectrum of autoimmune, serologic, and other kidney adverse effects of anti-TNFα therapy. Unrelated active or chronic renal lesions including amyloidosis secondary to the underlying systemic inflammatory states may be observed. BACKGROUND: Anti-TNFα inhibitors, as biological agents, are used in autoimmune inflammatory states, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthr

The role of radiation oncology in small cell lung cancer.

Small cell lung cancer comprises a histologic subgroup of bronchogenic carcinomas distinguished particularly by a responsiveness to cytotoxic agents, and equally by a strong tendency to disseminate, both to mediastinal and distant sites. At one time considered suitable only for short-term palliation by radiation therapy, this disease is now managed by both systemic and regional approaches, typically with close integration of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Thoracic irradiation produces modest improvements in both survival and local control in small cell lung cancer, when the clinical extent is

Avoidant coping in panic disorder: a yohimbine biological challenge study.

Few studies have addressed whether the use of avoidance-oriented coping strategies is related to the development of panic in patients with panic disorder(PD). Self-report, clinician-rated, and physiological data were collected from 42 individuals who participated in a yohimbine biological challenge study, performed under double-blind, placebo-controlled conditions. Participants included 20 healthy controls and 22 currently symptomatic patients who met DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for PD. Consistent with prediction, patients with PD who had higher perceived efficacy of avoidance-oriented strat

Biological Therapy Leads to a Reduction in Systemic Inflammation but Leaves Serum Uric Acid Unmodified in Moderate-to-Severe Plaque Psoriasis: A Prospective Longitudinal Cohort Study.

Background/Objective: Psoriasis is a systemic inflammatory disease often associated with metabolic comorbidities, including hyperuricemia. While biological therapies effectively target inflammatory pathways, their specific impact on serum uric acid (SUA) levels remains debated. This study aimed to evaluate whether biological therapy, while reducing systemic inflammation, influences SUA levels in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. Methods: A prospective longitudinal cohort study was conducted involving 30 patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. Patients received biolo

Cardiometabolic Associations of Dermatological Treatments. Part II: Targeted and Biologic Therapies.

Targeted and biologic therapies are increasingly being used for treatment of dermatological conditions. Certain agents are associated with cardiometabolic toxicities, including major adverse cardiovascular events and altered lipid profiles, necessitating baseline and on-treatment monitoring. Close cardiometabolic monitoring is needed throughout treatment with co-management by cardiology, endocrinology, rheumatology, oncology, and primary care for symptomatic or high-risk patients. Conversely, some therapies may reduce systemic inflammation and atherogenic factors, possibly conferring reduced r

Low dose IL-2 in patients with steroid-dependent dysimmune manifestations associated with myelodysplastic syndromes: a three-case report.

OBJECTIVES: Systemic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases can be associated with myelodysplastic syndromes. Current treatments (steroids, immunosuppressive agents, biologics) are unsatisfactory because of their low response rate, dependence or adverse events. We aimed at evaluating the effects of low doses of IL-2 (ld-IL2) as a regulatory T-cell inducer in this context. METHODS: We treated three patients with ld-IL2 with myelodysplastic syndromes and an associated dysimmune disorder (polymyalgia rheumatic, relapsing polychondritis associated with Sweet's syndrome and vasculitis with cutaneous

Pneumocystis jirovecii infection: an emerging threat to patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Accompanying the increased use of biologic and non-biologic antirheumatic agents, patients with RA have been exposed to an increased risk of Pneumocystis jirovecii infection, which causes acute fulminant P. jirovecii pneumonia (PCP). Mortality in this population is higher than in HIV-infected individuals. Several guidelines and recommendations for HIV-infected individuals are available; however, such guidelines for RA patients remain less clear. Between 2006 and 2008 we encountered a clustering event of P. jirovecii infection among RA outpatients. Through our experience with this outbreak and

Biological therapies: new treatment options for ANCA-associated vasculitis?

Biological therapies enable us to apply highly selective targeting components to modulate the immune response. Until now, a few controlled studies investigated the efficacy of TNF-alpha blocking agents in systemic vasculitis have been carried out, but, in general, they were falling short of expectations. However, there is conducive evidence that TNF-alpha blockers are advantageous in antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, at least in selected disease stages. Likewise, although the efficacy of the monoclonal CD20 antibody rituximab in ANCA-associated vasculitis is o

Kaposi's sarcoma in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Kaposi's sarcoma is the most common malignancy seen in association with AIDS. Although the pathogenesis of AIDS-KS has not been clearly established, the clinical course and prognosis are closely related to the patient's immune status, prior history of opportunistic infection, and hematologic status. Treatment methods include local or regional radiation therapy, cytotoxic chemotherapy, and interferon therapy. Evaluation of the results of clinical therapeutic studies in this tumor should consider its natural history and peculiar biologic behavior and associated complications of AIDS. Effective t

Successful Treatment of Ixekizumab-Induced Paradoxical Eczematous Reaction with JAK Inhibitors: A Case Report.

With the widespread long-term use of biologics in plaque psoriasis, reports of paradoxical eczema caused by interleukin-17A (IL-17A) monoclonal antibodies are increasing. This paradoxical eczema (PE) can occasionally require termination of biologic treatment, which may result in suboptimal management of psoriasis and increased risk of disease flare-ups. In the context of PE, therapeutic strategies should prioritize agents with dual efficacy against both the primary inflammatory process and paradoxical dermatitis, such as Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, which modulate key cytokine pathways impli

Biological characteristics, biosafety prevention and control strategies for the 2022 multi-country outbreak of monkeypox.

Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), which is a potential biological warfare agent of bioterrorism and poses the greatest threat to the world's public biosafety and health after variola virus (VARV). While the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has not ended yet, monkeypox is spreading menacingly. The first case of monkeypox in a nonendemic country was confirmed on May 6th, 2022, while the first imported case from Asia was found on June 21st. There were more than 16 thousand reported cases as of July 23rd, the day the World Health Organization (WHO) d

Review article: Barrett's oesophagus--cancer risk, biology and therapeutic management.

Barrett's oesophagus is receiving increasing scrutiny as the rates of adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus rise. Because clinical features are not predictive of the presence of Barrett's oesophagus and most individuals with Barrett's oesophagus go undetected, a case can be made for surveillance endoscopy in patients with chronic reflux. Once Barrett's oesophagus is diagnosed patients should be entered into a surveillance programme despite lack of proof of efficacy. Scientific study of putative biological markers of increased risk has added dramatically to the understanding of the biology of the le

Multifaceted Impacts of Plant-Beneficial Pseudomonas spp. in Managing Various Plant Diseases and Crop Yield Improvement.

The modern agricultural system has issues with the reduction of agricultural productivity due to a wide range of abiotic and biotic stresses. It is also expected that in the future the entire world population may rapidly increase and will surely demand more food. Farmers now utilize a massive quantity of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides for disease management and to increase food production. These synthetic fertilizers badly affect the environment, the texture of the soil, plant productivity, and human health. However, agricultural safety and sustainability depend on an ecofriendly and ine
