Adult erotosexual status and fetal hormonal masculinization and demasculinization: 46,XX congenital virilizing adrenal hyperplasia and 46,XY androgen-insensitivity syndrome compared.

Among 30 young women with a history of the treated adrenogenital syndrome (CVAH), 11 (37%) rated themselves as bisexual or homosexual. Among a control group consisting of 15 women with the 46,XY androgen-insensitivity syndrome (AIS) plus 12 with the Rokitansky syndrome (MRKS), the corresponding figure was 2 (7%), both bisexual. Chi-square was significant beyond the 0.01 level. In Kinsey's 1953 sample 15% of women experienced homoerotic arousal imagery by age 20, and 10% had had homoerotic partner contact. The most likely hypothesis to explain the CVAH findings is that of a prenatal and/or neon

Parental influences on tobacco use and likelihood of future use among sexual minority young adult men and women in the United States.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Limited research has examined mechanisms, including parenting behaviors, contributing to tobacco use disparities among sexual minority young adults (SMYAs). METHODS: Participants were 644 young adult (ages 18-29; 36.5% racial/ethnic minority) women (N = 416; 44.7% bisexual, 7.2% lesbian, 48.1% heterosexual) and men (N = 288; 11.0% bisexual, 13.2% gay, 75.9% heterosexual). Bivariate analyses examined differences among sex-by-sexual identity subgroups in perceived parenting (psychological control, behavioral control, knowledge, autonomy support, warmth, communication)

Variations in Substance Use and Disorders Among Sexual Minorities by Race/Ethnicity.

Little is known about racial/ethnic minority substance use and disorder-related disparities among sexual minorities as compared to their heterosexual counterparts. This study aimed to understand the associations between sexual minority status and substance use and disorders among U.S. adults stratified by race/ethnicity. Methods: We analyzed data from a sample of U.S. adults (n = 35,981) surveyed during the 2012-2013 National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III. Respondents were categorized into four sexual minority statuses: heterosexual, gay/lesbian, bisexual, and co

Sexual and mental health disparities among young sexual minority women compared to exclusively heterosexual women: a national study.

INTRODUCTION: Young sexual minority women (YSMW)'s sexual health is often overlooked in research, with most studies focusing on men who have sex with men or transgender women. METHODS: This study compares the sexual and mental health of young lesbians and bisexual women with exclusively heterosexual women using data from a 2017 Swiss study on young adults' sexual health and behaviors. The sample includes 2,316 sexually active cisgender women. Bivariate analyses were conducted, followed by a multinomial regression using exclusively heterosexual women as the reference group. RESULTS: Sexual or

Men's beliefs about HPV-related disease.

While human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is associated with genital warts, anal cancer, and oral cancer, limited research has examined what men think causes these diseases. We sought to examine knowledge and beliefs about HPV-related disease among gay and bisexual men, who are at high risk for HPV infection and HPV-related cancers, and compare them to heterosexual men. We conducted an online survey in January 2009 with a national sample of men aged 18-59 who self-identified as either gay or bisexual (n = 312) or heterosexual (n = 296). The response rate was 70%. Fewer than half of men knew t

Non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis does not expand or differentiate candidates for pre-exposure prophylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) has been proposed as a strategic entry point for identifying candidates for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). However, evidence of its ability to engage at-risk populations beyond gay and bisexual men who have sex with men remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, real-world analysis of all individuals who accessed nPEP at a tertiary care centre in Italy between 2018 and 2025. Demographic and behavioural characteristics were evaluated to identify factors associated with PrEP initiation after nPEP. RESULTS: Among t

The effect of men who have sex with men (MSM) on the spread of sexually transmitted infections.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have remained a worldwide public health threat. It is difficult to control the spread of STIs, not only because of heterogeneous sexual transmission between men and women but also because of the complicated effects of sexual transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM) and mother-to-child transmission. Many studies point to the existence of a 'bisexual bridge', where STIs spread from the MSM network via bisexual connections. However, it is unclear how the MSM network affects heterosexual networks as well as mother-to-child transmission. To analyse t

Is Being Queer Gay? Sexual Attraction Patterns, Minority Stressors, and Psychological Distress in Non-Traditional Categories of Sexual Orientation.

This study examined characteristics of cisgender people who use non-traditional sexual orientation labels and investigated minority stress in these groups. Pansexual (n = 160), queer (n = 80), and asexual (n = 98) participants were compared with heterosexual (n = 1,021), bisexual (n = 1,518), and lesbian/gay (n = 2,730) individuals recruited from a cross-sectional survey. Participants were compared on sexual attraction, age, gender and childhood gender nonconformity. Hierarchical regression models with psychological distress as the dependent variable and outness, prejudice events, expectations

Violence Victimization, Substance Use, and Suicide Risk Among Sexual Minority High School Students - United States, 2015-2017.

Youths identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or another nonheterosexual identity (sexual minority youths) report more violence victimization, substance use, and suicide risk than do heterosexual youths (1). These disparities are generally attributed to minority stress (the process through which stigma directed toward sexual minorities influences health outcomes) (2,3). Sexual minority youths might experience negative outcomes associated with minority stress differently across sexual identities, but to date, no nationally representative study has examined differences in victimization, substanc

Promoting the sexual health of MSM in the context of comorbid mental health problems.

Despite the moderate efficacy of HIV prevention interventions for at risk gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM), MSM continue to represent the largest group of new HIV infections and the largest number of individuals living with HIV in the US. Environmental factors such as sexual minority stress increase the vulnerability of MSM for mental health problems. These mental health problems can be a barrier to consistently engaging in self-care health behaviors such as sexual risk reduction. We consider the following observations critical to identifying priorities for HIV preventi

A population-based study of sexual orientation identity and gender differences in adult health.

OBJECTIVES: We provide estimates of several leading US adult health indicators by sexual orientation identity and gender to fill gaps in the current literature. METHODS: We aggregated data from the 2001-2008 Massachusetts Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance surveys (N = 67,359) to examine patterns in self-reported health by sexual orientation identity and gender, using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: Compared with heterosexuals, sexual minorities (i.e., gays/lesbians, 2% of sample; bisexuals, 1%) were more likely to report activity limitation, tension or worry, smoking, drug use,

On the LH response to oestrogen and LH-RH in transsexual men.

In male rats, androgen deficiency during a critical period of sexual brain differentiation was shown to give rise to a predominantly female-differentiated brain. Such animals displayed "homosexual behaviour", i.e., they were sexually attracted preferentially to partners of the same sex. In addition, they exhibited a sex-specific evocability of a positive oestrogen feedback effect. A positive oestrogen feedback effect on LH secretion was also induced in homosexual transsexual men, in contrast to hetero- or bisexual transsexual men. Thus in homosexual transsexual men, an intravenous injection of

Pre-exposure Prophylaxis in LGBT Communities.

Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender individuals face the highest burden of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective evidence-based biomedical intervention to reduce acquisition of HIV infection but uptake has been suboptimal in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations. Primary care providers play an integral role in addressing HIV disparities by educating patients and facilitating access to PrEP. After PrEP initiation, primary care providers should assess for and manage adverse effect

An object-oriented analysis of social apps, syringes and ARTs within gay Taiwanese men's chemsex practices.

Critical drug studies explore the discursive and material dimensions of sexualised drug use to overcome individualised and often pathologising notions such as risk, safety, responsibility and pleasure. This article uses an object-oriented approach-following the use and flow of social apps, syringes and antiretroviral therapy (ART)-to analyse gay and bisexual Taiwanese men's drug practices. Interview data from fourteen men are used to articulate how objects were brought into gay and bisexual men's chemsex repertoire in ways that shaped individuals' safe-sex communication, intimacy maintenance a

HIV Testing and Risks of Sexual Behavior among HIV-Negative Men Who Have Sex with Men in Ningbo, China.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing is confirmed as a preventive strategy for HIV control. However, the testing rate and risk behaviors of HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM) remain unclear. We aimed to examine factors associated with HIV testing and high-risk behaviors among HIV-negative MSM. From July 2016 to June 2017, participants were recruited by snowball sampling from WeChat groups, bars, and other venues. HIV testing was performed to exclude HIV-positive MSM. Face-to-face questionnaires regarding HIV testing and high-risk behaviors were conducted; 988 MSM were included,
