Unilateral cerebellar and brain stem hypoplasia in a child with a postnatal diagnosis of dissecting aneurysm in basilar artery.

Cerebellum is highly vulnerable in the prenatal period. Increasing experience with fetal imaging studies has demonstrated that unilateral cerebellar hypoplasia (UCH) is mainly prenatally acquired, representing disruption rather than a true malformation. Here, we report the case of a 17-month-old boy presented with a sudden onset of abnormal eye movements, who was diagnosed during routine fetal screening with UCH and brain stem hypoplasia and suffered from cerebral palsy; however, no posterior arterial system pathology was detected on cranial magnetic resonance images at that time. Following th…

Neural stem cells in the immature, but not the mature, subventricular zone respond robustly to traumatic brain injury.

Pediatric traumatic brain injury is a significant problem that affects many children each year. Progress is being made in developing neuroprotective strategies to combat these injuries. However, investigators are a long way from therapies to fully preserve injured neurons and glia. To restore neurological function, regenerative strategies will be required. Given the importance of stem cells in repairing damaged tissues and the known persistence of neural precursors in the subventricular zone (SVZ), we evaluated regenerative responses of the SVZ to a focal brain lesion. As tissues repair more s

A prospective evaluation of changes in brain structure and cognitive functions in adult stem cell transplant recipients.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an efficacious treatment for many hematologic malignancies. However, the conditioning regimen of high-dose (HD) chemotherapy with or without total body irradiation (TBI) can be associated with neurotoxicity. In this prospective study, we used quantitative neuroimaging techniques to examine regional gray matter and ventricular volumes, and standardized neuropsychological tests to assess cognitive function before and 1 year after HSCT in 28 patients with hematologic malignancies and in ten healthy controls evaluated at similar intervals. Nineteen

Intracerebroventricular transplanted bone marrow stem cells survive and migrate into the brain of rats with Parkinson's disease.

In this study, 6-hydroxydopamine was stereotaxically injected into the right substantia nigra compact and ventral tegmental area of rats to establish Parkinson's disease models. The rats then received a transplantation of bone marrow stromal cells that were previously isolated, cultured and labeled with 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine in vitro. Transplantation of the bone marrow stromal cells significantly decreased apomorphine-induced rotation time and the escape latency in the Morris water maze test as compared with rats with untreated Parkinson's disease. Immunohistochemical staining showed that, 5

[Clinical and genetic analysis of a family with leukoencephalopathy with brain stem and spinal cord involvement and lactate elevation].

OBJECTIVE: Leukoencephalopathy with brain stem and spinal cord involvement and lactate elevation (LBSL) is a rare autosomal recessive disease. Affected individuals are invariably compound heterozygous for two mutations in DARS2. No reports of LBSL patients have been published in the mainland of China. The aim of this study was to explore the clinical and genetic features of a family with LBSL, which may contribute to definite diagnosis, genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis of this rare disease in China. METHODS: Clinical data of the proband and other family members as well as DNA samples…

To be or not to be accepted: the role of immunogenicity of neural stem cells following transplantation into the brain in animal and human studies.

Grafting of neural stem cells into the mammalian central nervous system (CNS) has been performed for some decades now, both in basic research and clinical applications for neurological disorders such as Parkinson's and Huntington's disease, stroke, and spinal cord injuries. Albeit the "proof of principle" status that neural grafts can reinstate functional deficits and rebuild damaged neuronal circuitries, many critical scientific questions are still open. Among them are the manifold immunological aspects that are encountered during the graft-host interaction in vivo. For example, the experienc

Comparison of the behavior of neural stem cells in the brain of normal and twitcher mice after neonatal transplantation.

The twitcher mouse is a model of human Krabbe's disease caused by a mutation in the galacto-cerebrosidase gene. As a result of deficient catabolism of myelin, death of oligodendrocytes and demyelination occur widely in the central and peripheral nervous system, making it an ideal model for investigation of myelin repair strategies. Here we describe the use of mouse neural stem cells (NSCs) expressing enhanced green fluorescence protein (eGFP) for transplantation in neonatal normal and twitcher mice. Normal and twitcher mice in all age groups (20, 30, and 45 days old) showed engraftment and dif

Activation of brain stem neurons by irritant chemical stimulation of the throat assessed by c-fos immunohistochemistry.

The method of c-fos immunohistochemistry was used to identify the brain stem distribution of neurons activated following irritant chemical stimulation of the laryngopharyngeal mucosa. In pentobarbital-anesthetized rats, either water (control), nicotine (600 mM, 1 ml) or capsaicin (330 microM, 1 ml) was applied to the pharynx via a cannula placed posterior to the soft palate. Following nicotine and capsaicin, there was a significant increase in fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) compared with controls in the following areas: nucleus of the solitary tract from the level of the pyramidal decussation…

[Clinical presentation and prognosis of brain stem infarcts. An evaluation of the Stroke Databank of the German Stroke Foundation].

Due to the great variety of clinical classification systems and syndromes, a representative overview of the etiology and prognosis of brain stem infarctions is missing. From the German Stroke Data Bank we therefore investigated 455 patients with visible brainstem infarction on cerebral imaging in comparison to patients with other infarct localizations. Follow-up after 3 and 12 months assessed functional outcome and recurrence of cerebral ischemia. Of 455 patients with acute brainstem infarction, 115 had additional infarctions in other vascular territories. In the remaining 340 patients with is…

Responses of trigeminal brain stem neurons and the digastric muscle to tooth-pulp stimulation in awake cats.

1. Cats were prepared for chronic recording from neurons in pars oralis and pars interpolaris of the trigeminal spinal nucleus. Electrodes were implanted into canine teeth for electrical stimulation and the digastric muscle for recording electromyograms. 2. Recordings were made from the animals when they were awake and unrestrained as well as when they were lightly anesthetized. Some neurons were studied under both conditions. 3. In an awake animal, single tooth-pulp stimuli of 0.1 ms duration and < or = 1 mA intensity produced no aversive behavior. 4. The response of trigeminal brain stem neu…

[Lateralization of secondary lesions of the brain stem in stroke by the method of short-latency auditory evoked potentials].

Twenty-seven patients with acute cerebral circulation disorders (ACCD) in large hemispheres and 4 patients with ACCD in the cerebellum were examined by means of short-latent acoustic evoked potentials (SAEP). The signs of the secondary stem syndrome were recorded in the neurological status of all the patients. Computer-aided tomography discovered displacement of the median structures of varying degree and deformation of cisternal spaces of the stem. The data obtained allowed a conclusion about a possibility of lateralization of the side of a greater injury to the stem by means of SAEP. As a ru

Decompression of the brain stem and superior cervical spine for congenital/acquired craniovertebral invagination: an interdisciplinary approach.

A transoropharyngeal/transpalatal approach to the clivus and anterior cervical spine in association with a midline labiomandibular glossotomy has proved successful in the treatment of craniovertebral instability. Nine cases at this institution between 1978 and 1986 were retrospectively reviewed. A head-and-neck surgeon, along with a neurosurgeon and/or orthopedic surgeon collaborated on these procedures. The indications, methods, operative techniques, results and postoperative complications are presented.

A comparison of auditory brain stem response and behavioral screening in high risk and normal newborn infants.

A total of 345 newborn infants received a behavioral screening consistent with protocol adopted by the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing. Infants were divided into three groups consisting of 108 at-risk for hearing loss, 80 intensive care nursery graduates, and 157 normal control infants. Of the total, 315 newborns received auditory brain stem response (ABR) assessment. The results suggest that 4% of the high risk population had irreversible hearing loss to such a degree that amplification was warranted. Discussion focuses on the questionable use of behavioral screening in the newborn nursery …

[Brain stem auditory evoked potentials in tumors of the posterior parts of the 3d ventricle and pineal gland].

Dynamic studies (one to six times) of stem generated potentials (SGP) to acoustic stimulation were conducted in 32 patients with tumors of the posterior parts of the third ventricle and the pineal gland. In tumors of this localization, the SGP underwent pathological changes in 90% of cases: the response latency increased, its amplitude reduced more or less coarsely (even to complete abaissement of the peaks), and the time intervals between the peaks increased. Dynamic studies of SGP to acoustic stimulation may help the surgeon in making the diagnosis and prove valuable in appraising the functi

[Brain stem audiometry and metrizamide-meatocisternography in diagnosis of small neurinomas of the acoustic nerve (author's transl)].

Reviewing the newest literature, an acoustic neuroma can be detected in 96% of the cases, employing brainstem audiometry. The present study aims to answer the question how good small acoustic neuromas can be detected using this method. Fifty patients with an asymmetric hearing loss, with unilateral caloric deficit and short lasting periods of dizziness when changing position were investigated. Brainstem audiometry as well as metrizamide-meatocisternography were carried out. Thus we were able to detect seven small acoustic neuromas; only one tumor could not be detected with the brainstem audiom

Surgical treatment of arteriovenous angiomas localised in the corpus callosum, basal ganglia and near the brain stem.

Seven cases of deep angiomas, in regions near the midline, were operated on in the National Institute of Neurosurgery, Budapest. In four cases the malformation was not so circumscribed that it could be localized in one structure alone. On two occasions it involved the corpus callosum and the neighbouring hemispheral substance; in one instance it involved the head of the caudate nucleus and the lateral ventricle also. Two intraventricular angiomas, supplied by the choroidal arteries, involved the corpus striatum and the thalamus. Three cases of juxtapeduncular angiomas are described in this ser

[Cyclothymia and the brain stem. The question of symptomatic cyclothymia on the basis of observations in insufficiency of the basilar arterial system].

Seven patients with an insufficiency in the basilar arterial system showed a typical endogenous depression. We assumed that the temporal coincidence of neurological and psychial syndromes was not accidental but both were caused by a circulation disturbance in the cerebral stem structures.
