OBJECTIVE: Despite the ubiquity of intra-articular and bursal injections for the treatment of joint pain and bursitis, relatively little literature is available on the prevalence of infection after these procedures. The aim of this study was to identify the number of infections recalled by sports medicine physicians who perform injections of large joints and bursae at least once per month.
DESIGN: A survey of physician members of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine identified the reported number of recalled infections for each large joint/bursal location.
RESULTS: Of a total of …

Frozen shoulder is a common disorder characterized by pain and limitation of the glenohumeral joint motions. While it is usually clinically diagnosed, as it can also mimic several other painful shoulder pathologies, imaging techniques can contribute to the differential diagnosis. In the literature, static and dynamic ultrasonographic findings have been reported to better characterize this condition and plan for treatment. We studied a 50-year-old male patient with capsular stiffness of the shoulder on whom Ultrasound (US) examination was performed. Our study exemplifies another interesting ult

Complications are agonizing and leave feelings of inadequacy, insufficiency, or ineptitude. For these and other reasons, complications are not frequently reported in the literature. But reporting of complications is not only cathartic, it can be illuminating. Once out in the daylight, complications can be categorized, quantified, parsed, analyzed, and dissected with the scientific method to yield insight to enable us to prevent complications that we can avoid. Technical innovations have demonstrated ability to solve current problems. Standardizing the reporting of complications allows comparab

BACKGROUND: In 1940s, it was proposed that frozen shoulder progresses through a self-limiting natural history of painful, stiff and recovery phases, leading to full recovery without treatment. However, clinical evidence of persistent limitations lasting for years contradicts this assumption.
OBJECTIVES: To assess evidence for the natural history theory of frozen shoulder by examining: (1) progression through recovery phases, and (2) full resolution without treatment.
DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, PubMed, EBSCO CINAHL and PEDro database searches augmented by hand searching.

This is a case of glenohumeral chondrolysis, following arthroscopy for adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder, during which, capsular release has been performed using a bipolar radio frequency energy probe. Heat produced during the procedure by the radio frequency energy probe, probably was the reason behind the occurance of such a rare pathological entity. Chondrolysis has to be put on the top of the list of complications that may occur following arthroscopy, whenever radio frequency energy tools are used. This is not because it is a common one, but because of the difficulty in managing it.

The arthroscope has served the orthopaedic surgeon as a diagnostic and operative tool since 1931. Several reports on its use in the treatment of extra-articular injuries have been published over the past few years. The surgical approach to the posterior ankle region is associated with some complications stemming from the poor blood supply to this region that can lead to wound complications and the formation of painful scars that later cause irritation when shoes are worn. We describe our experience in treating 3 hindfoot pathologic conditions, chronic Achilles tendonitis, os trigonum syndrome,

The purpose of this study was to describe and characterize the MR imaging findings in a group of patients who underwent surgery for adhesive capsulitis. Twenty-four MR imaging studies in 24 consecutive patients with clinical evidence of adhesive capsulitis were performed prior to arthroscopic capsulotomy. There were 17 women and 7 men with a mean age of 53.5 years. Images were scrutinised for changes in the synovium particularly in the rotator interval, around the biceps anchor and axillary pouch. Intravenous gadolinium was given routinely. We also examined a control group of 22 patients who u

Running injuries of the lower extremities are more frequent with increasing intensity and extent of training. Biomechanical investigations demonstrate that exertion induced injuries of the foot, achillotendinitis, patellar tendinitis and shin splint syndrome are correlated with disorders in footstrike patterns. Therefore running shoe insoles can eliminate peak forces by exactly placing supporting elements. Furthermore peak forces may be distributed and complaints may be reduced. 50 runners with exertion induced injuries of the lower extremity were provided with appropriate running shoe insoles

Two cases are reported of popliteal cysts simulating sural phlebitis, one in a patient with lupus, the other during the course of rheumatoid arthritis. Diagnosis is based upon the following signs: sudden onset of pain, sometimes after effort, and in the knee rather than in the calf, and more especially ecchymosis occurring in the internal supramalleolar region. The decision as to whether anticoagulant treatment should be instituted must be based on the certitude of the diagnosis, and this can be obtained in an atraumatic manner by ultrasonography of the popliteal fossa as shown by iconography.

Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) is a rare but potentially debilitating condition characterized by persistent shoulder pain and restricted movement that begins within 48 hours of vaccine administration into the deltoid region. Improper vaccine injection into the subacromial/subdeltoid region of the shoulder or glenohumeral joint can cause immune-mediated inflammatory response, adhesive capsulitis, rotator cuff tendonitis or tears, and septic subacromial bursitis or lytic lesions, among other injuries and reactions. The literature to date focuses on SIRVA prevention and…

Purpose The aim of this article is to illustrate the recent framework necessary to standardize studies on groin pain and review the existing literature on groin pain in football. Methods The common pathological processes underlying groin pain such as muscle, tendon or ligament strain, bone injury or fracture, sport hernia, bursitis, osteitis pubis, and hip-related diseases have been reviewed and current management options have been considered. Results Groin pain is considered a pain in pubic or lower abdominal or adductors region which can be monolateral or bilateral. It is common in high-i…

In addition to trochanteric bursitis, gluteus medius and minimus tears (GMMTs) can be a common source of insidious lateral hip pain and dysfunction. Partial-thickness GMMTs are much more common than full-thickness GMMTs but are frequently overlooked by both radiologists and orthopaedic surgeons. GMMTs are commonly identified on magnetic resonance imaging ordered for lateral hip pain unresponsive to conservative management. Imaging can show that high-grade partial articular gluteus tendon avulsion (PAGTA) can occur as either an isolated gluteus medius tear, an isolated gluteus minimus tear, or …

Infection of the Bursa of Fabricius with Cryptosporidium baileyi was diagnosed in a group of hand reared Red-breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator) ducklings during one breeding season in a German zoological garden. The birds had died in an emaciated and anaemic state after problems with spontaneous feeding. The bursae were infected with moderate to high numbers of cryptosporidia, which were associated with hyperplasia, degeneration and sloughing of the affected epithelial cells and mild heterophilic bursitis, lesions typically seen in bursal cryptosporidiosis in other avian species. In addition,…

Myofascial pain refers to a specific form of soft-tissue rheumatism that results from irritable foci (trigger points) within skeletal muscles and their ligamentous junctions. It must be distinguished from bursitis, tendonitis, hypermobility syndromes, fibromyalgia and fasciitis. On the other hand it often exists as part of a clinical complex that includes these other soft-tissue conditions, i.e., it is not a diagnosis of exclusion. The clinical science of trigger points can be traced to the pioneering work of Kellgren in the 1930s, with his mapping of myotomal referral patterns of pain resulti…
