Mediators of Capillary-to-Venule Conversion in the Chronic Inflammatory Skin Disease Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by epidermal hyperplasia and hyperkeratosis, immune cell infiltration and vas … c molecular repatterning associated with cell adhesion and extracellular matrix organization. Blood capillaries, in particular, showed upregulation of the melanoma cell adhesion molecule as well as its binding partners and adopted postcapillary venule‒like characteristics during chronic inflammation that are more permissive to leukocyte transmigration. We als …

Spinal epidural capillary hemangioma: A systematic literature review and an illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Spinal hemangiomas are rare vascular malformations resulting from proliferation of vascular endothelial cells. The cavernous form is the most common and represents 5-12% of spinal vascular malformations, while the capillary form is rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 56-year-old patient with no past medical history presented with progressive spinal cord compression symptoms localizing to the T10 level with MRC grade 4 proximal paraparesis. Preoperative MRI demonstrated a well-delineated, dumbbell-shaped, epidural lesion, without bony involvement, resulting in spinal cord compression at the

Capillary Malformation-arteriovenous Malformation Type 2: A Case Report and Review.

Capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation syndrome is a rare genodermatosis with cutaneous capillary malformations and a risk of associated fast-flow malformations. We describe here a four-generation family with a novel heterozygous pathogenic variant in the EPHB4 gene (NM_004444.5 (EPHB4): c.2224G>C, p.(Ala742Pro)). A review of the literature retrieved 127 patients with capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation syndrome and confirmed variants in EPHB4. Multiple capillary malformations were present in 114 (89.76%) patients, and 12 (9.44%) patients had a solitary capillary malfo

[Duodenal capillary hemangioma as an atypical cause of iron deficiency. Case report].

Hemangiomas are benign vascular gastrointestinal tumours. They are infrequent, located in the submucosa, and can be asymptomatic or cause intestinal obstruction, anaemia or ferropenia. Their initial diagnosis is usually endoscopic despite the absence of pathognomonic features. Traditionally their treatment has been surgical although endoscopic resection is now possible. We present a case of ferropenia resolved after endoscopic resection of a capillary duodenal hemangioma.

Capillary Blood Gas Predicts Risk of Intensive Care in Children with Bronchiolitis.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolitis may result in respiratory failure diagnosed with arterial blood gas (ABG). ABG is not routinely performed in general paediatric wards but is closely reflected by capillary blood gas (CBG). We sought to assess the usefulness of CBG results in prediction of intensive care unit (ICU) transfer, antibiotic treatment, and length of stay in children hospitalized due to bronchiolitis. METHODS: The optimal cutoff values were estimated with an ROC analysis, while a multiple regression model calculated the odds of an ICU transfer, prolonged hospitalization, and antibiotic treat

Fatal Exacerbations of Systemic Capillary Leak Syndrome Complicating Coronavirus Disease.

We report 2 fatal exacerbations of systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS), also known as Clarkson disease, associated with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the United States. One patient carried an established diagnosis of SCLS and the other sought treatment for new-onset hypotensive shock, hemoconcentration, and anasarca, classic symptoms indicative of an SCLS flare. Both patients had only mild-to-moderate symptoms of COVID-19. This clinical picture suggests that these patients succumbed to complications of SCLS induced by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Pers

Lobular Capillary Hemangioma of the External Jugular Vein: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Hemangiomas are benign tumors that are very common in the head and neck region. However, intravascular hemangiomas are very rare. Hemangiomas are classified as capillary, cavernous or mixed tumors according to the proliferating cells. Ultrasound, computed tomography, MR imaging and angiography are useful diagnostic tools and are generally required when planning surgical treatment. Definitive diagnosis is established by histopathological examination, differentiating hemangiomas from other vascular tumors or malignancies. CASE REPORT: We present a rare case of capillary hemangioma

[Idiopathic systemic capillary leak syndrome: 2 cases with misleading presentation].

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic systemic capillary leak syndrome (ISCLS) also known as Clarkson syndrome is a rare and sudden life-threatening entity. Three consecutive phases are described. A first non-specific prodromal phase often manifests as "flu-like" symptoms and precedes capillary leak phase with major hypovolemic and distributive shock leading to serious and frequent multiorgan dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Severe hypovolemia contrasts with edema, and hemoconcentration with hypoalbuminemia. ISCLS is characterized by these two clinical and biological paradoxes. Subsequent recovery phase exhibi

Extradural lumbar nerve root and ganglion capillary hemangioma: case report.

INTRODUCTION: Extradural spinal hemangiomas without vertebral body or intradural involvement are rare and often misdiagnosed. When present in the lumbar spine, they typically present with radiculopathy and weakness. CT imaging is helpful in assessing for bony involvement and temporal involvement while MRI imaging can be helpful in distinguishing hemangiomas from other mass lesions, however current reports on imaging features are limited. Diagnosis remains primarily dependent on tissue pathology with surgery as the mainstay of treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a unique case report in wh

Retinal and Choroidal Capillary Perfusion Are Reduced in Hypertensive Crisis Irrespective of Retinopathy.

PURPOSE: Hypertensive crisis causes end-organ damage through small-vessel damage as described histologically. Noninvasive optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) makes it possible to image retinal and choroidal capillaries on a microscopic level in vivo. We quantified eye vessel perfusion changes in hypertensive crisis using OCTA. METHODS: Patients with hypertensive crisis (systolic blood pressure ≥180 mm Hg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥110 mm Hg) and age-matched healthy controls were included in the study. OCTA en face 3 × 3-mm images of the superficial and deep retinal layers an…

Capillary Rarefaction in Obesity and Metabolic Diseases-Organ-Specificity and Possible Mechanisms.

Obesity and its comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension and other cardiovascular disorders are the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Metabolic diseases cause vascular dysfunction and loss of capillaries termed capillary rarefaction. Interestingly, obesity seems to affect capillary beds in an organ-specific manner, causing morphological and functional changes in some tissues but not in others. Accordingly, treatment strategies targeting capillary rarefaction result in distinct outcomes depending on the organ. In recent years, organ-specific vasculature and endothelial heteroge…

COVID-19 associated thromboinflammation of renal capillary: potential mechanisms and treatment.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has become a global pandemic disease with high morbidity and mortality. Inflammatory and thrombosis are its main manifestations. As an important organ of hemofiltration metabolism, the kidney is prone to blockage and destruction when filter high inflammatory and high viscous blood of COVID-19, resulting in the loss of a large amount of protein, aggravating blood concentration, and then worsening COVID-19 hypercoagulability, which may explain the phenomenon of erythrocytes aggregation bl

Retinal capillary basement membrane thickening: Role in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy.

Vascular basement membrane (BM) thickening has been hailed over half a century as the most prominent histological lesion in diabetic microan … ging data have established BM thickening as one of the foremost structural abnormalities of retinal capillaries. This fundamental structural change develops, at least in part, from excess accumulation of BM components. Although BM thickening is closely associated with the development of DR, its contributory role in the pathogenesis of DR is coming to light re …

Endothelial Autophagy: an Effective Target for Radiation-induced Cerebral Capillary Damage.

Toxicity to central nervous system tissues is the common side effects for radiotherapy of brain tumor. The radiation toxicity has been thought to be related to the damage of cerebral endothelium. However, because of lacking a suitable high-resolution vivo model, cellular response of cerebral capillaries to radiation remained unclear. Here, we present the flk:eGFP transgenic zebrafish larvae as a feasible model to study the radiation toxicity to cerebral capillary. We showed that, in living zebrafish larvae, radiation could induce acute cerebral capillary shrinkage and blood-flow obstruction, r…
