The electrical activity of the caecum and of the different parts of the colon was recorded from chronically implanted electrodes in the ovine and bovine species, the latter including cattle and calves before and after weaning. In the both species, colonic spiking activity consisted of spike bursts lasting from 5 to 13 s localized to the caecum and proximal colon, and of spike bursts lasting 3 to 8 s, localized to the spiral colon. Methods for the control of induced or simple hypocupraemia in cattle were tested using a free-choice copper supplement or by adding a soluble copper salt to the water supply, using a specially designed proportioner. One-hundred-and-thirty-nine animals from five breeds of cattle were studied cytogenetically. Three types of karyotype abnormalities were detected, two of them structural, t(1; 29) and ins(16), and one numerical (60,XY/61,XY + F). Fifty-six benign ocular squamous cell tumors and 20 squamous cell carcinomas were subjected to hyperthermia (50 C for 30 sec/cm2 of tumor surface) created by radio-frequency current from an electrothermal device. Thirty-four young range cattle heavily infested with the common scabies mite, Psoroptes ovis, were dipped in phosmet (O,O-dimethyl phosphorodithioate S-ester with N-(mercaptomethyl)phthalimide) in 15 trials. Toxicosis was induced in pregnant Holstein heifers by feeding FireMaster BP-6 (polybrominated biphenyls) in daily oral doses of 25 g/head/day for 33--60 days. Studies on the host preferences of Culicoides imicola, the vector of bluetongue virus in South Africa, are reviewed. There is agreement that this species prefers to feed on cattle but will also feed on other bovidae and sheep. Over a seven year period cattle kept near sheep on a Natal farm appear to have appreciably reduced the incidence of bluetongue in the sheep. In addition to immunization this "decoy" approach is therefore recommended to assist in the protection of stock from insect borne diseases such as bluetongue and possibly African horsesickness and Rift Valley fever.

Investigated were a total of 30 cattle 6 of which had experimental surgery infection and 24 showed spontaneously developing suppurative infection. The in vitro stimulation of small lymphocytes to blast formation, measured by the rate of 3H-thymidine incorporation, was used to study the occurrence of cells sensitive to antigens of Micropolyspora faeni in cattle.
