Structure and morphogenesis of the uterus, placenta, and paraplacental organs of the neotropical disc-winged bat Thyroptera tricolor spix (Microchiroptera: Thyropteridae).

The structure and development of the female reproductive tract, fetal membranes and placental have not previously been recorded for any member of the family Thyropteridae. Recently implanted embryos were obtained in late January, limb-bud stages in March, and full-term fetuses in late May, suggesting a possible gestation length of approximately five months. It is likely, however, that Thyroptera experiences at least two breeding cycles per year. The uterus was narrowly bicornuate; the corpus uteri was unusually large and lacked the glandular density observed in the cornua. The cervix was long,

Production of primate D-type virus interspecies-specific antigen during cocultivation of human breast fibroadenoma cells with bat lung cells.

Nine human breast fibroadenomas, initially negative for D-type retrovirus interspecies-specific antigen, do not produce that antigen during 6 months of cocultivation with bat lung cells. However, 3 out of 5 human breast fibroadenomas, already positive for D-type virus interspecies-specific antigen before cultivation, are able to induce a transient D-type retrovirus interspecies-specific antigen production after 3 to 4 months of cocultivation with bat lung cells. The antigen is detectable both in cocultivated cells and in pellets sedimented from the coculture fluid. It is concluded that D-type

One health, one goal: Global imperatives for Nipah virus vaccine development.

Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic, highly pathogenic, negative-sense RNA virus belonging to the genus Henipavirus (family Paramyxoviridae), causing severe encephalitis and/or acute respiratory illness in humans. Reported outbreaks show case-fatality rates ranging from approximately 40- 90%, influenced by healthcare quality, surveillance capacity, and clinical variability. Fruit bats (Pteropus spp.) serve as the natural reservoir, with transmission to humans occurring directly or through intermediate hosts such as pigs. Multiple outbreaks have confirmed efficient human-to-human spread, especially

New parajeilongviruses detected in bats but not in humans: assays for screening and diagnostic purposes.

To enhance preparedness against existing and new zoonotic viruses such as Hendra virus, Nipah virus, and other paramyxoviruses, screening tools and efficient diagnostic methods are needed. Here, we established a conventional nested pan-PCR assay using previously described primers for screening of human and bat samples. Additionally, we developed specific real-time RT-PCR (RT-qPCR) assays to detect Nipah virus and Hendra virus genotypes 1 and 2. Both PCR methods demonstrated good performance and could be used for screening of paramyxoviruses. Human serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples from 558

Characterisation of Typical Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (tEPEC) and bfpA Genes From Five Bat Species Reveals Australian Pteropus Spp. Are Natural tEPEC Hosts.

Humans have historically been considered the only natural host of typical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (tEPEC), a cause of human infantile diarrhoea. Recent findings of bat-specific tEPEC in two Australian bat species (Pteropus poliocephalus and Pteropus conspicillatus) revealed that these Pteropus spp. are also tEPEC hosts. tEPEC pathogenicity is associated with key virulence factors including intimin (eae) and the bundle-forming pilus (bfp) operon, which contains the bfpA gene. This study characterised 63 tEPEC isolates from five Australian Pteropus spp.; four from mainland Australia (P

Molecular Detection and Genetic Diversity of Bat-Associated Bartonella spp. in Bat Ectoparasites Collected From Ratchaburi Province, Thailand.

INTRODUCTION: Bats are known to harbour Bartonella bacteria, which can be found in several species of bats. Various ectoparasites can infest bats and harbour the bacteria, serving as important vectors for diverse Bartonella species. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and diversity of Bartonella spp. in bat ectoparasites, as well as to identify the species of ectoparasites involved. METHODS: Bat ectoparasites were collected from four species of insectivorous bats in Ratchaburi, central Thailand. The ectoparasites were identified using the Cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene (bat fli

Diverse bat organoids provide pathophysiological models for zoonotic viruses.

Bats are important reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens, but suitable model systems for comprehensively exploring host-pathogen interactions and assessing spillover risks remain limited. To address this gap, we developed a collection of bat organoid models spanning five species and four organ types. This multispecies, multiorgan organoid panel showed species- and tissue-specific replication patterns for several viruses, offering robust pathophysiological models for studying respiratory, renal, and enteric zoonotic viruses. Using this platform, we successfully isolated and characterized bat-borne m

Marburg and Kasokero viruses elicit differential antiviral innate immune control by their natural reservoir bat, the Egyptian rousette (Rousettus aegyptiacus).

To investigate the antiviral innate immune responses of natural reservoir bats, we conducted a histopathological analysis of Egyptian rousettes (Rousettus aegyptiacus) experimentally infected with either of two divergent RNA viruses they naturally host, Marburg virus (MARV; family Filoviridae) and Kasokero virus (KASV; family Nairoviridae). Bats were serially euthanized at similar post-infection time points and tissue-based analyses focused on the liver, the primary target for both viruses. At 3 days post-infection (DPI), in situ hybridization (ISH) signal for replicating MARV was 300x less ev

Microbial community dynamics in blood, faeces and oral secretions of neotropical bats in Casanare, Colombia.

Bats are known reservoirs for a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, helminths, and protozoa, which can be transmitted and infect other zoonotic organisms. Various studies have utilised next-generation sequencing (NGS) to describe the pathogens associated with bats. Although most have characterised microbial communities in specific body fluids, few have analysed the composition and diversity of these microbial communities across different body fluids at the individual level. In this study, we employed two next-generation sequencing techniques: amplicon-b

Recombination analysis on the receptor switching event of MERS-CoV and its close relatives: implications for the emergence of MERS-CoV.

BACKGROUND: PlMERS-CoV is a coronavirus known to cause severe disease in humans, taxonomically classified under the subgenus Merbecovirus. Recent findings showed that the close relatives of MERS-CoV infecting vespertillionid bats (family Vespertillionidae), named NeoCoV and PDF-2180, use their hosts' ACE2 as their entry receptor, unlike the DPP4 receptor usage of MERS-CoV. Previous research suggests that this difference in receptor usage between these related viruses is a result of recombination. However, the precise location of the recombination breakpoints and the details of the recombinatio

Development of a Měnglà virus minigenome and comparison of its polymerase complexes with those of other filoviruses.

Ebola virus (EBOV) and Marburg virus (MARV), members of the Filoviridae family, are highly pathogenic and can cause hemorrhagic fevers, significantly impacting human society. Bats are considered reservoirs of these viruses because related filoviruses have been discovered in bats. However, due to the requirement for maximum containment laboratories when studying infectious viruses, the characterization of bat filoviruses often relies on pseudoviruses and minigenome systems. In this study, we used RACE technology to sequence the 3'-leader and 5'-trailer of Měnglà virus (MLAV) and constructed a m

Rabies virus circulation in a highly diverse bat assemblage from a high-risk area for zoonoses outbreaks in the Brazilian Amazon.

Bats are the second most diverse order of mammals and play a central role in ecosystem dynamics. They are also important reservoirs of potentially zoonotic microorganisms, of which rabies virus is the most lethal among the bat-transmitted zoonotic pathogens. Importantly, recent outbreaks of human rabies have been reported from the Brazilian Amazon. Here we present a survey of bat species and rabies virus (RABV) circulation in a bat assemblage in the Marajó region, northern Brazil. Using data from mist-net captures and bioacoustic sampling, 56 bat species were recorded along the Jacundá River b

Synanthropic and Wild Animals as Sentinels of Zoonotic Agents: A Study of Leptospira Genotypes Circulating in Northeastern Italy.

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease widely reported in veterinary practice and a worldwide zoonosis. In Northeastern Italy, different serogroups and genotypes of Leptospira have been described in ill dogs, the most commonly detected being Icterohaemorragiae (ICT) ST 17, Australis (AUS) ST 24 and ST 198, Pomona (POM) ST 117 and ST 289, and Sejroe (SEJ) ST 155. However, there is little information available on the environmental exposure to Leptospira of wild and synanthropic animals. The aim of this study was to identify the circulating genotypes in potential reservoirs to fill this gap of kn

Correlates of deviance detection in auditory brainstem responses of bats.

Identifying unexpected acoustic inputs, which allows to react appropriately to new situations, is of major importance for animals. Neural deviance detection describes a change of neural response strength to a stimulus solely caused by the stimulus' probability of occurrence. In the present study, we searched for correlates of deviance detection in auditory brainstem responses obtained in anaesthetised bats (Carollia perspicillata). In an oddball paradigm, we used two pure tone stimuli that represented the main frequencies used by the animal during echolocation (60 kHz) and communication (20 kH

Hearing sensitivity: An underlying mechanism for niche differentiation in gleaning bats.

Tropical ecosystems are known for high species diversity. Adaptations permitting niche differentiation enable species to coexist. Historically, research focused primarily on morphological and behavioral adaptations for foraging, roosting, and other basic ecological factors. Another important factor, however, is differences in sensory capabilities. So far, studies mainly have focused on the output of behavioral strategies of predators and their prey preference. Understanding the coexistence of different foraging strategies, however, requires understanding underlying cognitive and neural mechani

Culture, expansion, and flow-cytometry-based functional analysis of pteropid bat MR1-restricted unconventional T cells.

Bats harbor viruses of global public health significance. Understanding bat immune systems may provide intervention strategies to prevent zoonotic disease transmission and identify therapeutic targets. This protocol describes how to culture and expand pteropid bat unconventional T cells, restricted by the MHC-I-related protein 1 (MR1), an MHC-I-like protein. Using multicolor flow-cytometry-based techniques, we examine pteropid MR1T cell functionality, including proliferative capacity, cytotoxicity, and cytokine production. This protocol can be adapted to aid immunological research in other bat

Seroprevalence of Toscana Virus and Sandfly Fever Sicilian Virus in European Bat Colonies Measured Using a Neutralization Test.

Toscana phlebovirus (TOSV) and Sicilian phlebovirus (SFSV) are endemic in the Mediterranean area where they are transmitted to humans by infected sandflies. Vertebrates of several species have been postulated to act as reservoirs of these viruses, but convincing evidence is still awaited. Among them, bats have been suggested, however documented evidence is lacking. Here we tested a total of 329 bats belonging to eight species collected from twelve localities in southern Spain for the presence of neutralizing antibodies specific to TOSV and SFSV. Positive sera were detected in Schreiber's long-
