Focal choroidal excavation: Cause or effect?

We report the imaging characteristics of focal choroidal excavation (FCE) and associated choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM) and interpret the probable etiopathogenesis of FCE through findings in four patients detected by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). FCE was found as an acquired entity in two of our cases subsequent to treatment of CNVM, whereas in the two other cases FCE was pre-existing. Furthermore, association of FCE with pachychoroid spectrum is reaffirmed through this case series.

Pathomechanism of traumatic indirect choroidal rupture.

The probable chain of events responsible for choroidal rupture is as follows. During high-speed orbital injuries, the protective ocular reflexes position the eye in an elevated, and abducted position. At this point in time, the anteroposterior compressive forces on to the globe create an eccentrically positioned circle of damaging currents along the posterior ocular coats against a relatively static optic nerve. Because of this eccentricity, a longer radius of curvature is expected to lie along the temporal half of the globe leading to an elastic recoil of the retinal and scleral layers and a …

Widefield imaging of retinal and choroidal tumors.

Following the publication of the above article, a concerned reader drew to the authors' attention that the immunohistochemical data shown for the 'Collagen I/Control' panel in Fig. 5B on p. 1104, and the 'β‑catenin/DKK' panel for the immunofluorescence data shown in Fig. 7B on p. 1106, subsequently appeared in a pair of later publications by the same research group. In addition, in Fig. 5B, the 'Vimentin/ALI' and 'Vimentin/ALI+MSC‑GFP' data panels were found to contain an overlapping section, such that data which were intended to show the results of differently performed experiments had appare

WNT7A/B promote choroidal neovascularization.

Perturbations in WNT signaling are associated with congenital eye disorders, including familial exudative vitreoretinopathy and Norrie disease. More recently, activation of the WNT pathway has also been shown to be associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In this study, we identified that in choroidal neovascular membranes from AMD patients, β-catenin is activated specifically in the vascular endothelium, suggesting that WNT promotes pathologic angiogenesis by directly affecting vascular endothelial cells. WNT7B has been shown to be important during eye development for regressio…

Decreased choroidal thickness in vitiligo patients.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a disease characterized by depigmented macules and patches that occur as a result of the loss of functional melanocytes from the affected skin through a mechanism which has not been elucidated yet. Destruction of pigment cells in vitiligo may not remain limited to the skin; the eyelashes, iris, ciliary body, choroid, retinal pigment epithelium and meninges may also be affected. This study aims to compare the choroidal thickness of patients with and without vitiligo using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS: Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) …

Phacoemulsification in Eyes With Posttrabeculectomy Choroidal Detachment.

Four patients developed choroidal detachment within 3 months after trabeculectomy, documented with b-scan ultrasonography (BUS) and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM). Intraocular pressure (IOP) of the patients ranged from 3 to 5 mm Hg. Patients were treated with cycloplegia and steroids without complete resolution of detachment. Twelve months later all patients had developed visually significant cataracts and underwent phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. Procedures were uncomplicated. Visual acuity ranged 0.1 to 0 LogMAR in the first postoperative month. IOP demonstrated an inc…

Neural control of choroidal blood flow.

The choroid is richly innervated by parasympathetic, sympathetic and trigeminal sensory nerve fibers that regulate choroidal blood flow in birds and mammals, and presumably other vertebrate classes as well. The parasympathetic innervation has been shown to vasodilate and increase choroidal blood flow, the sympathetic input has been shown to vasoconstrict and decrease choroidal blood flow, and the sensory input has been shown to both convey pain and thermal information centrally and act locally to vasodilate and increase choroidal blood flow. As the choroid lies behind the retina and cannot res…

Dengue associated choroiditis: a rare entity.

BACKGROUND: We report a case of choroiditis during dengue fever. RESULTS: A 35-year-old female presented with blurring of vision during dengue fever. Her fundus examination revealed yellow deep choroidal lesions at right macula, multiple small, yellowish subretinal macular dots along papillomacular bundle, and hyperemic disc. There was a small retinal hemorrhage at temporal margin of disc. The left eye had similar small discrete lesion superonasal and inferotemporal to macula. CONCLUSIONS: We report a hitherto undescribed case of choroiditis in a dengue patient.

Alterations of Choroidal Thickness With Diabetic Neuropathy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of diabetic polyneuropathy on choroidal thickness in type 2 diabetes patients. METHODS: Forty-one diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) patients with no or mild retinopathy, 50 non-DPN diabetic patients with no or mild retinopathy, and 42 healthy controls without any retinal complaint were included in the study. All participants underwent detailed ophthalmic examinations. Choroidal thickness (CT) measurements were performed by the same independent technician in the morning between 9 and 11 AM to avoid diurnal variations. Perpendicular CT was measured from the outer edg…

CHOROIDAL THICKNESS IN INFANTS WITH RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY.

PURPOSE: To evaluate choroidal thickness in premature infants and its relationship with stage of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). METHODS: Spectral domain optical coherence tomography imaging for measuring subfoveal choroidal thickness was performed for 80 premature infants. Subfoveal choroidal thickness was defined as the distance from the hyperreflective line of the outermost retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) to the innermost hyperreflective line of the choroidoscleral junction. Each measurement was performed at the central fovea (…
