Prediction of leptospirosis outbreaks by hydroclimatic covariates: a comparative study of statistical models.

Leptospirosis, the infectious disease caused by a spirochete bacteria, is a major public health problem worldwide. In Argentina, some regions have climatic and geographical characteristics that favor the habitat of bacteria of the Leptospira genus, whose survival strongly depends on climatic factors, enhanced by climate change, which increase the problems associated with people's health. In order to have a method to predict leptospirosis cases, in this paper, five time series forecasting methods are compared: two parametric (autoregressive integrated moving average and an alternative one that

Did Late Pleistocene climate change result in parallel genetic structure and demographic bottlenecks in sympatric Central African crocodiles, Mecistops and Osteolaemus?

The mid-Holocene has had profound demographic impacts on wildlife on the African continent, although there is little known about the impacts on species from Central Africa. Understanding the impacts of climate change on codistributed species can enhance our understanding of ecosystem dynamics and for formulating restoration objectives. We took a multigenome comparative approach to examine the phylogeographic structure of two poorly known Central African crocodile species-Mecistops sp. aff. cataphractus and Osteolaemus tetraspis. In addition, we conducted coalescent-based demographic reconstruc

Influenza virus-flow from insects to humans as causative for influenza seasonality.

Virus biomass outweighs human biomass, and insects biomass outweighs human biomass. Insects are regularly habited by viruses as well as humans, humans are further inhabited via insects. A model of viral flow is described and specified to explain influenza virus seasonality, which, in temperate climate, usually evolves when insects have mostly disappeared. With this hypothesis a coherent description of regular seasonal influenza and other seasonal respiratory virus infections in temperate climates is possible. The incidence of influenza under different circumstances e.g. temperature, humidity,

Antagonistic pleiotropy at the stem solidness 1 locus balances wheat stem architecture and yield components under terminal drought.

Stem structural investment enhances grain size and yield under drought, challenging the traditional view of vegetative-reproductive trade-offs. Antagonistic pleiotropy at the SSt1 locus reveals a genetic constraint between stem diameter and solidness. Incorporating genotype-by-environment into genomic selection models improves prediction accuracy by 46.5%. Terminal drought is the primary environmental constraint on wheat productivity in the Mediterranean basin, a challenge intensifying under climate change. While stem biomass investment is known to promote grain-filling under stress, its under

Novel tools for the surveillance and control of dengue: findings by the DengueTools research consortium.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever persists as a major global disease burden, and may increase as a consequence of climate change. Along with other measures, research actions to improve diagnosis, surveillance, prevention, and predictive models are highly relevant. The European Commission funded the DengueTools consortium to lead a major initiative in these areas, and this review synthesises the outputs and findings of this work conducted from 2011 to 2016. Research areas: DengueTools organised its work into three research areas, namely [1] Early warning and surveillance systems; [2] Strategies to preve

Thermal bottlenecks constrain early-life survival of native fish in regulated rivers.

Climate change is reshaping thermal regimes worldwide, threatening species whose early development depends on narrow temperature ranges. Yet directly linking warming to reproductive failure in wild populations remains intractable, particularly in aquatic ecosystems. We developed an empirical framework integrating stable isotope thermometry of archival tissues, landscape-scale temperature modeling, and field surveys to identify when and where successful reproduction occurs. Applying this approach to endangered winter-run Chinook salmon confined below a large dam, we revealed a narrow "critical

siRNA-guided DNA-methylation at a sucrose transporter gene potentially contributes to climatic plant adaptation.

Climatic adaptation of plants involves the adjustment of carbon transport to achieve an optimal balance between carbon assimilation and carbon utilization. This study describes a potential molecular mechanism of this adjustment by investigating the climate-dependent regulation of SUCROSE TRANSPORTER 2 (SUC2) in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. SUC2 is responsible for loading photosynthetically-produced sucrose into the leaf vascular system. Its protein and mRNA abundance in A. thaliana natural accessions were found to correlate with leaf sucrose export and summer temperature. Exploration

Reconstruction of long-term hourly sea level data for Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Regional sea level rise has been regarded a key factor in understanding of climate change impact to coastal communities. As a vulnerable island to sea level rise and storm surges, the province of Prince Edward Island (PEI) in Canada lacks sufficient long-term island-wide historic record of sea level data. This has become a major challenge for further studies on coastal environments and climate change adaptation. To overcome this limitation, here we reconstruct a long-term hourly sea level dataset using the existing long-term records of limited permanent tide stations and short-term records of

Zoning of Integrated Quality Regions for Alpinia officinarum Hance Based on a Multi-Model Evaluation System.

Understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics of medicinal plant distributions and their quality responses under climate change is essential for formulating forward-looking conservation and utilization strategies. In response to the increasing depletion of wild resources of Alpinia officinarum Hance, one of the 'Ten Major Guangdong Medicinal Materials', this study developed an integrated modeling platform incorporating nine algorithms. These included generalized linear models, machine learning techniques, and a MaxEnt model optimized using ENMeval (Regularization Multiplier (RM) = 3, Feature Class

Comparative Study of Thermal Accumulation and Adaptive Responses of Forsythia × intermedia Zabel and Kerria japonica (L.) DC. 'Pleniflora' Under Conditions of Climatic Fluctuations.

The study establishes a locally specific basis that may serve as an indicator for the selection of climate-adaptive taxa in urban landscape design through a comparative evaluation of the effects of thermal anomalies on the flowering phenodynamics of Forsythia × intermedia and Kerria japonica 'Pleniflora' in Belgrade (2007-2026). By integrating empirical phenological parameters into a long-term climatological retrospective, the study bridges a methodological gap and distinguishes anthropogenic influences from regional climatic fluctuations. Non-parametric analyses identified a stable long-term

Modeling potential risk areas of Orthohantavirus transmission in Northwestern Argentina using an ecological niche approach.

BACKGROUND: Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a rodent-borne zoonosis in the Americas, with up to 50% mortality rates. In Argentina, the Northwestern endemic area presents half of the annually notified HPS cases in the country, transmitted by at least three rodent species recognized as reservoirs of Orthohantavirus. The potential distribution of reservoir species based on ecological niche models (ENM) can be a useful tool to establish risk areas for zoonotic diseases. Our main aim was to generate an Orthohantavirus risk transmission map based on ENM of the reservoir species in northwest A

Predicting the effects of climate change on Schistosoma mansoni transmission in eastern Africa.

BACKGROUND: Survival and fitness attributes of free-living and sporocyst schistosome life-stages and their intermediate host snails are sensitive to water temperature. Climate change may alter the geographical distribution of schistosomiasis by affecting the suitability of freshwater bodies for hosting parasite and snail populations. METHODS: We have developed an agent-based model of the temperature-sensitive stages of the Schistosoma mansoni and intermediate host snail lifecycles. The model was run using low, moderate and high warming climate projections over eastern Africa. For each climate

Avian GIS models signal human risk for West Nile virus in Mississippi.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) poses a significant health risk for residents of Mississippi. Physicians and state health officials are interested in new and efficient methods for monitoring disease spread and predicting future outbreaks. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) models have the potential to support these efforts. Environmental conditions favorable for mosquito habitat were modeled using GIS to derive WNV risk maps for Mississippi. Variables important to WNV dissemination were selected and classified as static and dynamic. The static variables included road density, stream densit

Global and regional prediction of heterakidosis population prevalence in extensive backyard chickens in low-income and middle-income countries.

Extensive backyard chickens are one of the most common production systems in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). In this production system, chickens are exposed to infectious forms of parasites as a result of the outdoor access and scavenging behaviour. Heterakis gallinarum is one of the most common nematode parasites present in the environment, and estimating its global and regional prevalence is essential for attributing the economic losses in extensive backyard chickens. The objective of this study is to predict the prevalence of heterakidosis in extensive backyard chickens at g

Climate change influences on the annual onset of Lyme disease in the United States.

Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne illness in the United States. Lyme disease occurrence is highly seasonal and the annual springtime onset of cases is modulated by meteorological conditions in preceding months. A meteorological-based empirical model for Lyme disease onset week in the United States is driven with downscaled simulations from five global climate models and four greenhouse gas emissions scenarios to project the impacts of 21st century climate change on the annual onset week of Lyme disease. Projections are made individually and collectively for the 12 eastern…

Snowmelt dynamics and stream flow response to climate change in a mountainous basin, western Himalaya.

Snow is a critical component of the Himalayan hydrological cycle, sustaining streamflow, recharging groundwater, rejuvenating springs, maintaining soil moisture, and supporting various water-dependent sectors. However, climate warming is reducing seasonal snow cover and altering snowmelt timing, thereby increasing uncertainty in the relative contributions of snowmelt, rainfall, and groundwater to streamflow and limiting reliable prediction of future water availability. To address this scientific question, we integrated 24 years of satellite-derived snow-cover observations with field-based stab
