Thermal responses and climate change implications of spring and autumn spawning Patagonian squid (Doryteuthis gahi) embryos.

Ocean warming affects ectotherm physiological and phenological processes, potentially creating mismatches between early life stages and their prey. Seasonal spawning cohorts are thought to provide flexibility in responding to environmental variability, but if there is seasonal adaptation between these cohorts, then they may respond to ocean warming differently, affecting species resilience and potentially impacting the wider food web. We tested the response to warming of egg masses and paralarvae from two spawning cohorts (autumn and spring) of the Patagonian squid (Doryteuthis gahi). Treated

An implementation "Field Trial" of DBT for adolescents with bipolar disorder: Training procedures and therapist outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The only efficacious psychosocial intervention for decreasing suicide attempts among adolescents with bipolar disorder (BP) is an adaptation of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Yet myriad factors, including clinician training, limit DBT uptake. To enhance dissemination, we systematically operationalized, implemented and studied procedures for training and supervising community clinicians to adherently deliver DBT for adolescents with BP. METHODS: This study was conducted at a University-affiliated clinic serving youth with BP. Guided by the Enhanced-Replicating Effective Progra

Data driven prediction of uranium in groundwater for environmental radioactivity surveillance.

Uranium occurrence in groundwater is governed by complex hydrogeochemical processes, yet routine monitoring remains analytically demanding. A dataset of 1295 groundwater samples collected from a coastal region of southeastern India during 2016-2025 was used to develop a machine learning framework for predicting uranium concentrations from routinely measured physicochemical parameters. Multi-threshold binary classification was implemented at 2, 15, and 30 µg L⁻1, representing precautionary, guideline, and regulatory levels, respectively. Advanced ensemble learning algorithms were evaluated unde

Safety and Efficacy of Inhaled Natural Product Powders That Enhance Mucociliary Clearance.

Mucociliary clearance is the lung's primary defense against inhaled pathogens and particulates, requiring optimal airway surface liquid hydration, mucus rheology, and coordinated ciliary beating. Diseases and pollutants disrupt these processes through altered ion transport, elevated pH and calcium, and goblet cell hyperplasia that leads to viscous mucus and airway obstruction. This process depends on chloride and bicarbonate secretion, nitric oxide-driven ciliary motility, and bronchodilation to maintain mucus fluidity and clearance. This study was conducted to determine if inhalable dry-powde

Embodied scarcity: An interpretative phenomenological inquiry into food insecurity and mental health wellness among women residing in environmentally vulnerable southwest coastal Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity in climate-vulnerable coastal settings extends beyond limited food access or availability; it is lived as a gendered, embodied, and psychosocial experience. Guided by Psychological Stress Theory, the stress process model, and gendered embodiment, we use "embodied scarcity" to describe how inadequate and uncertain food access becomes bodily, emotional, moral, and relational suffering as women absorb household deprivation through hunger, nutritional self-denial, caregiving responsibility, shame, and constrained coping. This study explores how women in southwest coasta

Methodology for automated greenhouse gas data collection and transmission to cloud repository using low-cost drones.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are crucial for monitoring and mitigating climate change and the degradation of sensitive biomes. Such demand motivates the search for automated processes to collect and manage GHG emissions data, with open access to researchers and institutions working with sustainability. This work proposes an automated data collection process using low-cost drones, with direct data transfer to a cloud-based data space. Low-cost drones were equipped with onboard sensors to measure CO 2 and methane emissions. The focus was not on data accuracy but on automating data collectio

Regulatory mechanisms in Anadara granosa with different hemoglobin concentrations in response to heat stress.

Climate change impacts the physiological processes of species, with rising seawater temperatures posing severe existential threats to marine mollusks. Therefore, studying the responses of marine organisms to heat stress is crucial. The blood clam, Anadara granosa, is a marine bivalve species that contains hemoglobin, and individuals with higher hemoglobin concentrations (HCs) exhibit better physiological health. In this study, we analyzed the regulatory mechanisms in the blood clam with different HCs in response to heat stress. Enzyme activity indicates that blood clams with different HC level

The divergence between chronic offshore acidification and volatile estuarine pH dynamics: A 60-Year East China sea record.

Coastal ocean acidification in river-dominated marginal seas exhibits distinct evolutionary trajectories from the open ocean. However, quantitatively decoupling its multi-stressor drivers remains challenging due to historical data scarcity and the confounding effects of shifting hydrology and localized human activities. We established a robust calibration framework using sedimentary 3‑hydroxy fatty acids to reconstruct a 60-year pH history in the Changjiang Estuary and the adjacent East China Sea shelf. Our reconstruction reveals that the shelf water pH declined at a rate of -0.00093 units yr-

Heat-actuated valve implementation in a point-of-care, paper-based microfluidic device for infectious disease detection.

Paper-based microfluid devices have great potential to perform complex assays like nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) in point-of-care (POC) and low resource settings, but have not often succeeded because there is frequently need for affordable and simple solutions to address complex fluidics and sample delivery without risk of contamination. These issues are exacerbated when multiple sample processing procedures must be automated by valve integration in the absence of advanced supportive instrumentation or trained personnel. For NAAT application in remote or home environments, valving w

Experimental manipulation of freshwater wetland hydroperiod alters litter decomposition and macroinvertebrate assemblage structure.

Climate-driven shifts in hydrological cycling are altering freshwater wetlands globally and may disrupt carbon processing, yet the impacts on litter decomposition and the underlying drivers are still poorly understood. We experimentally manipulated hydroperiod in twelve wetlands in Georgia, U.S. to include permanent, temporary, and dry ponds from 2018 to 2021. Litterbags were deployed and collected at early (30-day), mid (60-day), and late (90-day) sampling intervals to quantify detrital processing including decomposition rate (n = 343) and macroinvertebrate assemblages (n = 148). Single-step pyrolytic synthesis of ultra-microporous ammonialized biochar for carbon dioxide capture.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a significant greenhouse gas that plays a pivotal role in driving global warming and climate change. Its primary sources stem from human activities, notably transportation, power generation, and industrial processes. Directly capturing CO2 emissions at their origins is widely recognized as a potent and efficient approach to reducing emissions. Biochar has emerged as a promising material for capturing CO2 owing to its stability, hydrophobic nature, ease of preparation, and economic advantages. Nevertheless, its ability to adsorb CO2 is constrained in environments with re

Lattice Engineering in Hydroxyapatite Enables Direct Photocatalytic Synthesis of C4 Products from CO2.

Amid the burst of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and conversion technologies, research prioritizing industrially feasible catalysts is vital to minimize climate change effects. In the present work, permanently polarized hydroxyapatite-based biphasic systems have been strategically designed through vacancy engineering and a thermally stimulated polarization (TSP) process, achieving a 15% selectivity toward C3-C4 products through a single-step CO2 continuous-flow reaction (CO2-to-C3+) under solar light irradiation and mild reaction conditions. To elucidate the underlying catalytic mechanism, exten

Transcriptomic study of muscle in response to heat in Triplophysa yarkandensis.

Triplophysa yarkandensis is an economically important fish species native to the Tarim River of Xinjiang, China. Amid ongoing climate warming and rising temperatures in the Tarim River, T. yarkandensis has demonstrated a degree of physiological adaptation to heat stress. However, the underlying mechanisms of this thermal adaptation and the impact of high-temperature stress on gene expression profiles remain poorly understood. Investigating its heat tolerance genes can aid in protecting wild populations from the threat of endangerment due to ecological damage. Based on the optimal growth temper

Research on the synergistic effects of market-oriented environmental regulations on pollution and carbon emission reduction.

The reduction of greenhouse gases and atmospheric pollutants is a crucial aspect of environmental and climate governance. This paper utilizes pollution rights trading and carbon emissions trading policies as quasi-natural experiments to examine their effects. A difference-in-differences-in-differences (DDD) empirical model is used to analyze the data at the prefecture-level city level. The effectiveness of market-oriented environmental regulations in promoting synergistic reductions of pollutants and carbon emissions is assessed. The findings reveal that (1) carbon emissions trading and pollut

Temperature effects for tetrachloroethylene removal with NZVI between 10 and 55 °C in flow-through column experiments.

Subsurface utilization for underground thermal energy storage (UTES) in urban areas can promote a sustainable and climate-neutral heat supply. Meanwhile, frequent subsoil contamination raises the question of whether the stored heat could be used for remediation, which can benefit from increased temperatures (e.g., by increased reactivity and desorption processes or enhanced microbial degradation). We focus on nanoscale zerovalent iron (NZVI), which is suitable for chlorinated hydrocarbon remediation. However, the potential benefits or drawbacks of increased temperatures for groundwater remedia

Two sub-annual timescales and coupling modes for terrestrial water and carbon cycles.

To bridge the knowledge gap between (a) our (instantaneous-to-seasonal-scale) process understanding of plants and water and (b) our projections of long-term coupled feedbacks between the terrestrial water and carbon cycles, we must uncover what the dominant dynamics are linking fluxes of water and carbon. This study uses the simplest empirical dynamical systems models-two-dimensional linear models-and observation-based data from satellites, eddy covariance towers, weather stations, and machine-learning-derived products to determine the dominant sub-annual timescales coupling carbon uptake and

Life in the margins: the effect of immersion/emersion and tidal cycle on the North Atlantic limpet Patella vulgata protein synthesis rates.

Biological processes in intertidal species follow tidal rhythms that enhance survival and fitness. Whereas tidal effects on behaviour and metabolic rates have been widely studied, impacts on other key process such as protein synthesis are still poorly understood. To date, no studies have examined the effect of immersion/emersion and tidal cycles on protein synthesis rates (ks). Patella vulgata is an intertidal limpet present in North-Eastern Atlantic rocky shores from high to low shore. Previously reported P. vulgata respiration and heart rate measurements suggest aerobic metabolism is maintai

Differentiating low-carbon waste management strategies for bio-based and biodegradable plastics under various energy decarbonization scenarios.

Bio-based and biodegradable (bio-)plastics are heralded as a key solution to mitigate plastic pollution and reduce CO2 emissions. Yet, their end-of-life treatments embodies complex energy and material interactions, potentially leading to emissions through incineration or recycling. This study investigates the cradle-to-grave, emphasizing the waste management stage, carbon footprint for several types of bio-plastics, leveraging both GWP100a and CO2 uptake methods to explore the carbon reduction benefits of recycling over disposal. Our findings indicate that in scenarios characterized by carbon-
