Model-based lesion mapping of cognitive control using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test.

The role of the frontal lobes in cognition and behavior has long been enigmatic. Over the past decade, computational models have provided a powerful approach to understanding cognition and decision-making. Here, we used a model-based approach to analyze data from a classical task used to assess frontal lobe function, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. We applied computational modeling and voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping in 328 patients with focal lesions, to uncover cognitive processes and neural correlates of test scores. Our results reveal that lesions in the right prefrontal cortex are ass

Mechanical problem solving by plush-crested jays: are tools special after all?

Tool use is taxonomically associated with high behavioural flexibility and innovativeness, and its prevalence is greater in primates and some bird species. This association, however, is not known to be causally determinant of tool-related competence since flexibility and innovativeness are often observed in the absence of tool use and vice versa. For this reason, it is interesting to explore whether animals that can be loosely categorized as outstanding, or 'intelligent' physical problem solvers, are also remarkable using tools innovatively, rather than tool use presenting special constraints.

Work-Related Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for racially and economically diverse unemployed persons with social anxiety: A randomized clinical trial.

Individuals with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) are at risk for employment problems. This multi-site trial examined the efficacy of Work-Related Cognitive Behavioral Therapy provided alongside vocational services as usual (WCBT+VSAU), a group-based treatment designed to improve mental health and employment outcomes for individuals with SAD. Vocational service-seeking participants with SAD (N = 250) were randomized to either WCBT+VSAU or VSAU-alone. Hypotheses were that participants randomized to WCBT+VSAU would report less social anxiety, less depression, and more hours worked than participants

Predictive Validity of Motor Fitness and Flexibility Tests in Adults and Older Adults: A Systematic Review.

Motor fitness and flexibility have been linked to several health issues. We aimed to investigate the predictive validity of motor fitness and flexibility tests in relation to health outcomes in adults and older adults. Web of Science and PubMed databases were screened for studies published from inception to November 2020. Two authors systematically searched, evaluated, and extracted data from identified original studies and systematic reviews/meta-analysis. Three levels of evidence were constructed: strong, moderate, and limited/inconclusive evidence. In total, 1182 studies were identified, an

Parent ratings of executive functioning in children with shunted hydrocephalus.

OBJECTIVES: The present study examined the executive functioning of a group of children with a history of communicating hydrocephalus and how their level of functioning was correlated with parent ratings of executive functioning. METHODS: The study examined the executive functioning of 39 shunted children with a history of hydrocephalus and 20 healthy peers. Additionally, parents of both groups of children completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) to assess the parents' perceptions of their children's executive functioning. Finally, the study investigated the relat

Learning and cognition in highspeed decision making.

It is widely accepted that more time and information yield better decisions. However, some decisions manage to be extremely fast and yet accurate. The trick of such highspeed decisions appears to be the use of simplifying heuristics that works well for the most common condition but lacks flexibility otherwise. Here, we describe an unexpected level of flexibility in a complex highspeed decision that is made faster than an Olympic sprinter can respond to the start gun. In this decision, archerfish observe the initial speed, direction, and height of falling prey and then use these initial values

A role for the claustrum in cognitive control.

Early hypotheses of claustrum function were fueled by neuroanatomical data and yielded suggestions that the claustrum is involved in processes ranging from salience detection to multisensory integration for perceptual binding. While these hypotheses spurred useful investigations, incompatibilities inherent in these views must be reconciled to further conceptualize claustrum function amid a wealth of new data. Here, we review the varied models of claustrum function and synthesize them with developments in the field to produce a novel functional model: network instantiation in cognitive control

Varied effects of age-related neuropathologies on the trajectory of late life cognitive decline.

The objective of this study was to examine whether the effects of age-related neuropathologies on cognition change over time. Participants were 1096 deceased persons from two clinical-pathologic studies. All were without dementia at baseline, completed a detailed battery of cognitive tests annually over up to 21 years, died, and underwent detailed neuropathologic examinations to identify Alzheimer's disease pathology, vascular pathologies (i.e. macro- and microscopic infarcts, atherosclerosis, arteriolar sclerosis, and cerebral amyloid angiopathy), Lewy bodies, transactive response DNA-binding

Can aerobic exercise really improve factors related to decision-making capacity in aging? What has been measured, what has been assumed, and what needs to change.

As populations age globally, cognitive decline has become one of the most pressing health challenges of our century. Early cognitive decline … hronic interventions (6 months to 2 years) improve EF closely related to decision-making, including cognitive flexibility, task switching, and attentional control. These behavioral gains correlate with neural adaptations in the PFC, including improved cerebral oxygenation and preserved white matter microstructure when exercise is sustained over time. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 100 patients with KS and 100 matched healthy controls. All participants underwent brain MRI and neuropsychological assessment targeting global cognition (Montreal-Cognitive-Assessment, MoCA), executive function (Stroop-Color-and-Word-Test, SCWT), cognitive flexibility (Trail-Making-Test), and working memory (Digit-Span-Test, DST; Visual-Reproduction, VR). Case Report: Sustained Cognitive Improvement and Reversible Brain Hypoperfusion in the Context of Posterior Fossa Arachnoid Cyst Shunting Procedure in KBG Syndrome.

KBG syndrome is a genetic syndrome characterized by developmental delay, mild autism spectrum disorder (ASD), variable cognitive disorders and distinctive craniofacial and skeletal features. Posterior fossa arachnoid cysts (PFACs) have been reported in this condition as in other syndromic forms of ASD, but their impact remains uncertain. Here, we report a ten-year follow-up of a patient with KBG syndrome and PFAC shunted for progressive cyst enlargement and his clinical symptoms, who showed important cognitive and behavior improvement post-drainage. A Flexible Clinician-Friendly Interface for Upper Limb Rehabilitation with Industrial Robots.

This paper presents a flexible software with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) designed to assist clinicians in upper limb robotic rehabilitation sessions. The flexibility comes from the fact that, since it relies on the Robot Operating System 2 (ROS2) framework, it is potentially compatible with any collaborative industrial robot, with relatively low integration effort. The software collects and analyzes data related to each session to identify critical movement directions for each patient, detecting improvements or regressions through statistical tests, thus reducing subjectivity. Moreover, i
