Previous studies have noted the abundance of collagen in human erectile tissues and the association of altered collagen content with erectile dysfunction. We investigated these notions by studying the collagen characteristics of biopsies from the corpus cavernosum of men who required surgical correction of their sexual dysfunction. A significant increase in collagen content in breast benign dysplasia has been noted in comparison with normal breasts. Type I and type III collagens were isolated from the normal breast. These types constitute 70% and 25% of the total collagen contents in breast, respectively. It was found, that the major part of tumor collagen is present in the form of type I and type III collagens stable complex. This complex does not dissociate under conditions used for collagen isolation. Normal female breast does not contain such a complex.

In order to determine whether collagen autoantibodies are present in sera from patients with vascular diseases, a highly sensitive solid-phase radioimmunoassay was utilized to evaluate the presence of antibodies against collagen types I to VI and laminin in sera of 20 patients with vasculitis and 20 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Ten patients with necrobiosis lipoidica lesions were studied. Five patients had diabetes mellitus. Collagenous colitis is a clinicopathologic syndrome with chronic watery diarrhea, diffuse colitis with surface epithelial injury, and a distinctive collagen band beneath the surface epithelium especially in the proximal colon.
