A decision support tool with health economic modelling for better management of DVT patients.

BackgroundResponding to the increasing demand for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) treatment in the United Kingdom (UK) at times of limited budgets and resources is a great challenge for decision-makers. Therefore, there is a need to find innovative policies, which improve operational efficiency and achieve the best value for money for patients. This study aims to develop a Decision Support Tool (DST) that assesses the impact of implementing new DVT patients' management and care policies aiming at improving efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing value for money.MethodsWith the involvement of stak

From Displacement to Service: A Pharmacist's Reflections on Medication Education in Rural Northern Iraq.

Global displacement disrupts continuity of care and access to essential medicines, creating medication-related challenges in fragile health systems. In October 2024, I returned to Northern Iraq to provide medication education sessions across 7 rural villages serving internally displaced Assyrian communities and individuals with limited access to consistent pharmacy services. This commentary reflects on that experience and considers what it revealed about medication use in displacement-affected communities and the preparation of future pharmacists. The outreach demonstrated the importance of cu

Integrating familiar listeners and speech recognition technologies into augmentative and alternative communication intervention for adults with down syndrome: Descriptive exploration.

Many individuals with Down syndrome exhibit speech impairments that necessitate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) intervention. AAC intervention allows for access to communication through means other than, or supplemental to, speech. This descriptive study provided initial insight into the feasibility of incorporating familiar listeners (e.g., family members) and speech recognition technology into AAC intervention to increase communication success for individuals with Down syndrome. Six adults with Down syndrome participated. The participants' intelligibility to a familiar liste

The National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service: 50 years of service to the nation.

The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Cancer Information Service (CIS) was founded in 1975 in accordance with a Congressional mandate requiring NCI to provide accurate, timely, and reliable cancer information to the American public as part of the National Cancer Act. For 50 years, the CIS has provided cancer patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and the public with high-quality information and resources on topics across the cancer control continuum, cancer clinical trials, and tobacco use cessation. Innovate and empower: the malate dehydrogenase course-based undergraduate research experiences and community of practice.

College science programs exhibit high rates of student attrition, especially among Students of Color, women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and those with disabilities. Many of the reasons students choose to leave or feel pushed out of science can be mitigated through participation in faculty-mentored research. However, faculty resources are limited, and not every student has access to faculty mentoring due to systemic or structural barriers. By bringing authentic scientific research into the classroom context, course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) expand the number of stud

Client Outcomes From a Multilevel Intervention to Support Persons Living With HIV and Returning to the Community After Incarceration in Puerto Rico.

The twin epidemics of HIV and incarceration impact Puerto Rico, which has limited resources to address the social and structural determinants of health in incarcerated populations. A Special Programs of National Significance grant supported a Puerto Rican community-based organization to implement the evidence-informed Transitional Care Coordination intervention among incarcerated persons living with HIV, targeting changes at the individual, organization, and systems levels. After implementation (November 2015-July 2018; n = 69), 93.1% of eligible clients were linked to community-based HIV care

Uncovering diversity and metabolic spectrum of animals in dead zone sediments.

Ocean deoxygenation driven by global warming and eutrophication is a primary concern for marine life. Resistant animals may be present in dead zone sediments, however there is lack of information on their diversity and metabolism. Here we combined geochemistry, microscopy, and RNA-seq for estimating taxonomy and functionality of micrometazoans along an oxygen gradient in the largest dead zone in the world. Nematodes are metabolically active at oxygen concentrations below 1.8 µmol L-1, and their diversity and community structure are different between low oxygen areas. This is likely due to toxi

Ebola virus disease in Africa: epidemiology and nosocomial transmission.

The 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, primarily affecting Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, has exceeded all previous Ebola outbreaks in the number of cases and in international response. There have been 20 significant outbreaks of Ebola virus disease in Sub-Saharan Africa prior to the 2014 outbreak, the largest being that in Uganda in 2000, with 425 cases and a mortality of 53%. Since the first outbreaks in Sudan and Zaire in 1976, transmission within health facilities has been of major concern, affecting healthcare workers and acting as amplifiers of spread into the community. The lack of

Management of physical health in patients with schizophrenia: international insights.

This international meeting discussed the management of physical health in patients with schizophrenia in several countries including France, Spain, Germany, the UK and Italy. Physical health parameters, including weight, blood pressure, blood glucose, lipids and standard biochemical assessments are measured in many patients at the first hospital consultation. These reveal physical disorders such as obesity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, the metabolic syndrome, substance abuse, cardiovascular disease, extrapyramidal symptoms, sexual dysfunction and diabetes in substantial proportions of patients

A proposal to prevent severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and kernicterus.

To address systems failures and promote a safer management of newborn jaundice, we propose an 'aviation safety standard' for newborn health-care services during the first week after birth. Systems failure in newborn jaundice management has been characterized by lapses in concern, loss of continuity, and delays in care by multiple providers at multiple sites. Components for a six-step national strategy to prevent severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and possibly kernicterus are being implemented as delineated in the 2004 AAP guidelines. The clinical guidelines for safer and evidence-based practic

'New bottle, but old wine': from family planning to HIV/AIDS in post-Doi Moi Vietnam.

This paper begins with an observation that during the past two decades HIV/AIDS has emerged as a new public health priority in Vietnam and has commanded increasing attention and resources from both the government and the donor community. By juxtaposing HIV/AIDS with family planning, another social and health priority that preceded, and overlapped with, HIV/AIDS for a large part of the 1990s, we show two major gaps that have undermined both programmes. One is the lack of a strong civil society, that could have served as advocates for change, especially outside the government and the donor commu

An ecological analysis of sociodemographic factors associated with the incidence of salmonellosis, shigellosis, and E. coli O157:H7 infections in US counties.

Identifying county-level sociodemographic and economic factors associated with the incidence of enteric disease may provide new insights concerning the dynamics of community transmission of these diseases as well as opportunities for prevention. We used data from the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the Health Resources and Services Administration to conduct an ecological analysis of 26 sociodemographic and economic factors associated with the incidence of salmonellosis, shigellosis, and E. coli O157:H7 infections in US counties for the period 1993

Community Care in Action: Scaling Doula Support Through a Health Department-Community Partnership.

INTRODUCTION: Doula support is increasingly recognized as a promising strategy to address racial inequities in maternal health. The New York City Health Department launched the Citywide Doula Initiative (CDI) in March 2022 to expand access to free, community-based doula support in disinvested neighborhoods. METHODS: To evaluate the program's first year of implementation, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 44 clients, doulas, doula-organization staff, and Health Department staff between November 2022 and April 2023. We coded interview notes using template analysis (a thematic analysi
