COVID-19, obsessive-compulsive disorder and invisible life forms that threaten the self.

This communication explores unique characteristics of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in the context of the current coronavirus pandemic. When do irrational fears of contamination as seen in OCD start to diverge from rational fears and behaviors? The current paper argues that the personal meaning attributed to viruses and germs, including their personification as entities that possess human-like characteristics, allows them to threaten and violate an individual's identity. Specifically, it suggests that fears of contamination become obsessional when the threat of viruses and germs becomes

Risk of self-harm in first-diagnosed mental disorders: A 16-year territory-wide health-record database study in Hong Kong.

Mental disorders (MDs) are established risk factors for self-harm, yet disorder-, age-, and sex-specific risk estimates in population-representative samples are rarely studied. We conducted a territory-wide, population-based cohort study using Hong-Kong medical record database covering public hospitals, specialist and general outpatient clinics, identifying 322,922 people with a first-recorded diagnosis of any MDs and 888,031 primary-care controls without MDs (proxy general population) between 1-January-2006 and 31-December-2021. Outcomes were incident self-harm events. Cox proportional-hazard

Using large language models for extracting and pre-annotating texts on mental health from noisy data in a low-resource language.

Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) have opened new possibilities for developing conversational agents (CAs) in various subfields of mental healthcare. However, this progress is hindered by limited access to high-quality training data, often due to privacy concerns and high annotation costs for low-resource languages. A potential solution is to create human-AI annotation systems that utilize extensive public domain user-to-user and user-to-professional discussions on social media. These discussions, however, are extremely noisy, necessitating the adaptation of LLMs for fully au

[Suicide due to mental diseases based on the Vital Statistics Survey Death Form].

OBJECTIVES: Mental diseases such as schizophrenia and depression put patients at risk for suicide. It is extremely important to understand that one way of preventing suicide is to determine the actual mental state of the individual. The purpose of this study was to analyze the true mental state of suicide victims reported in the vital statistics. METHODS: This study investigated the vital statistics of 30,299 suicide victims in Japan in 2008. The use of these basic statistics for non-statistical purposes was approved by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. The method involved

Vaginal orgasm is associated with less use of immature psychological defense mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION: Freud implied a link between inability to have a vaginal orgasm and psychosexual immaturity. Since Kinsey, many sexologists have asserted that no such link exists. However, empirical testing of the issue has been lacking. AIM: The objective was to determine the relationship between different sexual behavior triggers of female orgasm and use of immature psychological defense mechanisms. METHODS: Women reported their past month frequency of different sexual behaviors and corresponding orgasm rates and completed the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ-40). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The

Phantom bite revisited.

The term 'phantom bite' is used to describe an uncommon condition in which patients are preoccupied with their dental occlusion, believing that it is abnormal. The condition is remarkable for the nature of the involved explanations and interpretations that the patients give and for their persistence in trying to find a solution to what appears to be a relatively minor problem. Three clinical cases that illustrate the nature of this condition are presented and problems associated with the management of affected patients are discussed. Phantom bite can be a disabling disorder which is difficult

Bipolar comorbidity: from diagnostic dilemmas to therapeutic challenge.

Comorbidity in bipolar disorder is the rule rather than the exception more than 60% of bipolar patients have a comorbid diagnosis and is associated with a mixed affective or dysphoric state; high rates of suicidality; less favourable response to lithium and poorer overall outcome. There is convincing evidence that rates of substance use and anxiety disorders are higher among patients with bipolar disorder compared to their rates in the general population. The interaction between anxiety disorders and substance use goes both ways: patients with bipolar disorder have a higher rate of substance u

Dissociative experiences in obsessive-compulsive disorder and trichotillomania: clinical and genetic findings.

A link between dissociation proneness in adulthood and self-reports of childhood traumatic events (including familial loss in childhood, sexual/physical abuse and neglect) has been documented. Several studies have also provided evidence for an association between dissociative experiences and trauma in patients with various psychiatric disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder, borderline personality, dissociative identity and eating disorders. Based on the relative paucity of data on dissociation and trauma in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and trichotillomania (TTM), the primar

Manipulating visual perspective for obsessional imagery and its impact on obsessive-compulsive symptoms in an analogue sample.

Visual perspective may have an important role in the phenomenology of intrusive images relevant to psychological disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The aim of the current study was to examine the subjective and behavioural effects of manipulating visual perspective, to either field or observer, on intrusive images related to doubting and contamination concerns. One hundred and twelve undergraduate participants with high levels OCD symptoms were asked to identify and imagine an intrusive image related to either doubting or contamination concerns. We then randomly assigned th

Screening for Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Using the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Child Version.

The study assessed the ability of the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Child Version (OCI-CV) to detect pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) using receiver operating characteristic analyses. The sample consisted of 114 cases with current OCD, 340 cases with other psychiatric disorders (OPD), and 301 healthy controls (HC) ages 7 to 18 years. All 755 participants were assessed with two semi-structured interviews and seven rating scales. In a comparison of current OCD cases and all other participants, the optimal OCI-CV cut-score was 11 with an area under the curve (AUC) of .88. In a compa

The Gambling Symptom Assessment Scale (G-SAS): a reliability and validity study.

Two hundred seven patients with DSM-IV Pathological Gambling Disorder completed both the Gambling Symptom Assessment Scale (G-SAS) and the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale--modified for Pathological Gambling (PG-YBOCS) at baseline visit and weekly or biweekly thereafter during the 12-week study period. The week 1 to week 2 visit data were used to assess test-retest reliability. Weekly or biweekly data were used for the G-SAS validity. The PG-YBOCS reliability and validity data have been published previously. We used the PG-YBOCS as the established scale and compared the G-SAS performance

[Obsessive compulsive disorders].

Obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD) are a nosographic entity. Their biological rating in serotonergic pathways and the efficacy of serotonergic antidepressants allows for developing a clinical and biological models of OCD. J. Guyotat, one of the first in 1959 to observe the favorable effects of antidepressants on OCD, presents their history. Epidemiological surveys conducted since 1980 have shown that the prevalence of OCD was underestimated until then. The prevalence is 2 to 3% in the adult population, with more women affected. The disorder develops early in childhood and adolescence. Loss o

Effects of four treatment methods on social phobic patients not suitable for insight-oriented psychotherapy.

Forty-two social phobic men and women, rated unsuitable for insight-oriented psychotherapy, received one of four randomly assigned types of treatment for 3 months. All patients received basal therapy (B) in the form of standardized information, self-exposure instructions, and anxiolytic medication. One group received this treatment only, with monthly appointments. The others, in addition, received either therapist-directed prolonged exposure in vivo, in some cases supplemented with exposure in imagination (PE), dynamically oriented supportive therapy (ST) or relaxation therapy (R). Eating disorders through the periodontal lens.

People with eating disorders suffer from a mental disorder that negatively affects their physical and/or mental health. The three most frequent eating disorders are binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia nervosa. Environmental and genetic factors are involved in the pathogenesis of eating disorders in vulnerable persons. Although treatment varies among different types of eating disorders, nutrition, medical care combined with psychotherapy and medications are standard of care. The aim of this review is to give an overview of the oral health impact of eating disorders with a speci

Teaching Psychopathology in a Galaxy Far, Far Away: The Light Side of the Force.

Star Wars films are among the top box office hits of all time. The films have been popular internationally for almost 40 years. As such, both trainees and attending psychiatrists are likely to be aware of them. This article highlights a vast array of psychopathology in Star Wars films which can be useful in teaching, even when the characters are considered the "good guys". Included are as follows: histrionic, obsessive-compulsive, and dependent personality traits, perinatal psychiatric disorders, prodromal schizophrenia, pseudo-dementia, frontal lobe lesions, pathological gambling, and even ma

Personality Disorders in Primary Care: Impact on Depression Outcomes Within Collaborative Care.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with personality disorders (PDs) are high utilizers of primary care and mental health services; however, they struggle to utilize the care effectively and studies have shown a strong association between having a PD and higher impairment in social role functioning. This is especially important because PDs are highly comorbid with a wide range of other mental health disorders. The collaborative care model (CCM) for depression was developed with an emphasis on patient engagement and aimed to reduce health care utilization, while improving treatment outcomes in primary care

Depressive Symptom Severity in Individuals With Epilepsy and Recent Health Complications.

Identifying relationships between depression severity and clinical factors may help with appropriate recognition and management of neuropsychiatric conditions in persons with epilepsy (PWE). Demographic characteristics, epilepsy variables, and medical and psychiatric comorbidities were examined from a baseline randomized controlled trial sample of 120 PWE. Among demographic characteristics, only inability to work was significantly associated with depression severity (p = 0.05). Higher 30-day seizure frequency (p < 0.01) and lower quality of life (p < 0.0001) were associated with greater depres
