Effect of ultrasound therapy for orthodontic pain control: A pilot randomized clinical trial.

Orthodontic pain has emerged to be the most common side effect to be reported in the course of fixed appliance therapy, with prevalence of more than 70 per cent of patients and may undermine the adherence to treatment. Therefore, it is of interest to controlled pilot trial that tested the analgesic effect of therapeutic ultrasound on pain management in the first stage of alignment. Seven orthodontic patients (15-25 years old) with Class I malocclusion were randomly assigned to the ultrasound (1 MHz, 0.5 W/cm2, pulsed mode) or sham treatment during 10 minutes on the second day after the placeme

Dynamic changes in total hemoglobin concentration in the frontal region during motion-based video gameplay in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy: a pilot study using portable near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).

OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study aimed to investigate the changes in frontal hemoglobin concentration during motion-based video gaming in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and to provide preliminary findings regarding the immediate effects of video gaming on cognitive function in this population. We measured changes in total hemoglobin concentration in the left and right frontal regions during rest and gaming using portable near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The Stroop test was administered before and after the intervention as a measure of selective attention, which is a compone

COVID-19 Prophylactic Effect of Bromhexine Hydrochloride.

INTRODUCTION: Despite extensive efforts to identify effective treatments for COVID-19, preventive strategies remain essential. Bromhexine hydrochloride (BRH), an over-the-counter mucolytic with potential TMPRSS2 inhibition, may reduce viral entry and thus serve as a prophylactic agent. METHODS: A retrospective questionnaire-based study included 125 individuals reporting prophylactic BRH use. Demographic and clinical data were collected. COVID-19 infection rates before and after BRH use were compared. Subgroup analyses were performed by vaccination status, prior infection, and duration of prop

Brazil's Missing Infants: Zika Risk Changes Reproductive Behavior.

Zika virus epidemics have potential large-scale population effects. Controlled studies of mice and nonhuman primates indicate that Zika affects fecundity, raising concerns about miscarriage in human populations. In regions of Brazil, Zika risk peaked months before residents learned about the epidemic and its relation to congenital anomalies. This spatiotemporal variation supports analysis of both biological effects of Zika infection on fertility and the effects of learning about Zika risk on reproductive behavior. Causal inference techniques used with vital statistics indicate that the epidemi

Evaluation of the impact of implementing the emergency medical services traumatic brain injury guidelines in Arizona: the Excellence in Prehospital Injury Care (EPIC) study methodology.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) exacts a great toll on society. Fortunately, there is growing evidence that the management of TBI in the early minutes after injury may significantly reduce morbidity and mortality. In response, evidence-based prehospital and in-hospital TBI treatment guidelines have been established by authoritative bodies. However, no large studies have yet evaluated the effectiveness of implementing these guidelines in the prehospital setting. This article describes the background, design, implementation, emergency medical services (EMS) treatment protocols, and statistical anal

Glucocorticoids enhance extinction-based psychotherapy.

Behavioral exposure therapy of anxiety disorders is believed to rely on fear extinction. Because preclinical studies have shown that glucocorticoids can promote extinction processes, we aimed at investigating whether the administration of these hormones might be useful in enhancing exposure therapy. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 40 patients with specific phobia for heights were treated with three sessions of exposure therapy using virtual reality exposure to heights. Cortisol (20 mg) or placebo was administered orally 1 h before each of the treatment sessions. Subjec

The sequential combination of cognitive behavioral treatment and well-being therapy in cyclothymic disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of controlled studies of psychological treatment of cyclothymic disorder. The aim of this investigation was to examine the benefits of the sequential combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and well-being therapy (WBT) compared to clinical management (CM) in DSM-IV cyclothymic disorder. METHODS: Sixty-two patients with DSM-IV cyclothymic disorder were randomly assigned to CBT/WBT (n = 31) or CM (n = 31). Both CBT/WBT and CM consisted of ten 45-min sessions every other week. An independent blind evaluator assessed the patients before treatment, after thera

Using leptospermum honey to manage wounds impaired by radiotherapy: a case series.

Radiation-induced tissue injury and wounds with radiation-impaired healing are traumatic for patients and challenging for their caregivers. Standardized management approaches do not exist. The effect of Leptospermum honey as a primary dressing for managing these wounds was assessed in four patients (age range 63 to 93 years) who had previously undergone radiotherapy that left them with fragile friable areas of damaged skin that did not respond to conventional treatment. Compromised areas involved the neck, cheek, groin/perineum, and chest. In patients 1 and 2, after topical application of hone

Early statin therapy in acute coronary syndromes.

Patients who survive an acute coronary syndrome of unstable angina or myocardial infarction are at much higher risk of a recurrent event within the following year than patients with stable coronary syndromes. Statin therapy is justified for many of these patients, not only for long-term benefit but also to reduce the risk of recurrent events within weeks of the primary event. The mechanisms that underlie this benefit are probably related to improvements in endothelial function, a decrease in vascular inflammation, and reduced prothrombotic factors. The effects of statins may be mediated by cho

Translocation of intrauterine-infused bacterial lipopolysaccharides to the mammary gland in dexamethasone-treated goats.

Our previous study showed that intrauterine-infused lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can be translocated to the mammary gland to induce weak inflammation. This study aimed to determine whether dexamethasone treatment facilitated the translocation of LPS from the uterus to the mammary gland to induce a heavy inflammatory response. Sixteen goats were divided into control and LPS groups, subjected to daily dexamethasone administration before saline or LPS infusion. Milk and blood samples were collected before and after LPS infusion to determine the milk yield and somatic cell count (SCC) and blood leucoc

The effect of switch therapy to tenofovir versus entecavir maintenance on recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma after surgery (SWITE): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Antiviral therapy has been reported to be associated with lower recurrence rate of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) for patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. While entecavir (ETV) and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) were both recommended as first-line therapies for HBV patients, recent retrospective studies proposed a lower incidence rate of HCC occurrence or recurrence in those receiving TDF compared ETV. However, the survival benefits of switching to TDF therapy after prolonged ETV treatment before surgery remain uncertain. We delineate the rationale and design of SW
