Cerebro-Oculo-Nasal syndrome; a new multiple congenital anomaly/mental retardation syndrome was first reported by Richieri-Costa and Guion-Almeida in 1993 (Am J Med Genet 47:702-706) in two patients. To the best of our knowledge four additional cases have been reported. The main features of the syndrome are anophthalmia/microphthalmia, abnormal nares, and central nervous system anomalies. In this report, an additional sporadic case of this syndrome is presented. A 6-year-old girl from a non-consanguineous couple with normal prenatal growth parameters and retarded postnatal growth had anophthal

We report on the first known Bedouin family with Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome (MIM 175700). The index patient and his father shared pre- and postaxial polysyndactyly, mild mental retardation, and corpus callosum dysgenesis. Their phenotypic findings were compared with reported cases of both Greig cephalopolysyndactyly (GCPS) and acrocallosal syndromes. This family represents the second report of the rare occurrence of dysgenesis of the corpus callosum in GCPS.

A number of craniosynostotic disorders have recently been ascribed to mutations in genes coding for the fibroblast growth factor receptors(FGFRs). The common feature of these FGFR-associated conditions is the unilateral or bilateral premature ossification of the coronal suture. One distinct craniosynostotic condition is trigonocephaly, which results from the premature fusion of the metopic suture. Trigonocephaly mostly occurs as isolated cranial defect; however, the premature closure of the metopic suture may represent a feature of more complex craniosynostotic conditions in which a progressiv

Haploinsufficiency of SF3B2 is associated with craniofacial microsomia, characterized by mandibular hypoplasia and microtia, often with preauricular tags or pits, epibulbar dermoids, and cleft palate. In addition, extracraniofacial anomalies may be present, such as skeletal, cardiac renal, and abnormalities of the central nervous system. Variants have been either de novo or inherited, and both inter- and intrafamilial variability has been observed. Here we describe a patient referred for exome sequencing for a complex congenital heart defect and Hirschsprung disease found by exome sequencing t

Cardiofaciocutaneous (CFC) syndrome [Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) #115150] is characterized by craniofacial dysmorphism, heart malformation, ectodermal abnormalities, neuromotor delay and intellectual disability. It is not a frequent disease, about 300 cases have been reported in the medical literature. We describe the case of a 34-year-old patient presenting with CFC syndrome phenotype, monitored since the age of 1 1∕2 years. Clinical findings included craniofacial dysmorphism, development delay, heart malformation and severe intellectual disability. The evolution was with progr

Atrazine is a commonly used herbicide that has previously been implicated as an endocrine-disrupting compound. Previous studies have shown that estrogenic endocrine-disrupting compounds affect the development of the heart, cartilage, and bone in zebrafish ( Danio rerio). To determine whether atrazine has effects similar to other endocrine disruptors, zebrafish embryos were treated with a range of atrazine concentrations. Atrazine treatment at a low concentration of 0.1 µM resulted in significant differences in craniofacial cartilage elements, while concentrations ≥1 µM led to decreased surviva

OBJECTIVE: To identify aspects of psychosocial adjustment related to the self-perceived facial appearance of preadolescents with craniofacial abnormalities.
DESIGN: Concurrent relationships were evaluated using a within-group correlational design.
PARTICIPANTS: Participants were 24 patients, aged 11 to 13, of a major craniofacial center and their parents who were contacted by telephone and agreed to participate.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Self-report and parent-report questionnaires assessing psychosocial adjustment.
RESULTS: Self-perceived facial appearance was positively correlated with glob…

We describe a 20-week-old fetus with multiple congenital anomalies exposed to acitretin in the first trimester of pregnancy. Acitretin and its ethylester etretinate are both vitamin A congeners; drugs of this group are well-known teratogenic agents. Since the marketing of acitretin only one report on human teratogenicity associated with acitretin has been published. The present male fetus showed severe symmetric anomalies of upper and lower limbs, craniofacial anomalies, ear anomalies, and an atrioventricular septal defect (ASD). Although the craniofacial anomalies resemble the abnormalities d

Animals that colonize dark and nutrient-poor subterranean environments evolve numerous extreme phenotypes. These include dramatic changes to the craniofacial complex, many of which are under genetic control. These phenotypes can demonstrate asymmetric genetic signals wherein a QTL is detected on one side of the face but not the other. The causative gene(s) underlying QTL are difficult to identify with limited genomic resources. We approached this task by searching for candidate genes mediating fragmentation of the third suborbital bone (SO3) directly inferior to the orbit of the eye. We integr

INTRODUCTION: Dysmorphic syndromes are characterised by congenital anomalies affecting craniofacial features, body proportions, and organ structure. They are frequently caused by complex genetic alterations, including deletions, duplications, and microdeletions, which impede optimal growth regulation.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The objective of this paper is to present a synopsis of selected dysmorphic syndromes associated with excessive growth, with particular emphasis on syndromes with confirmed or strongly suspected chromosomal aetiology or associated with DNA methylation disorders (epigenetic diso

BACKGROUND: Cranial deformities in children under 2 can lead to functional and cosmetic issues, with their frequency increasing due to sleep positioning practices. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of custom-made corrective helmets in treating these deformities.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 30 children under 2 in Astana, Kazakhstan, using 3D scanning to create custom corrective helmets worn for 23 hours a day over 5 months.
RESULTS: The results showed a significant improvement in the shape and symmetry of the skull after therapy. The asymmetry between the left and ri

IMPORTANCE: Diprosopus is an exceedingly rare craniomaxillofacial dysmorphosis that is considered a subgroup of conjoined twins. This phenotype encompasses a broad spectrum of duplications ranging from partial structures to complete dicephalus. The embryogenesis and mechanism of disease are not well understood. The objective of this investigation was to describe a case of partial dentofacial duplication and to discuss the possible etiology with novel genetic insights thereof.
OBSERVATIONS: A newborn Kazakh boy was referred to the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University becaus

Rare facial clefts are deformities involving the discontinuity of bones and soft tissues in areas of the face and skull not typically affected by common oral clefts. They can be isolated defects or associated with syndromes. The exact cause of these clefts is not well understood because of their rarity and the complexity of craniofacial embryological development. Tessier descriptive classification system is widely used by surgeons and relates specific anatomical defects to the necessary reconstructive surgery. This system uses the orbit as a primary reference point and numbers clefts from 0 to
