Surgical treatment of an intracranial epidermoid cyst in a dog.

OBJECTIVE: To report challenges and complications associated with surgical intracranial epidermoid cyst removal from the fourth ventricle of a dog. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical report. ANIMAL: Labrador retriever (7 years old) with focal seizures. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an oval lesion in the fourth ventricle. This lesion was heterogeneously hyperintense on T2-weighted and fluid attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) images and hypointense on T1-weighted images. Dilatation of the ventricular system was present. A ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) was placed and the fourth

Intramural hydatid cyst of descending aorta complicated by false aneurysm.

Hydatid disease is caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus, and the resultant fluid-filled cysts almost invariably affect the liver. Primary involvement of the aortic wall is very rare. We report a case of hydatid disease presenting as a huge cyst invading the wall of the descending aorta and complicated by a false aneurysm. Diagnostic problems and operative management are reviewed.

Aneurysmal bone cyst.

Key findings that aid in the diagnosis of an aneurysmal bone cyst are: 1) typically the patients are young individuals less than 20 years old; 2) an expansile bone lesion is bordered by a thin, low signal intensity rim mass; 3) the lesion is inhomogenously increased in signal on T2-weighted images; and 4) multiple fluid-fluid levels are seen with the mass on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans.

[Peritoneal pseudocysts: complications of ventriculo-peritoneal shunts. Apropos of 3 cases].

From 1975 to 1995, 335 patients were operated for hydrocephalus in neurosurgical clinic of CHU Fann, and got ventriculo-peritoneal shunt. 3 cases of patients presenting an uncommon complication of ventriculo-peritoneal shunt: abdominal pseudo cyst, are reported and discussed. The digestive symptoms are the first to manifest themselves for a period of time, then confusing with other forms of abdominal cysts. The suggested treatment is to remove the shunt from the peritoneal cavity and perform a ventriculo-atrial shunt, then to proceed to a laparotomy, drain the fluid and resect the cyst wall. T

Computerized axial tomography for the diagnosis of cerebral cysticercosis.

Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) has proved extremely useful for the diagnosis of cerebral cysticercosis. The calcified small, multiple, and scattered cysts provide a typical image on CAT. The collection of non-calcified cysts in the subarachnoid spaces (racemose form) or in the ventricles may produce areas of low density similar to that of the cerebrospinal fluid. The dilatation of the ventricular system, extreme degrees of hydrocephalus, areas of cerebral atrophy, and other related changes induced by the cysts in the subarachnoid spaces are also clearly shown in the CAT. Four personal cas

Acute peritonitis secondary to spontaneous rupture of hepatic hydatid cyst: A case report and literature review.

Spontaneous intraperitoneal rupture of hepatic hydatid cysts is a rare but serious complication that can lead to significant morbidity and mortality due to risks such as anaphylactic shock and secondary peritoneal hydatidosis. This report presents the case of a 59-year-old male farmer from a rural area of Tunisia who presented with severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Diagnostic imaging revealed a large hepatic cyst with free peritoneal fluid, indicating a ruptured hydatid cyst. Emergency surgery involved cyst evacuation, peritoneal lavage, and drainage. Postoperatively, the patient de

Transcriptomic analysis of subarachnoid cysts of Taenia solium reveals mechanisms for uncontrolled proliferation and adaptations to the microenvironment.

Subarachnoid neurocysticercosis (SANCC) is caused by an abnormally transformed form of the metacestode or larval form of the tapeworm Taenia solium. In contrast to vesicular parenchymal and ventricular located cysts that contain a viable scolex and are anlage of the adult tapeworm, the subarachnoid cyst proliferates to form aberrant membranous cystic masses within the subarachnoid spaces that cause mass effects and acute and chronic arachnoiditis. How subarachnoid cyst proliferates and interacts with the human host is poorly understood, but parasite stem cells (germinative cells) likely partic

An Adolescent Girl with Acute-on-Chronic Abdominal Pain.

We present an 11-year-old pediatric patient with acute-on-chronic abdominal pain found to have a large intra-abdominal abscess with a concomitant dermoid cyst. Acute-on-chronic abdominal pain has one of the broadest and, in our case, ever-changing differential diagnoses. Exploratory laparoscopy revealed a severe pelvic inflammatory process with a large abscess and extensive omental and bowel adhesions, a left ovarian cyst, a shortened appendix with thickened tip, and purulent fluid in the cul-de-sac. These findings suggested a ruptured appendix leading to a large abscess with adjacent ovarian

[Ultrasound-guided anhydrous ethanol and microwave ablation for functional parathyroid cyst: a case report].

We report a case of functional parathyroid cyst treated by ultrasound-guided anhydrous ethanol sclerotherapy and microwave ablation. The 63-year-old female patient was diagnosed to have functional parathyroid cyst with hypercalcemia, high PTH and cystic space-occupying lesions in the neck by ultrasound, radionuclide scanning and PTH measurement of the cystic fluid. The patient refused to receive cyst resection, and anhydrous ethanol sclerotherapy with microwave ablation was performed under ultrasound guidance. The procedure was completed smoothly without any complications either during or afte

Diagnosis and treatment of noncommunicating extradural spinal thoracolumbar arachnoid cyst.

BACKGROUND: Noncommunicating extradural spinal arachnoid cysts are extremely rare. They are believed to arise from congenital defects in the dura mater and become enlarged as a consequence of increased cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) pressure within the subarachnoid space. Most retain a communicating pedicle through which the extradural cyst maintains connection with the subarachnoid space, and only rarely does this communication become sealed. The optimal treatment consists of complete surgical removal of the cyst with ligation of the communicating pedicle. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 29-year-old male pr

Generalised purulent peritonitis and small bowel obstruction due to a spontaneously perforated ovarian dermoid cyst.

We outline the narrative of a 28-year-old woman who initially presented to the emergency department with vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and fever. Blood tests revealed significantly raised inflammatory markers and acute renal failure. Initially, this was attributed to gastroenteritis due to a recent foreign travel, but further investigations and radiological imaging revealed a large right ovarian dermoid cyst with a significant amount of free intra-abdominal fluid and small bowel dilation. She underwent laparotomy, which revealed a spontaneously perforated right ovarian dermoid cyst resul

Supratentorial arachnoid cyst management by cystoperitoneal shunt in a 1-year-old European cat.

Arachnoid cysts are defined as an accumulation of fluid within the arachnoid membrane. Feline intracranial arachnoid cysts are seldom reported, with only three cases in the veterinary literature. A 1-year-old male neutered European cat with a 24 h history of seizures was presented to the small animal neurology department at Vetagro Sup, Lyon. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a large intracranial arachnoid cyst ventral to the brain in the left temporal area. Cystoperitoneal shunt placement resulted in complete resolution of the cyst without recurrence (follow-up MRIs 3 weeks and 21 mon

Symptomatic cervical perineural (Tarlov) cyst: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Perineural (Tarlov) cysts are benign, usually asymptomatic, cerebrospinal fluid filled cysts of the spine, most often found in the sacral region. DESCRIPTION OF CASE: We report a Tarlov cyst, located in the cervical spine, in a 44-year-old woman who presented with a 3-week history of radicular symptoms of the right C6 root. The perineural cyst was identified at the C5-C6 level following magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine. A conservative approach was chosen, with the use of a soft cervical collar for two weeks, a 15-day-course of oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory m

Canine dacryolithiasis: a case description and mineral analysis.

A 4-year-old, female, spayed, Labrador retriever was presented with a painless swelling of the left ventromedial eyelid and epiphora of 3 months duration. Bilateral patency of the nasolacrimal system was confirmed by the appearance of fluorescein dye at both nares. Ultrasonography revealed a well-demarcated fluid-filled structure containing echogenic ill-defined material in close proximity to the nasolacrimal system. A transconjunctival surgical approach confirmed the close anatomical proximity of the cyst and the absence of a communication with the inferior canaliculus. The cyst contained mul

[Management of arachnoid cysts of the middle cranial fossa accompanied by subdural effusions].

Subdural effusions are uncommon but known complications of arachnoid cysts of the middle cranial fossa. They mainly occur after minor head traumas in young patients. Here, we report eight cases of arachnoid cyst of the middle cranial fossa associated with subdural hematoma in five cases and hygroma in three cases. Major symptoms are signs of raised intracranial pressure. CT scan and MRI showed the cyst and the subdural effusion. An excellent therapeutic result was achieved with evacuation of the subdural fluid via burr holes in the five cases of subdural hematoma while in the two cases of hygr

Detecting Baker's cyst: venous duplex scanning in ambulatory setting.

Popliteal cyst, also called Baker's cyst, is a popliteal fossa enlargement filled with synovial fluid. Baker's cysts can be symptomatic and cause considerable pathologies such as thrombophlebitis, compartment syndrome and even nerve entrapment. It is the most common nonvascular pathology seen in the popliteal fossa but clinically indistinguishable from deep vein thrombosis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate venous duplex scanning in detecting and distinguishing complicated Baker's cyst and deep vein thrombosis in outpatient setting. Medical records of all patients undergoing venous

Anterior abdominal wall hydatid cyst; an unusual presentation.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease is common in sheep rearing communities, often presenting with hepatic cysts in a majority of cases. Musculo-skel … icial swelling. Correct surgical management, including the intra-operative avoidance of spillage of cyst fluid demands pre-operative diagnosis or at least a high index of suspicion. Hydatid cyst should therefore be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of superficial swellings of musculo-skeletal origin in sheep rearing communities such as ours.

The isolated C-terminus of polycystin-1 promotes increased ATP-stimulated chloride secretion in a collecting duct cell line.

Cyst expansion in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) requires accumulation of fluid into the cyst lumen, which is probably driven by aberrant chloride secretion by the cyst lining epithelium. Extracellular ATP is a potent stimulus for chloride secretion in many epithelial systems, and provides a plausible mechanism for secretion in ADPKD. Therefore the link between polycystin-1 and ATP-stimulated chloride secretion was investigated in the M1 cortical collecting duct cell line. M1 cells were stably transfected with a glucocorticoid-inducible cytoplasmic C-terminal polycystin-1
