Use of central and peripheral temperature measurements in care of the critically ill child.

In the presence of constant ambient conditions, a fall in effective circulating blood volume causes peripheral vasoconstriction which is reflected in a fall in peripheral (great toe) temperature and thus in an increase in the central (rectal)/peripheral temperature gradient. We report 5 illustrative clinical situations showing the value of this technique in the medical care of critically ill children. We suggest that such measurements are useful, first in the recognition of dehydration and in assessing the response to treatment, secondly in managing shock, and finally, in differentiating dehyd…

Intravenous and Oral Fluid Therapy in Neonatal Calves With Diarrhea or Sepsis and in Adult Cattle.

Optimal fluid therapy protocols in neonatal calves and adult cattle are based on consideration of signalment, history, and physical examination findings, and individually tailored whenever laboratory analysis is available. Measurement of the magnitude of eye recession, duration of skin tenting in the lateral neck region, and urine specific gravity by refractometry provide the best estimates of hydration status in calves and cattle. Intravenous and oral electrolyte solutions (OES) are frequently administered to critically ill calves and adult cattle. Application of physicochemical principles in

Pediatric rapid fluid resuscitation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Intravenous and enteral fluid resuscitation are frequently used therapies in the management of pediatric patients in emergency departments and critical care settings. Any state of intravascular fluid deficit, ranging from mild dehydration due to gastroenteritis to fulminant septic shock, requires careful assessment and early restoration of hemodynamic stability. Rapid fluid resuscitation has gained increased recognition since the most recent pediatric shock management guidelines. We sought to review the evidence for rapid fluid resuscitation and to outline its clinical indic…

Transcriptomic changes in the jerboa supraoptic nucleus during osmotic stress: PCSK1 and PTPRN changes are conserved across desert and mesic species.

The supraoptic nucleus (SON) is a hypothalamic region essential for the orchestration of osmoregulation in mammals. We sought to understand how gene expression in the SON is orchestrated in a rodent species adapted for survival in arid desert conditions. After an acclimatisation period, we compared the male and female trancriptomes of the Lesser Egyptian jerboa (Jaculus jaculus) SON under euhydrated, dehydrated, and rehydrated conditions. Gene expression in the jerboa SON was remarkably stable across the conditions with only 46 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) after dehydration and 4 DEGs…

An in-situ DRIFTS study of acetone adsorption mechanism on TiO2 nanoparticles.

In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) has been used to investigate the adsorption and catalytic react … f adsorbed H2O on the surface of as received TiO2. Adsorbed water is not favorable for aldolization/dehydration reaction because it can block the active sites for mesityl oxide formation. Outcomes of the current study provide fundamental insight into acetone adsorption and catalytic reaction on TiO2 nanoparticles. Specifically, this investigation demonstrates …

Stimulus-related changes in the dendrites of magnocellular neurones.

A Golgi-Cox study was undertaken to determine whether enhanced electrical activity was associated with any morphological changes in the dend … antly increased (p less than 0.01) in Brattleboro rats but was decreased by sodium chloride-induced dehydration (p less than 0.01). Deoxycortone treatment reversed the reduction induced by dehydration. Hippocampal cells showed no significant differences. Thus, the cells of the magnocellular system rapidly alter their morphology when stimulated but the changes …

Water residing in small ultrastructural spaces plays a critical role in the mechanical behavior of bone.

Water may affect the mechanical behavior of bone by interacting with the mineral and organic phases through two major pathways: i.e. hydrogen bonding and polar interactions. In this study, dehydrated bone was soaked in several solvents (i.e. water, heavy water (D2O), ethylene glycol (EG), dimethylformamide (DMF), and carbon tetrachloride(CCl4)) that are chemically harmless to bone and different in polarity, hydrogen bonding capability and molecular size. The objective was to examine how replacing the original matrix water with the solvents would affect the mechanical behavior of bone. The mech

Hemodynamic and biochemical benefits of the objective measurement of fluid status in hemodialysis patients.

Subtle fluid imbalance can cause poor clinical outcomes among hemodialysis patients. However, the traditional subjective assessment of fluid status may be inadequate. We evaluated whether the objective measurement and optimization of fluid status could be beneficial for hemodynamic and biochemical parameters in hemodialysis patients. We enrolled 120 hemodialysis patients, who were clinically euvolemic for at least 3 months. Based on the results of a body composition monitor, we divided the patients into the following two groups: the hyperhydrated group (post hemodialysis fluid overload ≥ 1.1 L

Fluid type influences acute hydration and muscle performance recovery in human subjects.

BACKGROUND: Exercise and heat trigger dehydration and an increase in extracellular fluid osmolality, leading to deficits in exercise performance and thermoregulation. Evidence from previous studies supports the potential for deep-ocean mineral water to improve recovery of exercise performance post-exercise. We therefore wished to determine whether acute rehydration and muscle strength recovery was enhanced by deep-ocean mineral water following a dehydrating exercise, compared to a sports drink or mountain spring water. We hypothesized that muscle strength would decrease as a result of dehydrat…

Perinatal exposure to Aroclor 1254 disrupts thyrotropin-releasing hormone mRNA expression in the paraventricular nucleus of male and female rats.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are industrial pollutants that act as endocrine disruptors and alter thyroid function. However, it is still unclear whether PCBs can affect hypothalamic thyrotropin releasing hormone (Trh) mRNA expression through TH signaling disruption. As salt-loading dehydration induces tertiary hypothyroidism in the hypothalamic parvocellular paraventricular nuclei (paPVN), and perinatal exposure to Aroclor 1254 (A1254) disrupts the hydric balance in rats, we hypothesized that TRH synthesis could be altered during dehydration in TRH neurons that control the hypothalamic-pit…

Efficacy and safety of empagliflozin: a "real-world" experience from Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are new agents for treating type 2 diabetes. In addition to the glycemic benefits, these agents provide cardiorenal protection in patients with diabetes and without diabetes. There is consistent evidence that these agents increase the risk of genitourinary infections and dehydration, but randomized controlled trials have not included patients from the Middle East. OBJECTIVES: Determine the efficacy and safety of empagliflozin, specifically whether the genitourinary infection risk differs in our population and whether there is an in…

Determinants of the sensation of thirst in terminally ill cancer patients.

While a sensation of thirst causes severe distress for a certain proportion of cancer patients in the terminal stage, the factors contributing to this symptom have not been established. To clarify the association between sensation of thirst and medical factors, especially dehydration, a cross-sectional observational study was performed on terminally ill cancer patients receiving inpatient hospice care. On admission to a palliative care unit, 88 consecutive patients underwent blood sampling and were requested to rate the intensity of thirst on a visual analogue scale (VAS). Physicians prospecti…

An effective rehydrating formula for reconditioning dried, irreplaceable heart specimens for teaching.

Formalin-fixed whole heart specimens are essential for studying the anatomy of congenital heart defects. Because of the improvement in diagnostic imaging and treatment, and cultural transition, heart specimens with congenital heart defects have become more and more rare and irreplaceable but are at risk of accidental deterioration through dehydration during long-term storage. In this article, we share our experience in reconditioning our inadvertently dehydrated heart specimens using a simple Formol-Glycerol solution that allowed for rehydration and recovery of such specimens.

Central atrial natriuretic factor reduces vasopressin secretion in the rat.

Atrial natriuretic factor (ANF, Arg 101-Tyr 126; 0.5 and 2.5 micrograms) administered into the lateral cerebral ventricle of conscious euhydrated and dehydrated rats resulted in a significant reduction in the plasma vasopressin concentration. The effect of ANF on vasopressin secretion was greater in the water-deprived animal. Central ANF was without effect on mean arterial blood pressure in both euhydrated and dehydrated rats. The data suggest that ANF occurring in the central nervous system may be important in the control of vasopressin secretion.
