Comparison and reproducibility of three methods for maxillary digital dental model registration in open bite patients.

OBJECTIVE: To compare and assess the reproducibility of 3 methods for registration of maxillary digital dental models in patients with anterior open bite. Settings and sample population Digital dental models of 16 children with an anterior open bite in the mixed dentition were obtained before (T1) and after 12 months of treatment with bonded spurs (T2). METHODS: Landmarks were placed on all T2 models and 3 registration methods (R1, R2 and R3) were independently performed by 2 observers. R1 was based on 10 landmarks placed on posterior teeth. R2 was based on 5 landmarks on the palate (2 anteri

A Comparative Analysis of Recombinant Human Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 with a Demineralized Bone Matrix versus Iliac Crest Bone Graft for Secondary Alveolar Bone Grafts in Patients with Cleft Lip and Palate: Review of 501 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar cleft reconstruction using iliac crest bone graft is considered standard of care for children with complete cleft lip and palate at the time of mixed dentition. Harvesting bone may result in donor-site morbidity and additional operating time and length of hospitalization. Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP)-2 with a demineralized bone matrix is an alternative bone source for alveolar cleft reconstruction. The authors investigated the outcomes of rhBMP-2/demineralized bone matrix versus iliac crest bone graft for alveolar cleft reconstruction by reviewing p

Is It Safe to Re-Harvest the Anterior Iliac Crest to Manage Le Fort I Interpositional Defects in Young Adults With a Repaired Cleft?

PURPOSE: Re-harvesting the anterior iliac crest to obtain autogenous bone grafts is a controversial practice. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and associated disability of re-harvesting the anterior iliac crest. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To address the research purpose, the authors executed a retrospective case series study. The sample consisted of young adult patients with cleft (<26 yr old) with prior harvesting of the anterior iliac crest during mixed dentition for management of an alveolar cleft(s) and then re-harvesting of the same donor site for management of interpos

Analysis of midface retrusion in Crouzon and Apert syndromes.

BACKGROUND: Midface retrusion is the hallmark of the syndromic dysostoses (i.e., Crouzon and Apert). Lack of forward projection and/or structural deficiency could be responsible, but neither has been adequately assessed three-dimensionally. The authors examined both the cranial base/facial interface and the midface volume to provide an understanding of the etiopathogenesis of midface deficiency. METHODS: Children with computed tomographic scans in the absence of any surgical intervention were included. Demographic information was recorded for three groups: Apert, Crouzon, and control. Scans w

In-vitro comparison of 2 cone-beam computed tomography systems and panoramic imaging for detecting simulated canine impaction-induced external root resorption in maxillary lateral incisors.

INTRODUCTION: The introduction of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in dentomaxillofacial radiology has created new diagnostic challenges, including some potential opportunities for evaluating impacted teeth. The diagnostic accuracy for detection of simulated canine-induced external root resorption lesions in maxillary lateral incisors was compared between conventional 2-dimensional panoramic radiographic imaging and two 3-dimensional CBCT systems. METHODS: A child cadaver skull in the early mixed dentition was obtained from the Department of Anatomy, Hasselt University, Diepenbeek, Belgiu

Unilateral distalization of a maxillary molar with sliding mechanics: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: A unilateral Class II relationship could arise due to early loss of an upper second deciduous molar on one side during the mixed dentition period. This would allow the mesial drift of the molars, which may block the eruption of the second premolar. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 15-year 8-month-old male patient presented with a Class II molar relationship on the right, and Class I canine and molar relationship on the left side. His E was extracted when he was 5 years old. The 54 were impacted and the 3 was ectopically positioned due to the space loss from the mesial migration of the 76.

Transforming Growth Factor Beta Receptor 2 (TGFBR2) Promoter Region Polymorphisms May Be Involved in Mandibular Retrognathism.

Skeletal malocclusions are common phenotypes in humans and have a strong influence on genetic factors. Transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) controls numerous functions of the human body, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration. Thus, this study is aimed at evaluating whether genetic polymorphisms in TGFB1 and its receptor TGFBR2 are associated with mandibular retrognathism in German children and adolescents. Children and teenagers older than 8 years in the mixed or permanent dentition were included in this study. Patients with syndromes and facial trauma and patients wit

Accelerated development of the first and second mandibular molars after distraction osteogenesis of the mandible in patients with hemifacial microsomia.

Although distraction osteogenesis of the mandible in patients with hemifacial microsomia (HFM) before the mixed dentition period is widely performed, long-term follow-up information on dental problems is limited. We evaluated the long-term effect of distraction osteogenesis on dental development by comparing Nolla's developmental stages of the first and second molars between the affected and unaffected sides of the mandible. Forty-five patients with unilateral HFM who received distraction osteogenesis of the mandible between the ages of 5 and 8 years and whose dental status was followed for mo
