Effect of Particulate Matter in Atopic Dermatitis through HDACs and Filaggrin Alteration.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a skin condition that can be exacerbated by particulate matter (PM). The primary causes of AD are believed to be impairments in the skin barrier, such as filaggrin (FLG) abnormalities. Although there is substantial evidence for genetic factors contributing to AD, it is challenging to attribute the disease's predisposition solely to genetics. We hypothesize that PM may induce epigenetic modifications in AD, impacting FLG expression. Here, we assessed histone deacetylases (HDACs) and FLG levels under AD conditions with or without exposure to PM using qRT-PCR, western bl

Association of atopic dermatitis with thyroid diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) and thyroid diseases share features of immune dysregulation, but their association has not yet been comprehensively analyzed. We aimed to systematically investigate the association of AD with thyroid diseases. A systematic review and random-effects model meta-analysis of observational studies was conducted. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL for relevant studies until April 12, 2024. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. A subgroup analysis based on age was performed. Twelve observational studies with 93,547,813 subjects were included. The

Basic Emollients for Xerosis Cutis in Atopic Dermatitis: A Review of Clinical Studies.

Xerosis cutis (dry skin) is a common and burdensome symptom of atopic dermatitis (AD). Topical emollients restore skin hydration and barrier function through the physicochemical properties of their nonactive constituents (e.g., glycerol, urea, lactic acid, liquid paraffin, petrolatum) and represent the mainstay of basic therapy for xerosis cutis associated with AD. Newer "emollients plus" containing active ingredients may expand the treatment options available to patients with AD; however, we believe that basic emollients remain an important strategy for the long-term management of xerosis cut

Efficacy and Safety of Abrocitinib and Dupilumab in the Treatment of Moderate-to-Severe Atopic Dermatitis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate efficacy and safety of abrocitinib and dupilumab in the treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 104 patients with moderate-to-severe AD (January-June 2023) was conducted. Patients received either oral abrocitinib 200 mg/day (n = 51) or subcutaneous dupilumab 300 mg every 2 weeks (n = 53, baseline load 600 mg) for 24 weeks. RESULTS: At 4, 8, and 12 weeks posttreatment, patients in the abrocitinib group exhibited significantly lower Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) scores compared to the dupilumab group (P < .05).

Molluscum contagiosum with atopic dermatitis: a clinical retrospective study of 2,278 children.

OBJECTIVE: The dissemination of Molluscum contagiosum (MC), a prevalent pediatric cutaneous viral infection, is enhanced upon atopic dermatitis (AD) or compromised epidermal barrier function. However, the potential influence of AD on the course of MC remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of AD on MC treatment outcomes. METHODS: In this clinical retrospective study, we enrolled children with MC and divided them into control (patients with MC alone) and observation (patients with both MC and AD) groups. Parameters such as sex, age, treatment sessions, and treatment d

Staphylococcus Strains in Atopic Dermatitis in Children: Toxins Production and Resistance Properties.

Staphylococcus spp. skin colonization is involved in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD). While coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus strains are known to worsen symptoms, the role of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) remains controversial. Further research is needed to clarify the pathogenicity of CoNS in AD patients. A study involving 329 children with AD (mean age: 4.89 years) assessed the frequency of staphylococcal colonization on affected skin, along with the toxin-producing properties and antibiotic resistance of isolated strains. Mild AD: Predominantly colonized by CoNS

Molecular analysis of cutaneous yeast isolates in the mycobiota of children with atopic dermatitis.

The skin of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) has a greater diversity of mycobiota. An observational, prospective, cross-sectional, analytical, and comparative study was conducted involving 80 patients with AD Group (ADG) and 50 individuals without AD (wADG) in a tertiary hospital in Brazil. Skin scale samples were collected from the frontal, cervical, fossae cubital, and popliteal regions and identified using molecular biology techniques. The results showed that 47.5% of ADG had identified yeasts compared to 0% of wADG (P < .001). The yeasts Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Candida parapsilosi

[Inflammatory dermatoses in children and adolescents : Diagnosis and treatment of atopic dermatitis and psoriasis].

Atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis belong to the most common inflammatory dermatoses that we treat in everyday clinical practice. AD manifests in more than 70% of cases before the age of 5 years. Approximately one-third of psoriasis patients report on onset of disease in the first two decades of life. Here, we are going to review both disorders in the light of pediatric dermatology. We are going to discuss selected subtypes and present clues for further examination with respect to the differential diagnoses and comorbidities. The article provides insight into current therapeutic developments
