Immunohistochemical investigations were carried out to determine the pattern of distribution of methionine- and leucine-enkephalin-like materials in the cat pylorus, duodenum, ileum and proximal and distal colon. The present results indicate that leucine-enkephalin-like materials are less densely distributed than methionine-enkephalin-like materials, but that the two patterns of distribution show some similarities. Gastrointestinal angiodysplasia is a cause of gastrointestinal bleeding in the elderly, for which surgery has been the only treatment. Estrogen has been reported beneficial in some cases in the past decade. Recurrent bleeding due to angiodysplasia occurred from the small intestine in a 75-year-old woman, and from the right colon in a 91-year-old man. The diagnoses were made by angiography in the first case and colonoscopy and erythrocyte- scanning in the second. In the present study we analyzed the expression of prolactin receptors (PRLR) in human digestive tissues by immunohistochemistry. PRLR immunoreactivity was primarily localized in the cytoplasm. However, in some organs (liver and salivary glands) a nuclear positivity was also found. The liver was used as control and showed a diffuse immunostaining in the parenchymal cells. Under normal dietary conditions in which the phosphorus (P) intake of ruminant animals is adequate, the absorption of phosphate (Pi) ions takes place from both the fore-stomachs and the small intestine. The rate of Pi absorption from the latter appears to be at least three times greater than that from the former. When absorption of Pi ions from the reticulorumen is severely reduced, as in dietary P deficiency, the absorption of both calcium and magnesium ions from the reticulorumen becomes impaired. Thus, dietary P deficiency may play a role in the aetiology of acute grass tetany.

A rare case of gastrointestinal hemorrhage is presented. The cause of bleeding was ulcer of the descending duodenum due to erosion of an impacted gallstone. Oral endoscopy made possible a preoperative diagnosis and, pushing the gallstone, made surgery easier. The patient underwent enterolithotomy and had a completely uneventful course.

Prognosis in patients with Chagas disease is related to systemic involvement. 43 asymptomatic chagasic subjects, 28 males and 15 females aged 28 to 85 years, were subjected to electrocardiograms and upper and lower gastrointestinal radiological studies. 23 patients (53%) had evidence of involvement of at least one organ. Duodenal leiomyoma represents a very unusual cause for acute gastrointestinal bleeding. The authors report the case of a 49-year-old male with a massive bleeding from an ulcerated duodenal leiomyoma involving the ampulla of Vater. An emergency Whipple's pancreaticoduodenectomy was carried out under suspicion of local malignancy. It is emphasized that the proper diagnosis of smooth muscle tumors is often difficult, both clinically and from the pathological point of view.
