Measures and correlates of resilience.

OBJECTIVE: We collected data on several aspects of resilience and related them to personal perceptions of breast cancer risk and worry about cancer. METHODS: As part of an ongoing series of studies to examine women's needs for and responses to breast cancer risk counseling, women with a family history of breast cancer (n = 357) completed questionnaires as part of their ongoing follow-up for counseling interventions. The questionnaire contained several measures of resilience: Optimism, the Life Attitude Profile-Revised, and single item scales measuring the worst to best possible life for past,

The role of somatosensory feedback in dystonia: a psychophysical [correction of psycophysical] evaluation.

Ten patients with idiopathic dystonia and twelve healthy controls were tested with pairs of non-noxious electrical stimuli separated by different time intervals. Stimuli were delivered (i) to the pad of the index finger (same-point condition), (ii) to the pad and to the base of the index finger (same-finger condition) and (iii) to the pad of the index and ring fingers (different-fingers condition). Subjects were asked to report if they perceived single or double stimuli in the first condition and synchronous or asynchronous stimuli in the second and third conditions. STDTs were significantly h

Potency of positive gamma-aminobutyric acid(A) modulators to substitute for a midazolam discriminative stimulus in untreated monkeys does not predict potency to attenuate a flumazenil discriminative stimulus in diazepam-treated monkeys.

In monkeys discriminating midazolam (0.56 mg/kg s.c.) from saline, substitution for midazolam was elicited by various positive gamma-aminobutyric acid(A) (GABA(A)) modulators, including the benzodiazepines (BZs) triazolam, midazolam, and diazepam; the BZ(1)-selective ligands zaleplon and zolpidem; the barbiturates amobarbital and pentobarbital; and the neuroactive steroid pregnanolone. In another group of diazepam (5.6 mg/kg/day p.o.)-treated monkeys discriminating flumazenil (0.32 mg/kg s.c.) from vehicle, these positive GABA(A) modulators shifted the flumazenil dose-effect function to the ri

Changes in the ambulatory activity and discriminative stimulus effects of psychostimulant drugs in rats chronically exposed to caffeine: effect of caffeine dose.

Caffeine is a common psychoactive constituent of coffee, carbonated beverages, and over-the-counter medications. This study examined the effects of chronic caffeine exposure on the behavioral response to acute administrations of psychostimulant drugs on ambulatory activity and on the pharmacological characteristics of nicotine discrimination in rats. Rats were maintained continuously on caffeine added to the drinking water at a concentration of 0.25 or 1. 0 mg/ml that resulted in plasma caffeine concentrations ranging from 0.37 to 5.95 microg/ml. Rats maintained on tap water served as control

Nurses' judgments regarding seclusion and restraint of psychiatric patients: a social judgment analysis.

Clinical judgment of psychiatric nurses was investigated using judgment analysis within the framework of social judgment theory. Nine nurses at a short-term psychiatric care facility made recommendations concerning restraint and seclusion for 80 patients described on paper in terms of 17 characteristics (cues). Nurses generally favored close observation of patients over seclusion and restraint, and information about current behavior and functioning had more impact on nurses' judgments than did patient history. Nurses had good insight into the nature of their own judgments. However, individual

Improving perception of letters and visual structure of language.

Information about letters and the physical structure of language printed in Roman characters was given to children beginning to read. Experimental investigations coupled three alternative graphic modes of printing upper- and lower-case letters with an instructional intervention termed "Alpha-Beta" which provides practice in letter sorting, matching of letters, associative matching, and memory matching. In respect to graphics, Mode A letters were in standard alphabet form. Mode B provided standard letters with each backed by a unique half-tone (Visually Stippled Alphabet); Mode C provided stand

Discriminative stimulus effects of zolpidem in squirrel monkeys: comparison with conventional benzodiazepines and sedative-hypnotics.

The present study examined whether zolpidem, an imidazopyridine with selectivity for benzodiazepine (BZ)/gamma-aminobutyric acid(A) receptors containing the alpha1-subunit, had discriminative stimulus effects similar to typical BZs and other sedative/hypnotic drugs in primates. Squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were trained to discriminate zolpidem (1.0 mg/kg i.v.) from vehicle under a 10-response fixed-ratio schedule of food delivery. Under test conditions, zolpidem (0.1-3.0 mg/kg) increased responding on the drug lever to an average maximum of 90% of total responding. When pretreatment tim

Unconscious letter discrimination is enhanced by association with conscious color perception in visual form agnosia.

Adaptive behavior guided by unconscious visual cues occurs in patients with various kinds of brain damage as well as in normal observers, all of whom can process visual information of which they are fully unaware [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]. Little is known on the possibility that unconscious vision is influenced by visual cues that have access to consciousness [9]. Here we report a 'blind' letter discrimination induced through a semantic interaction with conscious color processing in a patient who is agnosic for visual shapes, but has normal color vision and visual imagery. In seeing the

A history of postponing shock does not appear to alter the discriminative stimulus effects of cocaine.

Previous research has shown that the rate of punished lever pressing of monkeys is typically decreased by cocaine administration. However, cocaine increases punished responding in monkeys with a history of responding maintained by the postponement of shock presentation. This raises the question of whether other behavioral effects of cocaine differ following a history of postponing shock. The present experiment examined whether a history of postponing shock alters the discriminative stimulus effects of cocaine. Three squirrel monkeys were trained to discriminate cocaine (0.56 mg/kg, intramuscul

Automated achromatic contrast and chromatic discrimination sensitivity testing in dysthyroid optic neuropathy.

Our experience of patients with dysthyroid eye disease shows that normal chromatic discrimination sensitivity precludes the diagnosis of optic nerve compression (31 patients), and that clinically confirmed optic nerve compression is invariably associated with decreased chromatic discrimination sensitivity thresholds (8 patients). Dysthyroid patients enrolled in this study underwent automated achromatic contrast and chromatic discrimination sensitivity testing on presentation, with repeat assessment of those patients suspected of developing optic nerve compression. If chromatic discrimination s

Retrograde amnesia and memory reactivation in rats with ibotenate lesions to the hippocampus or subiculum.

The retrograde effects of hippocampal lesions on spatial memory were studied. Rats were given a series of 48 place-navigation trials in an open-field water-maze followed, either 3 days or 14 weeks later, by ibotenic acid lesions of the hippocampus (HPC) or subiculum (SUB), or by sham-surgery (SHAM). Two weeks after surgery they were given a retention test without a hidden escape platform. There was a significant decline in performance with time in the SHAM group, but with the 14-week SHAM group performing significantly better than chance levels, whereas both lesioned groups performed at chance

Lesions of the hippocampal formation but not lesions of the fornix or the mammillary nuclei produce long-lasting memory impairment in monkeys.

A group of tasks sensitive to human amnesia were used to characterize the severity and duration of memory impairment in monkeys following bilateral damage to the hippocampal formation, fornix, or mammillary nuclei. Monkeys with hippocampal formation lesions (which included the hippocampus proper, dentate gyrus, subiculum, posterior entorhinal cortex, and much of the parahippocampal gyrus) exhibited a substantial and lasting memory impairment. Monkeys with fornix transection or bilateral damage to the mammillary nuclei were impaired on the first task administered after surgery (delayed nonmatch

Midazolam cue in rats: effects of Ro 15-1788 and picrotoxin.

The discriminative stimulus effect of midazolam, a short-acting benzodiazepine, was used for testing the effects of drugs thought to act as antagonists at different sites in the proposed benzodiazepine receptor complex. Rats were trained in a standard two-bar operant conditioning procedure with food reinforcers delivered on a tandem schedule. The 0.4 mg/kg dose of midazolam used for training was well discriminated, typically yielding at least 95% correct responding. The benzodiazepine receptor antagonist Ro 15-1788 blocked the discriminative effect of midazolam but did not influence generaliza

[Restoration of discrimination sensitivity after suturing nerves of the upper extremity].

Having examined the discriminational sensitivity with Weber's dividers in 244 patients 1-10 and more years after epineural suture of the median, ulnar and palmar digital nerves, the authors established that this type of sensitivity restored slowly, incompletely and rarely. Discrimination of two points was better restored after suture of the palmar digital nerves, it was worse after suture of the median nerve and was the worst after suture of the ulnar nerve. The factors adversely affecting the restoration of discriminational sensitivity included a high level of damage (upper arm, the upper thi

Effects of the combination of tripelennamine and pentazocine at the behavioral and molecular levels.

The purpose of the present experiments was to determine if the antihistamine tripelennamine potentiates the morphine-like effects of the narcotic-antagonist analgesic pentazocine at the behavioral level or the molecular level or both. At the behavioral level, the effects of pentazocine were determined alone and in combination with tripelennamine in rats trained to discriminate between saline and either morphine or the psychotomimetic narcotic derivative SKF 10,047. The interaction between pentazocine and tripelennamine were also evaluated in the guinea-pig ileum preparation and in the [3H]-nal

Effects of signal processing on intelligibility of speech in noise for persons with sensorineural hearing loss.

A person with sensorineural hearing loss accompanied by recruitment has difficulty in understanding amplified speech, especially when speech is in the presence o competition. Two groups of subjects with sensorineural hearing loss with recruitment were tested at +6 and at O dB signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio at preferred levels for unprocessed speech and for speech processed through a two-band compression/equalization of circuit. In addition, unprocessed key word identification scores were compared to those from use of a hearing aid and of a one-band compression/equalization circuit. Processing a t

Acoustic reflex threshold measurement in hearing aid selection.

Aided speech discrimination scores were obtained for 18 patients with sensorineural hearing loss. Monosyllabic word discrimination lists with a competing message of connected discourse at a signal-to-noise ratio of +10 dB were used as the test stimuli, and measurements were made at four hearing aid gain settings for each subject. One of the gain settings was determined by measuring the acoustic reflex threshold for filtered noise in the ear contralateral to the aided ear. Two other settings were at +/- 10 dB relative to the reflex threshold gain setting; the fourth setting was determined with

Assessment of tolerance to barbital by means of drug discrimination procedures.

This study was designed to determine the relative development of tolerance to the discriminative-stimulus and hypnotic properties of barbital. By selectively reinforcing lever presses only in the presence of one of the drug stated, rats were trained in a Skinner Box to discriminate the effect of sodium barbital (80 mg/kg) injection from that of saline injection. After the rats were well trained, the administration of daily hypnotic doses of barbital (240 mg/kg) for 8 days produced marked tolerance to the hypnotic effect of the barviturate in all animals. The ability of the 80 mg/kg dose to ser

Similarity of suffering: equivalence of psychological and psychosocial factors in neuropathic and non-neuropathic orofacial pain patients.

The degree to which neuropathic and non-neuropathic pain conditions differ in psychological and psychosocial status remains largely unexplored. A better understanding of these aspects would be of considerable benefit in helping to define whether similar psychological treatment strategies (eg, cognitive-behavioural therapy) can be adopted in the management of neuropathic pain as in non-neuropathic pain conditions. Chronic orofacial pain disorders present a unique opportunity to compare nociceptive and neuropathic pain in the same body region. Twenty-four patients with trigeminal neuropathic pai

Characteristics Associated With High-Impact Pain in People With Temporomandibular Disorder: A Cross-Sectional Study.

High-impact (disabling) pain diminishes the quality of life and increases health care costs. The purpose of this study was to identify the variables that distinguish between high- and low-impact pain among individuals with painful temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Community-dwelling adults (N = 846) with chronic TMD completed standardized questionnaires that assessed the following: 1) sociodemographic characteristics, 2) psychological distress, 3) clinical pain, and 4) experimental pain. We used high-impact pain, classified using the Graded Chronic Pain Scale, as the dependent variable in logi
