Heavy alcohol drinking and related symptoms in a population study of urban men.

An age-stratified random sample of 228 men was selected from the urban districts of Solna and Sundbyberg in Stockholm. Two hundred of these men (90%) underwent a health survey comprising a general medical examination, taking of a medical and social history, blood and urine tests, roentgenography of the heart and lungs, ECG, electroneurography and computed tomography of the brain. The purpose of the present study was to determine alcohol consumption levels and their correlation with symptoms of heavy drinking and with age. The subjects were collected according to a rectangular age distribution,…

Dental fluorosis in an area of Kenya with 2 ppm fluoride in the drinking water.

We examined 102 children born and reared in an area of rural Kenya with 2 ppm fluoride in the drinking water for dental fluorosis, using the index developed by Thylstrup and Fejerskov (1978). The prevalence of dental fluorosis was 100%, 92% of all teeth exhibited a TFI score of 4 or higher, and 50% of the children had pitting or more severe enamel damage in at least half the teeth present. The fluorotic changes showed a high degree of bilateral symmetry. The intra-oral distribution of the changes corresponded to the pattern of fluoride-induced enamel changes reported by other investigators in …

An investigation into some cerebral mechanisms involved in schedule-induced drinking in the pig.

When pigs were fed small amounts at regular short intervals (5-10 min), drinking followed each ingestion. This resulted in a greatly increased total water intake (schedule-induced polydipsia: s.i.p.). Injection of angiotensin II into the lateral cerebral ventricle of water-replete pigs on normal feeding also produced a significant increase in water intake. Prior administration of the angiotensin II antagonist, saralasin, attenuated the dipsogenic effect of angiotensin II, but did not modify s.i.p. The tranquilizing drug, azaperone, had no effect on normal water intake and did not modify the re…

The effect of neuroleptic drugs on drinking induced by central administration of angiotensin or carbachol.

The effect of a series of neuroleptic drugs on the drinking response elicited by intracerebroventricular injection of either angiotensin or carbachol into conscious rats was studied. The i.p. injection of haloperidol, cis-flupenthixol, or fluphenazine antagonized both angiotensin-induced and carbachol-induced drinking. When injected into the lateral ventricles, the neuroleptics haloperidol, fluphenazine, cis-fluphenthixol and sulpiride were potent inhibitors of angiotensin-induced drinking, but had little effect on the dipsogenic action of carbachol. Clozapine, administered centrally, antagoni…

[Comparative analysis of the effects of alcoholic drinks of different qualities (author's transl)].

The authors compared the effects of alcoholic drinks rich in fusel oil with the effects of diluted pure alcohol of the same quantity on 19 clinically healthy university students. The investigations utilized EEG and physiopsychic testing methods. The clinical symptoms were observed both under the effect of drinks and in a crapulous state ("hang-over"). It was found that alcoholic drinks rich in fusel oil can produce a more deviating EEG curve, an increased worsening of physiopsychic performance and of clinical and subjective symptoms. The necessity of regular quality control of alcoholic bevera

Asthma induced by sulphur dioxide, benzoate and tartrazine contained in orange drinks.

Of 272 patients with asthma, thirty (11%) gave a history of exacerbations occurring after ingestion, solutions of orange orange drinks. Fourteen of these were given provocation tests by drinking, on separate occasions of sulphur dioxide, sodium benzoate and tartrazine, which are present in all orange drinks. Eight reacted to sulphur dioxide with a fall in FEV1, four to sodium benzoate and one to tartrazine, and four did not react to any of these agents. Three of the benzoate patients were also sensitive to sulphur dioxide. The sulphur dioxide sensitive patients were predominantly young, with e…

Smoking and drinking among the Gypsy and Traveller communities: A population study in England.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gypsy and Traveller communities in the United Kingdom (UK) face substantial health challenges. Smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol likely contribute to health disparities, but there is little national data on the prevalence or heaviness of smoking and drinking among these communities. We aimed to estimate the prevalence and heaviness of smoking and drinking among the UK Gypsy and Traveller communities compared with people from other UK ethnic groups. DESIGN/SETTING: Observational study using data collected between 2013 and 2025 in a series of monthly cross-sectional surv…

A qualitative study of teens' and parents' perceptions of preventing teen drinking and driving.

OBJECTIVE: In the U.S., motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for adolescents ages 15 - 18, and alcohol use increases the risk of crashes. There is a need for greater clarity regarding the factors most effective for behavior change in preventing teen driving after drinking. Given the centrality of teen-parent relationships in influencing teen behavior, understanding the relational dynamics in this context is vital to prevention. To inform the development of more effective prevention programs for teens and parents, this study examines teen drivers' and parents of teen drivers' pe…

Use of machine learning to detect Escherichia coli in drinking water in Bangladesh.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a key indicator of fecal contamination in freshwater and can signal the presence of other harmful bacteria and viruses. The aim of the study is to evaluate the performance of machine learning (ML) tools to detect E. coli in drinking water in Bangladesh using surveillance data under two scenarios: an imbalanced dataset and a balanced dataset. We utilized data from the 2019 Bangladesh Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, which included a total of 6,069 household drinking water samples. We used agglomerative hierarchical clustering with Ward's linkage to identify distr…

Aggression and repeated alcohol drinking-in-the-dark: dissecting subtypes in outbred mice.

RATIONALE: Repeated bouts of alcohol consumption increase the risk for developing alcohol use disorders and influence social dynamics, including aggression. Intermittent, weekly binge-like drinking-in-the-dark (DID) can escalate such intake in mice, potentially altering the trajectory of adaptive social behaviors. OBJECTIVE: To examine individual patterns of alcohol intake over repeated weeks of DID with corresponding measures of offensive aggression in outbred Swiss Webster (CFW) resident mice. METHODS: CFW resident male mice were given 2 h of access to either water or 16% ethanol (w/v) for t…

Effects of energy drinks on repeated sprint performance and cognitive function in athletes.

OBJECTIVE: Energy drinks are often used by athletes before competitions to enhance their performance. Resent research has pointed out that the performance effects of select ingredients have been studied in-dividually, but not in combination with caffeine. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of caffeine, anserine and elderberry on cognitive function and repeated sprint performance of athletes during a high-intensity exercise protocol. METHODS: We employed a double-blind, randomized, counter balanced, and crossover design. Three types of supplements were tested: placebo, caffeine (220

Assessment of early return to drinking in surviving patients with alcohol-associated hepatitis.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent alcohol use is a major determinant of liver-related outcomes in patients recovering from alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH). However, the timing and predictors of return to drinking (RTD) are not well-studied. METHODS: We analyzed alcohol use among patients with AH enrolled in two AlcHepNet multicenter studies: a Phase 2b randomized controlled trial and a prospective observational study. TimeLine FollowBack (TLFB) assessed drinking at each visit. RTD was defined as any alcohol use since the previous visit. The cumulative incidence of RTD was evaluated using the Fine-Gray …

Charged to death: Energy drinks, smart drugs, and sudden cardiac death.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in individuals ≤35 years remains a major challenge for cardiology and forensic medicine, often affecting subjects without prior symptoms. At the same time, the consumption of energy drinks (EDs) and the medical or non-medical use of cognitive enhancers or "smart drugs" (SDs), including methylphenidate, amphetamine derivatives, and modafinil, has increased markedly among adolescents, students, and athletes. This review integrates mechanistic, clinical, epidemiological, and forensic evidence to clarify the role of EDs and SDs as arrhythmogenic triggers, identify at-ris
