OBJECTIVE: To gain a clear idea of the function of middle ears and hearing loss in cleft palate.
METHODS: 59 cleft palate cases, including 117 ears are investigated by tympanogram and hearing threshold.
RESULTS: In 80.4% of patients the function of middle ears are abnormal. 59.4% ears are conductive hearing loss in various degrees.
CONCLUSION: Function of middle ears in cleft palate should be regularly examined as early as possible. If it is secretory otitis media, the tympanostomy pressure equalization tubes should be inserted to compensate inadequate function of the eustachian tube so as …

Ascaris in the middle ear is very rare with very few cases having been reported. We report here two such cases with different presentations.

Mesenchyme cells surround early ossicles in the developing middle ear, then are replaced by space that is created by what has been described as an expansion of the pharyngeal pouch. Cell death has not been considered important in cavitation of chick middle ear (Jaskoll and Maderson [1978] Anat. Rec., 190:177-200), but an uncharacterized form of cell death has been reported to play a major role in cavitation of mouse middle ear (Jaskoll [1977] PhD thesis, CUNY). We investigated whether this uncharacterized cell death is the non-random form known as apoptosis. We examined the middle ear cavitati…

UNLABELLED: Otic blast injury is caused by arrhythmic air blast wave. The perforation of the tympanic membrane is the commonet finding associated with lacerations of mucosa in the middle ear. Makki [6] published 34 cases of myringoplasty after war blast injuries. However, healing of such perforations is common; Kerr [7] noted a healing rate of 83% after the blast injury. The aim of the study was to evaluate different therapic procedures of otic blast injuries. There were 74 patients with bilateral otic blast injuries, who underwent otomycroscopic examination. The following parameters were note…

PURPOSE: The literature illustrates a large number of different techniques for the correction of the prominent ear, and the great variety available is indicative of how difficult it is to achieve satisfactory results in all cases. This report describes a procedure for successfully treating such patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty patients were treated with a surgical procedure creating a new anthelical plica based on the Stenström and Mustardé method and producing an anatomic cavity in the mastoid region where the concha can be repositioned according to the Furnas method. The tension of the…

Benign osteonecrosis (BON) of the external ear canal (EEC), also termed as focal or circumscribed necrotizing lesion, is an infrequent phenomenon with distinctive features and of an obscure origin. Five patients with BON of the EEC presented with aggressiveness and extension of varying degree including involvement of the middle ear. It seems that the disease might have a self limited course (two patients) though, at times, extensive measures including hyperbarric oxygen therapy (one patient) should be applied.

Seven primary tumours of the vestibule and inner ear are described, six schwannomas and one traumatic fibroma. Schwannomas in this situation may occur as sporadic tumours, or may be a feature of neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF-2). In the latter condition they may occur in isolation or in association with, but separate from, schwannomas arising in the internal meatus. Direct extension into the vestibule of an intrameatal vestibular schwannoma is well reported, but extension of an intravestibular tumour into the internal meatus is not described. Traumatic fibromas of the vestibule are rare and the …

High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) provides excellent contrast between osseous structures, air and soft tissue in conjunction with high spatial resolution. Therefore, thin-section HRCT with bone window setting is the method of choice for the examination of the middle ear structures. The indications are acute and chronic inflammatory changes, cholesteatoma and tumor, the "postoperative middle ear", and malformations. In most cases, HRCT enables differentiation between inflammatory changes, cholesteatoma, and tumor. The excellent depiction of subtle osseous details enables the identifica…

Cytoplasmic granules have been demonstrated in epithelial cells from the endolymphatic sac, an extraosseus part of the inner ear located in the posterior cranial fossa. Intravenously infused extracts from endolymphatic sacs in anesthetized rats elicited a potent natriuresis and diuresis without effects on blood pressure, glomerular filtration rate, or lithium clearance. Only a minor kaliuresis was observed. Extracts of dural tissue adjacent to the endolymphatic sacs had no effect. It is concluded that the endolymphatic sac contains as endogenous inhibitor of sodium reabsorption and could be th…

An overview if presented of the prevalence of ear disease and hearing loss in some developing countries. This is followed by a discussion of the causative factors in ear disease and related hearing impairment. General suggestions are made concerning steps that can be taken to reduce ear disease. A specific proposal is made for the training of audiological assistants.

We all encounter them: difficult chronic ears that seem to confound management efforts and that constitute an unrelenting imposition to the patient. Typically these ears have undergone multiple surgeries and are chronically infected. Such cases are commonly associated with residual or recurrent cholesteatoma. Those rare ears that temporarily respond to therapy promptly recur once treatment is withdrawn. Even the most aggressive nonsurgical protocols fail these patients, who exhibit lifelong social and professional incapacity. They seem to ultimately defy resolution. The purpose of this article…

A new technique for the correction of malpositioned ears in congenital or acquired disorders is described. The use of a fascia lata strip makes a rigid fixation of the ear to the pericranium possible without total fixation of the ear in all directions. The configuration of the auricle is not altered, and the scars are inconspicuous.

We describe the replantation of a traumatically severed auricle using microvascular anastomosis to reestablish blood flow to the ear. Microvascular reattachment of the severed auricle occurred 10 hours after the trauma. Postoperatively, adjunctive measures, including anticoagulation and the use of medicinal leeches, were used to relieve venous congestion of the replanted auricle. The replanted auricle healed completely with 100% survival, resulting in an essentially normal-appearing external ear. In the management of a traumatically severed auricle, microvascular replantation should be conside…

Every otologic procedure carries the risk of damage to the inner ear. On the other hand, cholesteatoma and uncontrolled tubotympanic disease can lead to partial or total sensorineural loss, as well as intracranial complications. Our experience of the surgical management of eight patients with an only hearing ear is presented. There were no dead ears in this series and no significant worsening of inner ear function. The air conduction pure-tone average was worse in two patients without change in bone conduction. Of the eight patients, six wear a hearing aid with success and two patients manage …
