Influences of pH and current on electrolytic dechlorination of trichloroethylene at a granular-graphite packed electrode.

Electrolytic dechlorination using a granular-graphite packed cathode is an alternative method for the remediation of chlorinated organic com … affected by current, but it varied with pH value. The pH effects were results of the involvement of electrolytes in the proton reduction and the electron transfer at the cathode. A lower pH value favored TCE dechlorination in potassium chloride, which is an electrolyte that was not involved in cathode reactions with protons and electrons. In ammonium acetate a …

[Influence of autonomic nervous system on electrolyte abnormalities in children with mitral valve prolapse].

Measurement of the heart rate variability enables to assess the activity of the autonomous nervous system. The aim of the study was to evaluate the possible relationship between clinical status, serum sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium concentrations and HRV in children with mitral valve prolapse. The study group consisted of 151 children with MVP (age +/- SD: 12.2 +/- 3.1 years). Thirty patients out of the MVP group were symptomatic and 121 were asymptomatic. The total number of 165 healthy children (age +/- SD: 12.3 +/- 3.7 years) were included into the control group. We ass

Continuous renal replacement therapy: does technique influence electrolyte and bicarbonate control?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Different techniques of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) might have different effects on electrolyte and acid-base control. The aim of this study was to determine whether continuous veno-venous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF) or continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH) achieve better control of serum sodium, potassium and bicarbonate concentrations. DESIGN: Retrospective controlled study. SETTING: Two tertiary intensive care units. PATIENTS: Critically ill patients with acute renal failure (ARF) treated with CVVHDF (n=49) or CVVH (n=50). INTERVENTIONS:

Long QT interval resembling long QT syndrome in a newborn with electrolyte dysbalance.

The Q-T interval by electrocardiogram may be prolonged as a congenital or acquired condition. The congenital form, long QT syndrome (LQTS) is an electrical disorder associated with a high mortality rate. However, in newborns, electrolyte abnormalities are one of the most common causes of a long Q-T interval. We describe a newborn with a prolonged Q-T interval (0.55 secs) and abnormal T waves resembling LQTS. In this case, the patient had an electrolyte disturbance which was effectively treated. This case emphasizes the importance of investigating and distinguishing between the congenital and a

Isospora belli infection and chronic electrolyte disturbance in a child with fetal alcohol syndrome.

We report an 11-year-old boy with fetal alcohol syndrome and immunodeficiency, whose longstanding malnutrition, diarrhoea with steatorrhoea, symptomatic electrolyte loss and eosinophilia were attributed to renal tubular disease and recurrent worm infestation. The symptoms resolved with diagnosis and treatment of infection by the protozoan Isospora belli, although immunodeficiency persisted.

[Serum uric acid level and fractional excretion of urate in fluid and electrolyte disturbances].

Changes in renal urate clearance may reflect altered glomerular dynamics more precisely than other commonly used indices. Extracellular fluid volume expansion is known to be correlated with uricosuria, while volume depletion is associated with decreased urate excretion. The diagnostic usefulness of measuring serum urate levels and fractional excretions of urate in SIADH, incipient diabetic nephropathy, and prerenal azotemia have been reviewed. In SIADH, profound hypouricemia and markedly increased fractional excretion of urate (FEUA) accompany the extracellular fluid volume expansion. In prere

Alpha2-adrenoceptors mediate the effect of dopamine on adult rat jejunal electrolyte transport.

The present study was aimed to characterise the effect of dopamine on rat jejunal electrolyte transport and to evaluate the type of receptors and the intracellular signalling mechanisms involved in the response. Stripped epithelial sheets were mounted in Ussing chambers connected to an automatic voltage current clamp and changes in the short circuit current (microA/cm2) were measured continuously as an index of electrogenic ion transfer. Dopamine (0.1-100 microM) produced a concentration dependent decrease in Isc with an EC50 of 1.4+/-0.1 microM: the effect of dopamine was not changed by propr

[The correction of the water-electrolyte balance and the acid-base status in a severe course of leptospirosis].

The clinical course of grave forms of leptospirosis presents with disorders in the fluid and electrolyte balance and acid-base condition (ABC) which fact necessitates taking prompt action for the condition to be corrected. Correction of disorders in the fluid and electrolyte balance involves employment of glucose and salt solutions, dextrans, and in most severe cases albumin drugs under control of hematocrit values, plasma osmolarity, and 24-h diuresis monitoring. Correction of disorders in the ABC is primarily aimed at alleviating the metabolic acidosis through detoxication by applying specif

Endovascular treatment of ruptured posterior circulation aneurysms using electrolytically detachable coils.

The authors report their experience using electrolytically detachable coils for the treatment of ruptured posterior circulation aneurysms. Twenty-six patients with 28 posterior circulation aneurysms were treated. All patients were referred for endovascular treatment by experienced vascular neurosurgeons. Patients underwent follow-up angiography immediately after treatment, 1 to 6 weeks posttreatment, and 6 months posttreatment. Six-month follow-up angiograms obtained in 19 patients with 20 aneurysms demonstrated that 18 (90%) of the 20 aneurysms were 99 to 100% occluded, one aneurysm (5%) was

The effects of electrolyte, lactate, high-concentrated glucose, and dialysate on peritoneal mesothelial cells.

In order to investigate which component of dialysate is responsible for mesothelial cell damage, we studied the chronic cytotoxicity to mesothelial cells by using four types of solution. Four different types of solution (Ringer's solution, lactate, high-concentrate glucose, and 4.25% Dianeal) were prepared and injected into the abdominal cavity of five ddY-mice, 5 mL every day for one month. The monolayer of the mesothelial cells was carefully removed from the liver surface by the imprint technique. Then, the mesothelial cell damage was evaluated by using trypan blue staining and comparing the

Loop diuretics affect transcellular electrolyte transport in cells of the distal convoluted tubule.

Although loop diuretics act preferentially on sodium chloride absorption in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle in the nephron, high concentrations of some loop diuretics also impair sodium absorption in the distal convoluted tubule (DCT). To characterize further the inhibitory effect of these agents on sodium absorption in the DCT, the action of torsemide and furosemide on cell sodium, chloride and potassium concentrations was examined in individual DCT cells of the kidney cortex and also, for comparison, in proximal convoluted tubule cells. In addition, initial cell uptake rates of

Electrolyte transport in piglets infected with transmissible gastroenteritis virus. Stimulation by verapamil and clonidine.

The effects of clonidine, an alpha 2-adrenergic agonist, and verapamil, a Ca2+ channel blocker, on Na+ and Cl- absorption were studied in stripped jejunal mucosa from control and transmissible-gastroenteritis-virus-infected piglets. All infected piglets developed severe diarrhea 18-24 hours after oral inoculation. Jejunum from infected animals, as compared with control jejunum, had decreased mucosal-to-serosal, serosal-to-mucosal, and net Na+ and Cl- fluxes. Clonidine and verapamil caused a decrease in short-circuit current and stimulation of Na+ and Cl- absorption in control jejunum. In infec

[Water and electrolyte metabolism in the elderly with cardiovascular disease--hormonal aspects in elderly hypertension].

Study I: A retrospective survey of the data base on serum electrolyte measurements in our hospital (approximately 50,000 cases) revealed that the incidence of hyponatremia increased with age. Its major cause in the elderly hospital inpatients with cardiovascular disease was congestive heart failure, frequently accompanied by renal dysfunction and the use of diuretics. Another interesting finding from this analysis was that the use of potassium sparing diuretics were often associated with hyperkalemia in elderly patients whose renal functions were apparently normal based on the serum creatinine
