Efficiency of papain-treated microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti (var. pacifica) as antigen for serodiagnosis of bancroftian filariasis in French Polynesia.

Papain-treated microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti have been used as antigen for indirect fluorescent assay: 0% of non-endemic sera, 8% of healthy exposed Polynesians, 48% of clinical patients and 96% of microfilaraemic subjects were positive by this test. The geometric mean titres were 22, 41, 147 and 605 respectively. Untreated microfilariae were unsuitable for diagnostic purposes. Dirofilaria immitis adult sections showed low reactivity, giving poor discrimination between non-endemic and microfilaraemic sera. The geometric mean titres were 6 and 61 respectively.

Secreted and circulating antigens of the filarial parasite Brugia pahangi: analysis of in vitro released components and detection of parasite products in vivo.

A range of excretory-secretory (ES) antigens have been characterised following in vitro culture of adult Brugia pahangi filarial nematodes in serum-free medium. Analysis by radioiodination, sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and immunoprecipitation of purified macromolecules with antibodies from human and experimental animal infections reveals both host and parasite components. Two host molecules appear by molecular weight and immunoprecipitation analysis to be immunoglobulin and serum albumin, presumed to be taken up from the jird host from which adult worms were recov

Hematological profiles and preventive-practice characteristics among patients with podoconiosis: A case-control study in Musanze District, Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis is a chronic, disfiguring, non-filarial form of lymphedema caused by prolonged barefoot exposure to irritant soil. An estimated four million people are affected globally, with cases documented in more than 32 countries, 18 of which are in Africa. In Rwanda, the disease affects an estimated 68.5 per 100,000 people across all districts. While literature on podoconiosis continues to grow, its hematological abnormalities remain relatively unexplored. METHODOLOGY/ PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This case-control study aimed to investigate hematological profile in podoconiosis patient

Microplanning improves stakeholders' perceived capacity and engagement to implement lymphatic filariasis mass drug administration.

BACKGROUND: Achieving adequate mass drug administration (MDA) coverage for lymphatic filariasis is challenging. We sought to improve stakeholder engagement in MDA planning and increase subsequent MDA coverage through a series of microplanning workshops. METHODOLOGY: Prior to the 2018 MDA, Haiti's Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) and partners conducted 10 stakeholder microplanning workshops in metropolitan Port-au-Prince. The objectives of the workshops were to identify and address gaps in geographic coverage of supervision areas (SAs); review past MDA performance and propose st

Acute Brugian filariasis in a German tourist after short-term travel to Sri Lanka, 2025.

A German traveller developed leg oedema with adenolymphangitis after a 3-week trip to Sri Lanka. Laboratory tests showed slight eosinophilia, positive filarial serology and motile microfilariae in day and night-time blood samples. PCR revealed 99% homology for Brugia malayi. Lymphatic filariasis has been eliminated in Sri Lanka, but zoonotic B. malayi has re-emerged. Physicians need to be alert and consider filariasis as potential differential diagnosis. Surveillance and vector control efforts should be sustained to prevent resurgence in Sri Lanka.

A dynamic game of lymphatic filariasis prevention by voluntary use of insecticide treated nets.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) has been targeted for elimination as a public health concern by 2030 with a goal to keep the prevalence of LF infections under the 1% threshold. While mass drug administration (MDA) is a primary strategy recommended by WHO, the use of insecticide treated nets (ITN) plays a crucial role as an alternative strategy when MDA cannot be used. In this paper, we use imitation dynamics to incorporate human behavior and voluntary use of ITN into the compartmental epidemiological model of LF transmission. We find the equilibrium states of the dynamics and the ITN usage as it dep

Financial hardship among patients suffering from neglected tropical diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis of global literature.

INTRODUCTION: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) mainly affect underprivileged populations, potentially resulting in catastrophic health spending (CHS) and impoverishment from out-of-pocket (OOP) costs. This systematic review aimed to summarize the financial hardship caused by NTDs. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, EconLit, OpenGrey, and EBSCO Open Dissertations, for articles reporting financial hardship caused by NTDs from database inception to January 1, 2023. We summarized the study findings and methodological characteristics. Meta-analyses were performed to pool the prevalence of CHS.

The effects of selected neglected tropical diseases on economic performance at the macrolevel in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as leprosy, lymphatic filariasis (LF), schistosomiasis and onchocerciasis are endemic in several African countries. These diseases can lead to severe pain and permanent disability, which can negatively affect the economic productivity of the affected person(s), and hence resulting into low economic performance at the macrolevel. Nonetheless, empirical evidence of the effects of these NTDs on economic performance at the macrolevel is sparse. This study therefore investigates the effects of the above-mentioned NTDs on economic performance at th

Culex quinquefasciatus Density Associated with Socioenvironmental Conditions in a Municipality with Indeterminate Transmission of Lymphatic Filariasis in Northeastern Brazil.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease associated with poverty and poor environmental conditions. With the inclusion of vector control activities in LF surveillance actions, there is a need to develop simple methods to identify areas with higher mosquito density and thus a higher consequent risk of W. bancrofti transmission. An ecological study was conducted in Igarassu, which is in the metropolitan region of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. The mosquitoes were captured in 2060 houses distributed across 117 census tracts. The vector density index (VDI), which measures the average

Global Health Impact: A Model to Alleviate the Burden and Expand Access to Treatment of Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) receive relatively little research and development but have a tremendous impact on lifespan and livelihood. Here, we use existing data on the need for drugs, their efficacy, and their treatment percentages to estimate the impacts of various regimens on the global burden of several NTDs: schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, and three soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) over time. For an interactive visualization of our models' results, see https://www.global-health-impact.org/. In 2015, our NTD models estimate that treatment averted 2,778,131.7

Mini-TAS as a confirmatory mapping tool for remapping areas with uncertain filarial endemicity to exclude/ include for mass drug administration: A report from field validation in India.

India has targeted elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) through mass drug administration (MDA) by 2027. Mapping of LF endemic areas is a priority for implementation of MDA. Current national LF remapping tool for unsurveyed/uncertain districts, have many limitations. The WHO has recommended a sensitive and rapid remapping protocol (Mini-TAS), that needs validation in Indian setting. Hence, in the present study a comparative assessment of these two protocols (national protocol vs Mini-TAS) was undertaken in two non-MDA districts of Odisha, with unknown filarial endemicity but reporting chron

Mitigating the Public Health Issues Caused by the Filarial Vector, Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) Through Phytocontrol and Larval Source Marker Management.

Failure of conventional mosquito control strategies to curb the population of vectors have made the humans vulnerable to serious medical problems transmitted by them. This effect has been compounded by global climate change enabling the mosquitoes to cross geographical boundaries and cause trouble in regions where they were initially not found. As such, the scientific community has been compelled to devise alternative and innovative strategies of mosquito control that can be integrated with the conventional practices to implement multi-phasic approach of vector management. Culex quinquefasciat

Entomological surveillance reveals transmission of malaria but not lymphatic filariasis in two communities in North-West Nigeria.

Malaria and lymphatic filariasis (LF) are two serious public health challenges in sub-Saharan Africa, and both diseases are transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes. Successful control of both diseases requires detailed information on transmission dynamics; thus, this study investigated malaria and LF transmission indices in two (2) communities (Jidawa and Kargo) in North-West Nigeria. Anopheles mosquitoes were sampled from twenty-five (25) randomly selected houses from each of the two communities using pyrethrum spray collection (PSC). The samples were identified morphologically and molecularly ch
