Preoperative Ultrasound-Guided Stellate Ganglion Block for Prevention of Postoperative Sore Throat After Thoracic Surgery: Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Postoperative sore throat (POST) is one of the most common complaints after thoracic surgery with double-lumen endobronchial tubes (DLTs), significantly impacting postoperative recovery and patient satisfaction, yet it is often overlooked. Stellate ganglion block (SGB), a minimally invasive technique, may alleviate airway inflammation and modulate sympathetic tone. It has significant potential in reducing the incidence of POST, but evidence in DLTs patients is lacking. This trial aims to test whether preoperative ultrasound-guided SGB can ameliorate the incidence and severity of POST

Strangulated transomental hernia in virgin abdomen: laparoscopic surgery with a small laparotomy may be useful to assess the indeterminate viability of the bowel.

A 66-year-old female without prior history of abdominal surgery visited the emergency department with a complain of sudden intensive lower abdominal pain. Closed loop bowel obstruction was discovered on contrast-enhanced computed tomography, leading to a laparoscopic examination of 5 h after the onset. During laparoscopy, 100 cm of distal jejunum with borderline viability was found incarcerated in a gap of the greater omentum. A 3-cm small incision was made at the umbilical trocar site to observe the bowel after it was released laparoscopically. When viewed under the shadowless lamp, the affec

The effects of thyroid hormones on the heart following global ischemia. A clinical and experimental study.

Cardiopulmonary bypass is associated with a reduction in plasma thyroid hormone concentrations in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. However, studies of the effects of cardiopulmonary bypass on thyroid function are limited and many studies report conflicting data concerning only the period of cardiopulmonary bypass. In this study, we tried to clinically determine the effects of cardiopulmonary bypass on concentrations of thyroid hormones by comprehensive thyroid function tests in 10 patients before and after surgery, and observed the benefits of triiodothyronine supplementation after global
