Five decades of tick-man interaction in Denmark--an analysis.

The tick Ixodes ricinus (L.) is a known vector of several zoonotic diseases such as Tick Borne Encephalitis (TBE), Lyme borreliosis and ehrlichiosis. The interaction between humans and ticks are at the very core of our understanding of the epidemiology of tick borne zoonoses, but only few experimental studies have been performed. Hence our understanding of the epidemiology of tick-borne disease has to rest on the assumption that the potential tick activity, which is reflected in tick samples from the vegetation or samples from animals, corresponds with tick-human interaction. Observations whic

Pan-American migraine prevalence: Findings from the Americas' migraine observatory study (AMIGOS).

IntroductionAnalyzing the epidemiology of headache disorders is fundamental for understanding their behaviour and designing effective public health strategies. Epidemiologic studies conducted in individual countries often lack consistent methodologies, limiting broader interpretation. The Americas' Migraine Observatory Study (AMIGOS) is a Pan-American epidemiological study designed to evaluate the burden and access to treatment of migraine and other headache disorders across the Americas. Here, we present data on migraine prevalence and disability.ObjectivesTo describe and compare the prevalen

Molecular investigation on measles cases rise and variants co-circulation in the Lazio region, Italy.

PURPOSE: In 2023-2024, measles cases progressively increased in Europe. Multiple outbreaks were reported and viral strains with three-nucleotide mutations potentially compromising diagnostic testing were identified. We analyzed the first cases of measles reported in Lazio (Central Italy) from September 2023 to March 2024, combining molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis with epidemiological investigation to identify transmission chains and evaluate the sensitivity of PCR tests adopted on circulating viral strains. METHODS: We tested samples collected through routine measles and

The emergence and successful elimination of SARS-CoV-2 dominant strains with increasing epidemic potential in Taiwan's 2021 outbreak.

Taiwan's experience with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in 2003 guided its development of strategies to defend against SARS-CoV-2 in 2020, which enabled the successful control of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases from 2020 through March 2021. However, in late-April 2021, the imported Alpha variant began to cause COVID-19 outbreaks at an exceptional rate in Taiwan. In this study, we aimed to determine what epidemiological conditions enabled the SARS-CoV-2 Alpha variant strains to become dominant and decline later during a surge in the outbreak. In conjunction w

Prevalence of simian malaria among macaques in Malaysia (2000-2021): A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The aim of Malaysia to eliminate malaria nationwide by 2020 seems need to be prolonged. Whilst Malaysia has successfully eliminated human malaria transmission, simian malaria parasites such as Plasmodium knowlesi, P. cynomolgi, P. inui and P. cynomolgi are the emerging cause of malaria in humans. The epidemiological study of simian malaria in primates provides useful information in identifying the risk of human-macaques Plasmodium infection. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This study was performed to gather all available data in terms of simian malaria epidemiology study among mac

African based researchers' output on models for the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases and public health interventions: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Applied epidemiological models are used in predicting future trends of diseases, for the basic understanding of disease and health dynamics, and to improve the measurement of health indicators. Mapping the research outputs of epidemiological modelling studies concerned with transmission dynamics of infectious diseases and public health interventions in Africa will help to identify the areas with substantial levels of research activities, areas with gaps, and research output trends. METHODS: A scoping review of applied epidemiological models of infectious disease studies that invol

Clinical, laboratory and virological data from suspected ZIKV patients in an endemic arbovirus area.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of Zika virus (ZIKV) presents new challenges to both clinicians and public health authorities. Overlapping clinical features between the diseases caused by ZIKV, dengue (DENV) and chikungunya (CHIKV) and the lack of validated serological assays for ZIKV make accurate diagnosis difficult. Brazilian authorities largely rely on clinical and epidemiological data for the epidemiological and clinical classifications of most ZIKV cases. OBJECTIVE: To report the laboratory and clinical profiles of patients diagnosed with Zika fever based only on clinical and epidemiological

Gulf health research.

This update has described how Gulf health research has developed over the past two years. In January 1996, MoD asked the MRC for their assistance in commissioning a programme of research to investigate Gulf veterans' health concerns. The MRC issued a 'Call for Proposals' in May 1996. All proposals were peer-reviewed and detailed applications were invited from a short-list of nine. In October 1996 the MRC recommended to MoD that two epidemiological studies should be funded; one to be carried out by Professor Cherry from Manchester University and the other by Dr Doyle of the London School of Hyg

Candida Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis.

Prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) represents a significant clinical challenge in cardiology and cardiac surgery. Characterized by infection of a prosthetic heart valve, PVE can lead to severe morbidity and mortality, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of its pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, treatment strategies, and preventive measures. This case exemplifies the critical aspects of PVE, emphasizing its impact on patient outcomes and the broader implications for healthcare systems.

Vector-Borne Diseases Potpourri.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has reported that the prevalence of vector-borne diseases has increased in recent decades and that the prevalence of malaria, Lyme disease, dengue, and, in particular, West Nile virus infection are expected to increase further if control measures are not strengthened. (1)(2) This review article summarizes the epidemiology, various clinical manifestations, and management strategies of these vector-borne diseases with increasing prevalence both in the United States and worldwide.

[Isospora belli infection in HIV positive patients: report of two cases and literature review].

Isosporosis is an infection caused by parasitic protozoa of the genus Isospora, coccidia affecting various different vertebrate species, including humans. It is an uncommon infection in our country and it is not a zoonosis. We present two cases of Isospora belli infection in HIV positive patients from the Valparaiso region. We discuss the clinical events caused by this agent, its epidemiology, cases published in the local and foreign literature, as well as its treatment and prevention measures.

Viral hemorrhagic fevers of South America.

This paper reviews the epidemiology and distinguishing features of three viral hemorrhagic fevers (dengue hemorrhagic fever, yellow fever and arenaviral hemorrhagic fever) that have emerged as important public health problems in South America. Although the etiology, natural history and control of the three diseases are different, their clinical manifestations and histopathology findings are similar and can be difficult to differentiate. Consequently, early recognition and correct diagnosis are essential for effective control measures to be initiated.

Clinical/epidemiological analysis of congenital anomalies associated with diaphragmatic hernia.

Several studies have been published on congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), either as an isolated defect or as part of a multiple congenital anomaly (MCA) pattern. Here we present an epidemiological study designed to measure the association between CDH and a group of 17 selected congenital anomalies in an attempt to identify groups of specific defect patterns. This analysis was done using the data from the Spanish Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (ECEMC).

[Solid-phase immunoenzyme analysis of alpha-fetoprotein in human blood serum].

A test system for enzyme immunoassay of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) was developed on the basis of the diagnostic agents manufactured by the N. F. Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. The effect of shielding antibody active centers in sensitization of planes with excessive concentrations of antibodies was detected. The test system was used to measure AFP levels in blood sera of pregnant women. The results may be used for screening pregnant women for the prenatal diagnosis of fetal neural tube.

Divergent trajectories in fatal drug harms across high-income settings: a comparative synthesis of public surveillance indicators, 2015-23.

BACKGROUND: Fatal drug-related harms have risen across high-income countries over the past decade, yet national surveillance systems differ substantially in case definitions, reporting timeliness, and indicator coverage. These differences make it difficult to determine whether observed cross-national differences reflect epidemiological divergence or heterogeneous measurement. METHODS: To address this, we compared public surveillance indicators of fatal drug-related harm across the USA, Canada, England and Wales, and European countries reporting to the European Union Drugs Agency (2015-23), us
