Revisiting the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials.

Despite increasing growth of interest in transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), its underlying mechanisms are still unclear. With m … l, cathodal and sham tDCS (2 mA for 20 min) applied over the visual cortex. Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials (VEP) and their habituation slopes were measured at five time-points immediately before, after and every 15 min following the end of tDCS. Compared to sham, we found no significant tDCS induced after-effects on VEP amplitudes or habituation slopes, …

Ocular and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials elicited by air-conducted, low-frequency sound.

BACKGROUND: Sound is not only detected by the cochlea, but also, at high intensities, by the vestibular system. Acoustic activation of the vestibular system can manifest itself in vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs). In a clinical setting, VEMPs are usually evoked with rather high-frequency sound (500 Hz and higher), despite the fact that only a fraction of saccular and utricular hair cells in the striolar region is available for high-frequency stimulation. OBJECTIVE: As a growing proportion of the population complains about low-frequency environmental noise, including reports on ve

Effects of intensity, attention and medication on auditory-evoked potentials in patients with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia (FM) has been associated to an increased processing of somatosensory stimuli, but its generalization to other sensory modalities is under discussion. To clarify this, we studied auditory event-related potentials (AEPs) to stimuli of different intensity in patients with FM and healthy controls (HCs), considering the effects of attention mechanisms and medication. We performed two experiments: In study 1 (n = 50 FM, 60 HCs), the stimuli were presented randomly within the sequence; in study 2 (n = 28 FM, 30 HCs), they were presented in blocks of the same intensity. We analyzed intens

Effects of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation on motor evoked potentials variability in humans.

Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) obtained from transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) allow corticospinal excitability (CSE) to be measured in the human primary motor cortex (M1). CSE responses to transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) protocols are highly variable. Here, we tested the reproducibility and reliability of individual MEPs following a common anodal tDCS protocol. In this study, 32 healthy subjects received anodal tDCS stimulation over the left M1 for three durations (tDCS-T5, tDCS-T10, and tDCS-T20 min) on separate days in a crossover-randomized order. After the resting mot…

Serial, Visually-Evoked Potentials for the Assessment of Visual Function in Patients with Craniosynostosis.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of craniofacial surgical intervention on the visual pathway's function by comparing pre- to post-operative patterned, visually-evoked potentials (pVEP). A retrospective review was conducted on craniosynostosis patients who had pre- and post-craniofacial surgery pVEP testing. The pVEP measured grade in terms of amplitude latency and morphology of the waveforms. The pre- and post-operative results were compared. The study identified 63 patients (mean age at preoperative pVEP of 16.9 months). Preoperatively, 33 patients (52.4%) had abnormal pVEP. Nine patie…

Why and when to refer patients for vestibular evoked myogenic potentials: A critical review.

Cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs and oVEMPs respectively) are now used by an increasing number of laboratories to evaluate otolith inner ear function and their pathways through the central nervous system. However, the literature is incomplete or unclear as to what information both c- and oVEMPs can add beyond what a good clinical examination can provide, and what other paramedical tests can provide also, and the present review aims to clarify what is known so far. The following review will describe what is known with regards to both c- and oVEMPs and their use.

Functional data analysis of single-trial auditory evoked potentials recorded in the awake rat.

Evoked potentials (EPs) reflect neural processing and are widely used to study sensory perception. However, methods of analyzing EP have been limited mostly to the conventional ensemble averaging of EP response trials to a repeated stimulus, and less so to single-trials analysis. Here we applied a new approach - functional data analysis (FDA) - to study auditory EP in the rat model of tinnitus, in which overdoses of salicylate (SS) are known to alter sound perception characteristically, as the same way as in humans. Single-trial auditory EPs were analyzed, after being collected on a daily basi…

The Clinical Utility of Vestibular-Evoked Myogenic Potentials in the Diagnosis of Ménière's Disease.

Ménière's disease (MD) is a condition that has been proposed over 150 years ago, which involves audiological and vestibular manifestations, such as aural fullness, tinnitus, vertigo, and fluctuating hearing thresholds. Over the past few years, many researchers have assessed different techniques to help diagnose this pathology. Vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) is an electrophysiological method assessing the saccule (cVEMP) and the utricule (oVEMP). Its clinical utility in the diagnosis of multiple pathologies, such as superior canal dehiscence, has made this tool a common method used

A Preclinical Study of Laryngeal Motor-Evoked Potentials as a Marker Vagus Nerve Activation.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a treatment for refractory epilepsy and depression. Previous studies using invasive recording electrodes showed that VNS induces laryngeal motor-evoked potentials (LMEPs) through the co-activation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and subsequent contractions of the laryngeal muscles. The present study investigates the feasibility of recording LMEPs in chronically VNS-implanted rats, using a minimally-invasive technique, to assess effective current delivery to the nerve and to determine optimal VNS output currents for vagal fiber activation. Three weeks after VNS…
