OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effectiveness of a core stability training physiotherapy programme vs. acupuncture for the management of balance and functional capacity impairments of women with Fibromyalgia.
DESIGN: Single-blind randomized controlled trial.
SETTING: Outpatients setting.
SUBJECTS: Women with Fibromyalgia and balance impairment.
INTERVENTIONS: Participants were randomized to a core stability physiotherapy programme group (n = 45), acupuncture treatment group (n = 45) and control group (n = 45) for 13 weeks.
MAIN MEASURES: Measures were taken at baseline (week 0), po

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cardiovascular diseases account for nearly one third of all deaths globally. Improving exercise capacity and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) has been an important target to reduce cardiovascular events. In addition, the American Heart Association defined decreased physical activity as the fourth risk factor for coronary artery disease. Multiple large cohort studies have evaluated the impact of CRF on outcomes. In this review, we will discuss the role of CRF in reducing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent data suggest that CRF has an important rol

INTRODUCTION: Adults with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) have impaired exercise capacity, vascular and cardiac autonomic function, and quality of life (QoL). Specific effects of high-intensity interval or moderate continuous exercise training on these parameters in adults with repaired ToF remain unknown.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty adults with repaired ToF were randomized to either high-intensity interval, moderate intensity continuous training (36 sessions, 2-3 times a week) or usual care (no supervised exercise). Exercise capacity, flow-mediated vasodilation, pulse wave velocity, NT-pr

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Both obesity and peripheral artery disease (PAD) limit function and may work additively to reduce mobility. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a 6-month, center-based walking program on mobility function between adults who are weight-stable obese and nonobese with PAD.
METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis of 2 combined studies taken from previous work. Fifty-three adults with PAD and intermittent claudication participated in 6 months of treadmill training or standard of care. Patients were divided into 4 groups for analyses: exercise nonobese

Muscle weakness and atrophy are key characteristics of the aging adult but can also be found in chronically ill patients with heart failure, cancer, renal failure, and chronic infectious diseases all associated with an accelerated level of muscle dysfunction. Reduced physical activity levels and exercise intolerance increase muscle loss and decrease quality of life in both the aging and heart failure populations. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the effects of aging and heart failure on skeletal muscle function and how exercise training can improve long-term outcomes ass

BACKGROUND: We conducted a secondary analysis to (1) compare changes in mood disorders and quality of life (QOL) among 4 groups of patients with heart failure in a home-based exercise program who had varying degrees of change in their exercise capacity and (2) determine whether there was an association between exercise capacity, mood disorders, and QOL.
METHODS: Seventy-one patients were divided into 4 groups based on changes in exercise capacity from baseline to 6 months: group 1showed improvements of greater than 10% (n = 19), group 2 showed improvements of 10% or less (n = 16), group 3 sho

STUDY DESIGN: Each participant completed an arm-crank ramp exercise test to volitional exhaustion.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the utility of the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) to predict peak oxygen uptake (VO(2)peak) during arm ergometry in able-bodied participants and those with poliomyelitis.
SETTING: University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan.
PARTICIPANTS: In all, 16 able-bodied and 15 participants with poliomyelitis completed an arm-crank ramp exercise test to volitional exhaustion.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The prediction of VO(2)peak is calculated by extrapolating the sub-maximal RPE and VO(2)

BACKGROUND: Although women have been performing increasingly more manual labor in the workplace in the past 2 decades, their physiological responses and gender-based differences in muscle microvascularity during occupational activities have not yet been extensively documented.
OBJECTIVE: This study assessed gender differences and tissue heterogeneity in peripheral circulatory responses from 2 muscle groups during pushing and pulling exercise until volitional exhaustion.
METHODS: In healthy men and women, near-infrared spectroscopy was used to determine peripheral responses, oxygenation, and

Exercise evaluation studies of patients after atrial repair surgery for transposition of the great arteries, as in tetralogy of Fallot, represent only a small fraction of the 3970 Medline references (1966 to mid-1997) concerning this congenital heart lesion. We have abstracted data from 27 studies from 20 institutions reporting on measurements during exercise on work capacity, heart rate response, respiratory gas exchange, or radionuclide/radiographic systemic ventricular ejection fraction measurements in addition to resting pulmonary function measurements. These studies provide almost uniform

UNLABELLED: The objectives of this study were to evaluate radiation dosimetry, biodistribution, human safety, and tolerability of 18F-labeled flurpiridaz (Flurpiridaz) in normal subjects undergoing rest and separate-day exercise or adenosine pharmacological stress PET imaging.
METHODS: 12 normal subjects were injected with 58.5 to 121 MBq (1.58 to 3.27 mCi) of Flurpiridaz intravenously at rest on Day 1 and 57 to 171 MBq (1.54 to 4.61 mCi) during stress on Day 2. Sequential whole-body imaging was performed for 5 hours. Blood samples were collected for up to 8 hours.

A 2-year-old Airedale terrier was presented with exercise intolerance since birth and newly developed chylous pleural effusion. Imaging procedures including echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, and selective angiography revealed an aberrant connection of the azygos vein and the left atrium, a membrane in the right atrium consistent with cor triatriatum dexter, and a patent foramen ovale with right-to-left shunt. Balloon dilation of the membrane in the right atrium seemed to result in transient improvement of exercise tolerance compared with the previous 2 …

OBJECTIVES: To investigate relationships between load tolerance of single leg isometric knee extension and athlete reported knee pain location and severity during the single leg decline squat.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: 175 college basketball athletes (99 women, 76 men) in Alberta, Canada participated at the start of the 2018-19 season. Knee pain location (dichotomized into focal/diffuse pain), and severity (numerical rating scale 0-10) were collected during the single leg decline squat. Athletes completed a standardized single leg isometric knee extension to determine load tole

Emerging evidence suggests that disruption of circadian rhythmicity contributes to development of comorbid depression, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Physical exercise synchronizes the circadian system and has ameliorating effects on the depression- and anxiety-like phenotype induced by circadian disruption in mice and sand rats. We explored the beneficial effects of voluntary wheel running on daily rhythms, and the development of depression, T2DM, and CVD in a diurnal animal model, the fat sand rat (Psammomys obesus). Voluntary exercise strengthened genera

BACKGROUND: Aging decreases ischemic tolerance, while exercise prevents myocardial ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury. The cardioprotective role of high intensity interval training (HIIT), however, is unknown.
METHODS: Accordingly, we investigated 8 weeks (5 days/week, 40 min/day) of HIIT treadmill exercise (60%/90% of VO2 peak) on IR injury in young (2-month) and senescent (20-month) Wistar rat myocardia (N = 10/group). Surgical IR (30 min/120 min) was performed via reversible left anterior descending artery ligation and ECG was analyzed to determine ventricular ectopy during IR period.
