Mandibular condyle is one of the most common sites of injury in the facial skeleton. But many condylar injuries remain undiagnosed. In rare situations, these injuries may result in serious adverse sequel in the patient's growth and development that are more difficult to treat at a later stage. In growing individuals, conservative management results in better functional outcome and good remodelling of the condyle. The aim of this article is to present a case report of a bilateral sub-condylar injury in a young child with a novel concept--an esthetic splint.

Nasal problems in children are very common. The factors that affect the embryologic development have been discussed. Injuries that occur in prenatal, natal, and postnatal periods affect normal development. Prompt treatment of minor injuries is necessary to prevent airway problems later. The "wait and see" attitude toward nasal deformity is ill advised. X-ray findings are not conclusive, as the nasal pyramid in a child is largely cartilaginous. Obstructive nasal breathing can result in facial asymmetry, malocclusion, and cardiopulmonary problems. Allergy and sinusitis are frequently causes of o

The authors report on the case of a 15-year-old boy with Crouzon syndrome (CS) who presented with headache and facial diplegia. He had undergone several craniofacial interventions and a posterior fossa decompression for tonsillar herniation caused by the CS. A ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt had been inserted for hydrocephalus. Emergency computed tomography (CT) disclosed slight dilation of the ventricular cavities compared with their appearance on a baseline CT scan. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a deformed brainstem but no compression at the occipital foramen; there was no apparent expla

Following facial nerve resection in the mouse, a substantial number of neurons reside in an atrophied state (characterized by cell shrinkage and decreased ability to uptake Nissl stain), which can be reversed by re-injury. The mechanisms mediating the reversal of neuronal atrophy remain unclear. Although T cells have been shown to prevent neuronal loss following peripheral nerve injury, it was unknown whether T cells play a role in mediating the reversal of axotomy-induced neuronal atrophy. Thus, we used a facial nerve re-injury model to test the hypothesis that the reversal of neuronal atroph

OBJECTIVE: This paper reports and discusses on the possible etiology of postoperative contralateral facial nerve palsy after uneventful evacuation of a subdural haematoma or hygroma after mild head trauma in two children with pre-existing middle cranial fossa subarachnoid cysts.
RESULTS: Two 14- and 15-year-old boys had prolonged headaches after mild head injuries. CT showed a right-sided middle cranial fossa arachnoid cyst in each patient. In one patient, an ipsilateral subdural haematoma was identified, and in the other, bilateral hygromas were identified. Exacerbation of symptoms required

Orbital injuries are often missed out when they occur concomitantly with other facial bone fractures. Clinical examination and plain radiographic findings alone may prove inadequate in the detection of orbital floor fractures. Refined imaging techniques like CT scans and MRI are immensely helpful in the diagnosis of orbital blowout fractures. A case of 'impure' orbital blowout fracture which went undetected at the time of initial examination and its secondary surgical reconstruction is reported here. This case report emphasizes the importance of careful clinical and radiologic evaluation in or

The nose is the most prominent of all facial structures and is susceptible to many types of trauma. All soft tissue injuries of the nose have the potential to distort its appearance and adversely affect the patient's self-image and self-esteem. Once life-threatening injuries are stabilized, a careful history and physical exam should be completed and treatment individualized. The ultimate objective of treatment is to achieve both functional and cosmetic restoration with timely diagnosis and repair. Immediate nasal reconstruction is ideal when medically possible because this decreases long-term

A case of bilateral vocal cord hematomas caused by a shoulder harness injury is presented. The patient was restrained by a three-point belt system and was involved in a front-end collision. She presented with mild facial and chest injuries and a contusion of the neck. One hour after injury she began to complain of hoarseness without airway compromise. Fiberoptic laryngoscopy showed bilateral true vocal cord hematomas. The patient had an uneventful hospital course and a full recovery. The importance of the mechanism of injury and associated injuries is discussed.

UNLABELLED: Injuries, deformations and tumours of the facial part of skull, oral cavity or neck often hamper or prevent normal food consumption. After surgery of these structures food intake may be decreased due to postoperative wounds, pain, swelling and trismus. The aim of the study was to evaluate nutritional state of patients treated surgically in the craniomaxillo- facial surgery department and determination of factors affecting body weight changes after surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 83 patients operated between 2008 and 2010 in the department of cranio-maxillo-facial

Practical and reliable assessment of facial sensation is critical in plastic and reconstructive surgery given its role in mastication, speech, and communication. The Ten Test (TT), a sensory assessment based on comparison between normal and affected sensation, emerged as an alternative to calibrated monofilaments and has been validated extensively in the upper extremity. The goal of this scoping review was to map the existing evidence regarding TT assessment of facial sensation and identify gaps that warrant further investigation. Seven relevant publications were identified, comprising five cl

Middle ear barotrauma is common in diving. However, facial nerve baroparesis is a relatively rare complication. A dehiscent facial nerve canal may be a predisposing factor to developing this complication. Although there is an increasing number of facial baroparesis cases in the literature, they are likely still under-reported. In order to avoid unnecessary recompression treatments or detrimental effects to a professional diver's career, it is important to consider this in the differential diagnosis while evaluating dive injuries. This case report describes recurrent facial baroparesis in a mil

Management of traumatic facial nerve disorders is challenging. Facial nerve decompression is indicated if 90-95% loss of function is seen at the very early period on ENoG or if there is axonal degeneration on EMG lately with no sign of recovery. Middle cranial or translabyrinthine approach is selected depending on hearing. The aim of this study is to present retrospective review of 10 patients with sudden onset complete facial paralysis after trauma who underwent total facial nerve decompression. Operation time after injury is ranging between 16 and105 days. Excitation threshold, supramaximal

Facial nerve palsy results in the loss of facial expression and is most commonly caused by a benign, self-limiting inflammatory condition known as Bell palsy. However, there are other conditions that may cause facial paralysis, such as neoplastic conditions of the facial nerve, traumatic nerve injury, and temporal bone lesions. We present a case of facial nerve palsy concurrent with a benign cystic lesion of the temporal bone, adjacent to the tympanic segment of the facial nerve. The patient's symptoms subsided after facial nerve decompression via a transmastoid approach.

BACKGROUND: Airway management in maxillofacial injuries presents with a unique set of problems. Compromised airway is still a challenge to the anesthesiologist in spite of all modalities available. Maxillofacial injuries are the result of high-velocity trauma arising from road traffic accidents, sport injuries, falls and gunshot wounds. Any flaw in airway management may lead to grave morbidity and mortality in prehospital or hospital settings and as well as for reconstruction of fractures subsequently.
METHODS: One hundred and seventy-seven patients of maxillofacial injuries, operated over a …

Four hundred and thirty-two patients with fractures of the facial skeleton, treated in our Department, were studied in relation to the cause, site and the connection of such injuries to fractures of the skull and other sites of the skeleton (limbs, etc.). The conclusions were: (a) The incidence was higher in men than in women, with ratio 3.6:1; (b) Most patients were in the 3rd decade of life, followed by those in the 4th and 2nd; (c) The leading cause encountered was traffic accidents (66%), other accidents at home and work, interpersonal violence and sporting injuries. Of the traffic acciden

Spastic paretic hemifacial contracture (SPHC) is a rare clinical phenomenon characterized by facial weakness and simultaneous well-sustained contraction of the unilateral half of the face, mimicking a paresis of the normal contralateral side on casual inspection. We present three cases with such phenomenon and have postulated the underlying mechanisms. One patient had intrinsic brainstem glioma, and the others were operated for extra-axial lesions compressing the pons. The former presented with SPHC, whereas the latter two gradually developed this phenomenon following postoperative facial pare

Blindness in patients suffering maxillofacial trauma is usually caused by optic nerve or optic canal injuries. It is, however, an uncommon complication of facial trauma, with a reported incidence of only 2 to 5 percent. Blindness may also follow surgical repair of facial fractures. Many mechanisms, such as intraoperative direct nerve injury, retinal arteriolar occlusion associated with orbital edema, or delayed presentation of indirect optic nerve injury sustained at the time of the initial trauma, have been implicated in causing this blindness. In this article, four cases of visual loss after
