Effects of chronic mild food restriction on behavior and the hypothalamic malonyl-CoA signaling pathway.

Depression induces anorexia, leading to suppressed feeding behaviors and energy intake. Previously, we revealed that chronic social defeat induced a mild suppression of feeding in rats with elevated levels of hypothalamic malonyl-CoA which regulates feeding. Therefore, we attempted to elucidate the effects of chronic mild food restriction on behavior and on hypothalamic malonyl-CoA. The chronic mild food restricted rats were fed a restricted diet approximately 80% to 90% amount of diet compared to the control for 5 weeks. Ratios of restriction were adjusted with feed consumption in the chronic…

Constant light induces alterations in melatonin levels, food intake, feed efficiency, visceral adiposity, and circadian rhythms in rats.

Melatonin levels, metabolic parameters, circadian rhythm activity patterns, and behavior were observed in rats subjected to a 12-h/12-h light/dark cycle (LD) compared to animals exposed to continuous dark (DD) or continuous light (LL). LD and DD animals were similar in melatonin levels, food intake, relative food intake, feed efficiency, water intake, circadian activity levels, and behavior. LL animals had lower melatonin levels in the subjective dark compared to LD and DD animals. Food intake, relative food intake, and water intake values were lower and feed efficiency was more positive in LL

Functional interaction between nociceptin/orphanin FQ and alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone in the regulation of feeding.

Nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ), an endogenous agonist of the opioid N/OFQ (NOP) receptor, increases food intake when administered centrally. As N/OFQ is part of a larger neural network that governs consummatory behavior, presumably its orexigenic properties stem from interplay with other neuropeptidergic components of the feeding-related circuitry. One such peptide may be the ligand of the melanocortin-3 and -4 receptors, alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), which is known to inhibit food intake. The aim of the present study was to establish whether there is a functional "interact

Genomic signatures of convergent shifts to plunge-diving behavior in birds.

Understanding the genetic basis of convergence at broad phylogenetic scales remains a key challenge in biology. Kingfishers (Aves: Alcedinidae) are a cosmopolitan avian radiation with diverse colors, diets, and feeding behaviors-including the archetypal plunge-dive into water. Given the sensory and locomotor challenges associated with air-water transitions, kingfishers offer a powerful opportunity to explore the effects of convergent behaviors on the evolution of genomes and phenotypes, as well as direct comparisons between continental and island lineages. Here, we use whole-genome sequencing …

Biting behavior and seasonal variation in the abundance of Anopheles minimus species A and C in Thailand.

We measured the seasonal abundance and bloodfeeding behavior of species A and C of the mosquito Anopheles minimus Theobald 1901 in an endemic malarious area of western Thailand. An. minimus s.l. is a major vector of human malarial and filarial parasites in Southeast Asia. Mosquitos were collected once a month for one year using four collection methods: human-baiting indoors, human-baiting outdoors, human-baiting in the forest, and cow-baiting. We found that both species A and C tend to feed from cows rather than humans; we did not find any preference for indoor, outdoor or forest-biting in eit…

A bed nucleus of stria terminalis microcircuit regulating inflammation-associated modulation of feeding.

Loss of appetite or anorexia associated with inflammation impairs quality of life and increases morbidity in many diseases. However, the exa … matory signals. Our results demonstrate that these neurons mediate bidirectional control of general feeding behaviors. These neurons inhibit the lateral hypothalamus-projecting neurons in the ventrolateral part of BNST to regulate feeding, receive inputs from the canonical feeding regions of arcuate nucleus and parabrachial nucleus. Our data therefore define a BNS …

Feeding specific glutamate surge in the rat lateral hypothalamus revealed by low-flow push-pull perfusion.

Substantial evidence implicates the lateral hypothalamus (LH) in the control of ingestive behavior and previous studies have found that glutamate release within the LH increases during meals. It is not known, however, whether this effect is selective for feeding, or whether similar changes are also seen during drinking. In this work, we examined this question using low-flow push-pull perfusion which allows sampling from small tissue volumes. Presentation of highly palatable solid or liquid foods to food-deprived rats resulted in an immediate increase in glutamate output of more than 200% over

Tamoxifen-induced anorexia is associated with fatty acid synthase inhibition in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus and accumulation of malonyl-CoA.

Fatty acid metabolism in the hypothalamus has recently been shown to regulate feeding. The selective estrogen receptor modulator tamoxifen ( … l-CoA levels suggests a link between hypothalamic sex steroid receptors, fatty acid metabolism, and feeding behavior.

Feeding rhythm and ornithine decarboxylase activity in hereditary microphthalmic rats.

The effects of congenital absence of visual input on daily rhythms of feeding behavior and tissue ornithine decarboxylase activity were examined in hereditary blind rats. Food intake of normal and hereditary microphthalmic rats was determined every 3 h over 48 h under a 12 h-12 h light-dark cycle. Normal rats took their daily food mainly during the dark period, with two clear peaks in the evening and morning, but hereditary microphthalmic rats ate continuously, suggesting that the feeding rhythm of the hereditary microphthalmic rats is not entrained by the light-dark cycle due to a lack of the…

Appetitive search behaviors and stereotypies in polar bears (Ursus maritimus).

Stereotypies in captive animals have been defined as repetitive, largely invariant patterns of behavior that serve no obvious goal or function. Stereotypies are commonly attributed to boredom or stress and are typically treated by enriching captivity with distracting, appealing stimuli. These stimuli often include food presented at times other than regular feedings, and as a result, engage species-typical foraging behaviors that reduce stereotypies. The present work on captive polar bears is based on the view that stereotypies are due in part to inadequate support for the expression of species

Middle-aged mice show delayed and destabilized food-anticipatory circadian activity under restricted feeding.

Mice are nocturnal and normally feed during the night; however, timed daily feeding can markedly alter behavioral and physiological rhythms. A well-known example is food-anticipatory activity (FAA), characterized by increased locomotor activity before feeding. In this study, we examined age-related effects on FAA under temporally restricted feeding (RF). Male C57BL/6 J mice aged 12 weeks and 54 weeks were maintained under a 12:12 light-dark cycle and subjected to a 4-h daily RF schedule. Wheel-running activity, feeding timing, intake, and body weight were monitored. Under ad libitum conditions

Stimulation of dopamine D4 receptors in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus of male rats induces hyperphagia: involvement of glutamate.

Obesity is a serious worldwide health problem, affecting 20-40% of the population in several countries. According to animal models, obesity … sms involved in the activation of D4R in the PVN and its modulatory action on glutamate release and feeding behavior have remained unexplored. To fill this gap, we characterize the behavioral and neurochemical role of D4R in the PVN. In behavioral experiments, we examined the effects of activation of dopamine D4 receptors in the PVN on food intake and on the behav …

Novel OA-ICOS Sensor for Real-Time Quantification of Enteric Methane from Ruminants.

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas, with livestock rumination being a significant contributor to global emissions. This study developed a real-time monitoring system utilizing Off-Axis Integrated Cavity Output Spectroscopy (OA-ICOS) to simultaneously track rumination behavior and CH4 concentrations in cattle breath. By optimizing the off-axis integrated cavity structure and implementing a specialized environmental control system, we enhanced stability and detection accuracy, achieving a rapid 3 s response time to dynamic concentration changes. Incidence and duration of breast-feeding in Mexican-American infants, 1970-1982.

The Mexican-American component of the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HHANES-MA) was used to examine the breast-feeding behavior of 2402 infants born between 1970 and 1982. The proportion of infants ever breast-fed increased substantially in recent years. Weighted proportions were 30.7% for 1970-1974, 38.1% for 1975-1978, and 47.6% for 1979-1982. By use of logistic regression models, children born into households with a college-educated head were shown to be more likely to be breast-fed than were other children; breast-feeding was also positively associated with birth weight.…

Impacts of Sprouted Barley on Performance and Carcass Ultrasound Measurements in Angus-Influenced Steers During Backgrounding.

The objective of this research was to determine the impacts of including sprouted barley (SB) in the diets of backgrounding beef steers. Angus-influenced steers (328 ± 6.59 kg) were assigned to one of four diets (n = 15/diet): a control (CON) diet, or a diet containing 5%, 10%, or 20% SB (DM basis)-replacing corn silage and some rolled barley. Individual intake and feeding behavior were monitored using Vytelle bunks. Body weight (BW) and ruminal fluid samples were collected on d 0, 30, and 60, while dry matter intake (DMI), feeding behavior, average daily gain (ADG), and gain-to-feed ratio (G:…

Retention of Sweet Taste in Sirenians Reflects Ecological Adaptation in Marine Mammals.

Taste perception is vital for animal survival. Among marine mammals, whales and pinnipeds have lost all sweet and umami taste receptor genes, whereas sirenians (manatees and dugongs) have retained them. The leading hypotheses for taste loss in marine mammals involve feeding behavior, dietary shifts, and high sodium concentrations. To characterize the evolution of sweet taste in sirenians, we analyzed the complete repertoire of sweet taste receptor genes (Tas1r2 and Tas1r3) and their coding sequences in 53 mammal species. Among marine mammals, only sirenians possessed intact sequences for both …

Therapeutic potential of ghrelin/GOAT/GHSR system in gastrointestinal disorders.

Ghrelin, a peptide primarily secreted in the stomach, acts via the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR). It regulates several physiological processes, such as feeding behavior, energy homeostasis, glucose and lipid metabolism, cardiovascular function, bone formation, stress response, and learning. GHSR exhibits significant expression within the central nervous system. However, numerous murine studies indicate that ghrelin is limited in its ability to enter the brain from the bloodstream and is primarily confined to specific regions, such as arcuate nucleus (ARC) and median eminence (ME)…
