The Relationship Between Infant Feeding Outcomes and Maternal Emotional Well-being Among Mothers of Late Preterm and Term Infants: A Secondary, Exploratory Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Late preterm birth is associated with lower rates of breastfeeding and earlier breastfeeding cessation than term birth. PURPOSE: The objectives of this secondary analysis were to compare the incidence of exclusive breastfeeding after late preterm and term childbirth and to examine the association between infant feeding outcomes and maternal emotional well-being. METHODS: Participants were 105 mother-infant dyads (54 late preterm and 51 term) at a southeastern US medical center. Face-to-face data collection and telephone follow-up occurred during 2009-2012. RESULTS: Late preterm

Antiviral drug valacyclovir treatment combined with a clean feeding system enhances the suppression of salivary gland hypertrophy in laboratory colonies of Glossina pallidipes.

BACKGROUND: Hytrosaviridae cause salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH) syndrome in some infected tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae). Infected male and female G. pallidipes with SGH have a reduced fecundity and fertility. Due to the deleterious impact of the virus on G. pallidipes colonies, adding the antiviral drug valacyclovir to the blood diet and changing the feeding regime to a clean feeding system (each fly receives for each feeding a fresh clean blood meal) have been investigated to develop virus management strategies. Although both approaches used alone successfully reduced the virus load a

Immunomodulatory effects of feeding with Bifidobacterium longum on allergen-induced lung inflammation in the mouse.

BACKGROUND: The intestinal microbiota has important effects on host immune responses and feeding with certain commensal organisms has anti-inflammatory effects in a variety of diseases, including experimental asthma. The aim of the current study was to examine how robust the effects of feeding with the commensal strain, Bifidobacterium longum (Bif) were on the pulmonary responses to allergen sensitization and challenge. METHODS: BALB/c mice were given two intraperitoneal injections of ovalbumin (10 μg in alum) on days 0 and 7 and were fed daily with Bif or vehicle from days 0-14. Challenges w

Perforation of the small bowel after insertion of feeding jejunostomy: a case report.

Feeding jejunostomy has become a useful method of feeding many patients with upper digestive tract dysfunction from a variety of causes. Although problems infrequently do occur with the tube itself, such as dislodgement or obstruction, most patients tolerate the procedure well. We report here a case of perforation of the jejunum that was caused by the tube itself and required reoperation. As with many problems in surgery, careful attention to technical details should help prevent this and other problems after feeding tube insertion.

The nutrition profile and utility of banana puree as a liquid thickener for medically complex infants with dysphagia.

INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia among infants, particularly high-risk and preterm neonates, poses feeding challenges that can impact multiple systemic outcomes and delay hospital discharge. Limited therapeutic options for approved thickening agents for human milk and infant formula necessitate the exploration of alternatives, including banana puree. METHOD: This study investigated the feasibility of using banana puree as a thickening agent for hospitalized infants with dysphagia. The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) flow test determined optimal volumes of banana puree m

Review: How Forage Feeding Early in Life Influences the Growth Rate, Ruminal Environment, and the Establishment of Feeding Behavior in Pre-Weaned Calves.

The provision of forage to pre-weaned calves has been continuously researched and discussed by scientists, though results associated with calf growth and performance have remained inconsistent. Multiple factors, including forage type, intake level, physical form, and feeding method of both solid and liquid feed, can influence the outcomes of forage inclusion on calf performance. In the current review, we summarized published literature in order to get a comprehensive understanding of how early forage inclusion in diets affects calf growth performance, rumen fermentation, microbiota composition

Comparison of Feeding Strategies for Infants With Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome are at risk for growth failure, particularly after stage 1 procedures. The effect of continuous enteral feedings on weight gain has not been previously investigated. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was performed in infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and single ventricle variants after stage 1 procedures. Eligible infants were randomized to a continuous and intermittent feeding regimen or an exclusive intermittent feeding regimen after stage 1 procedures and continued until hospital discharge. Anthropometric measures a

Formula versus donor breast milk for feeding preterm or low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND: When sufficient maternal breast milk is not available, alternative sources of enteral nutrition for preterm or low birth weight infants are donor breast milk or artificial formula. Donor breast milk may retain some of the non-nutritive benefits of maternal breast milk for preterm or low birth weight infants. However, feeding with artificial formula may ensure more consistent delivery of optimal levels of nutrients. Uncertainty exists about the balance of risks and benefits of feeding formula versus donor breast milk for preterm or low birth weight infants. OBJECTIVES: To determine

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) given for poor feeding in at-risk infants also improves their motor abilities.

PURPOSE: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that may improve oromotor skills when paired with feeding in at-risk infants, but effects on other motor function and how motor function relates to white matter (WM) microstructure are unknown. METHODS: In this prospective study, infants failing oral feeds and slated for gastrostomy tube (G-tube) placement received taVNS paired with bottle feeding daily for 2-3 weeks. The effects of taVNS-paired feeding on general and specific head movements were investigated using the Specific Test o

Intestinal obstruction secondary to enteral feedings in burn trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Enteral feeding is preferred for maintaining gut integrity and providing nutrition in trauma patients. Recent reports suggest that use of early enteral feeds is successful and that complications are rare. A recent burn patient, who suffered apparent bowel obstruction and perforation secondary to enteral feedings, led us to review our experience with mechanical complications of tube feedings. METHODS: We searched our registry of patients treated for acute burn trauma injury and identified patients treated for acute bowel obstruction in the past 3 years. RESULTS: Four patients were

Effect of initiating enteral protein feeding on whole-body protein turnover in critically ill patients.

BACKGROUND: Critically ill patients are susceptible to protein catabolism. Enteral feeding may ameliorate protein loss, but its effect is not well characterized in terms of protein kinetics. OBJECTIVE: We established a method of quantifying the effect of enteral protein feeding on whole-body protein turnover and studied critically ill patients receiving early enteral nutrition. DESIGN: In a proof-of-concept study, we established, in healthy subjects (n = 6), a method of measuring the effect of continuous enteral protein feeding on whole-body protein turnover by using ¹³C-phenylalanine (¹³C-P

Continuous versus bolus intermittent intragastric tube feeding for preterm and low birth weight infants with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

BACKGROUND: Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is a particularly common condition among preterm and low birth weight infants. These infants are more likely to have excessive regurgitation, as they do not have a fully developed antireflux mechanism. Preterm and low birth weight infants who are unable to suck oral feeds are required to be fed via an intragastric tube for varying lengths of time. Intragastric tube feeding can be delivered by the intermittent bolus method or by the continuous feeding method. Use of continuous or intermittent bolus intragastric feeding may have a positive or negativ
