BACKGROUND: Patellar complications following endoprosthetic reconstruction can occur as a result of anatomic, physiologic, and surgical reasons. Patellar impingement on tibial polyethylene is a complication of distal femoral replacement, and it is frequently related to inaccurate restoration of the joint line and to soft-tissue contracture. Clinical, histological, and genetic studies of two cases of isolated fibro-osseous lesions of the femur in adults show the overlap between monostotic fibrous dysplasia (MFD) of the proximal femur and the so-called liposclerosing myxofibrous tumor. The two cases highlight how the incomplete understanding of the natural history of MFD may result in diagnostic pitfalls or incorrect classification of individual lesions.

We report on a case of primary peritoneal adenocarcinoma diagnosed after histological examination of a femoral hernia sac. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of primary peritoneal adenocarcinoma detected incidentally during repair of a femoral hernia.

Two cases of vascular tumors of large vessels with intraluminal growth simulating venous thrombosis and arterial occlusive disease are reported. One was a borderline malignant epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the femoral vein and the other a malignant epithelioid angiosarcoma of the carotid artery. Immunohistochemical studies permitted to classify the tumors. Treatment consisted in surgical resection. No recurrence and no metastasis are noted at 24 months. Uncertainty regarding biological behaviour of vascular tumors and treatment persists.

Thirty-six hips were studied because of significant hip pain. Radiography of the hip and bone scintigraphy showed subtle changes. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed using a 1.5 Tesla superconductive unit. All MRI findings were confirmed by surgical or pathologic results. BACKGROUND: Limb-salvage surgery has been used during the last several decades to treat patients with high-grade bone sarcomas. In the short- and intermediate-term these surgeries have been associated with relatively good function and low revision rates. However, long-term studies show a high rate of soft tissue, implant, and bone-related complications. Multiplanar osteotomy with limited wide margins uses angled bone cuts to resect bone tumors with the goal of complete tumor removal while sparing host tissue although its impact on local recurrence is not known.

PURPOSE: To compare the outcomes of allograft-prosthesis composite for reconstruction after malignant tumors at the distal femur and proximal tibia.
METHODS: Case-control study of 24 patients with distal femur tumor and 21 with proximal tibia tumor. Union of the allograft-host interface was assessed by the International Society of Limb Salvage criteria, and complications according Henderson. Functional outcome was evaluated by the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) score, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) score, and pain by a visual analog scale.
