Influence of symmetrical polychlorinated biphenyl isomers on embryo and fetal development in mice. II. Comparison of 4,4'-dichlorobiphenyl, 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, 3,3',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, and 3,3',4,4'-tetramethylbiphenyl.

Outbred albino (CD-1) mice were given the following biphenyl isomers by gavage in cottonseed oil on Days 6-15 of gestation: 4,4'-dichlorobiphenyl (DCB) at 16, 32, and 64 mg/kg/day; 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (3,4-TCB) at 1,2,4,8,16,32, and 64 mg/kg/day; 3,3',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (3,5-TCB) at 64 mg/kg/day; and 3,3',4,4'-tetramethylbiphenyl (TMB) at 64 mg/kg/day. The mice were killed on Day 18 of gestation, necropsies were performed on the dams, and the fetuses were examined for external, visceral, and skeletal malformations. Although DCB was toxic to the dams at 64 mg/kg/day, development

Transcriptomic changes due to early, chronic intermittent alcohol exposure during forebrain development implicate WNT signaling, cell-type specification, and cortical regionalization as primary determinants of fetal alcohol syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) due to gestational alcohol exposure represents one of the most common causes of nonheritable lifelong disability worldwide. In vitro and in vivo models have successfully recapitulated multiple facets of the disorder, including morphological and behavioral deficits, but far less is understood regarding the molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying FAS. METHODS: In this study, we utilized an in vitro human pluripotent stem cell-based (hPSC) model of corticogenesis to probe the effects of early, chronic intermittent alcohol exposure on the transcriptome

Patterns of gestational weight gain and birthweight outcomes in the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Fetal Growth Studies-Singletons: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate or excessive total gestational weight gain is associated with increased risks of small- and large-for-gestational-age births, respectively, but evidence is sparse regarding overall and trimester-specific patterns of gestational weight gain in relation to these risks. Characterizing the interrelationship between patterns of gestational weight gain across trimesters can reveal whether the trajectory of gestational weight gain in the first trimester sets the path for gestational weight gain in subsequent trimesters, thereby serving as an early marker for at-risk pregnancies

Assessment of pericallosal arteries by color Doppler ultrasonography at 11-14 weeks: an early marker of fetal corpus callosum development in normal fetuses and agenesis in cases with chromosomal anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to determine (a) whether the normal pericallosal vascular map can be visualized using color Doppler ultrasonography in normal fetuses in the first trimester of pregnancy and (b) whether an abnormal pericallosal artery (PA) vascular map can be observed in fetuses with corpus callosum agenesis early in pregnancy. METHODS: In 150 consecutive women undergoing a routine ultrasound examination at 11-14 weeks of gestation in our high-risk pregnancy unit as part of screening for chromosomal abnormalities, a mid-sagittal view of the fetal head was obtained to mea

[The influence of metabolic parameters on fetal development weight in women with type 1 diabetes and homozygotic variant in -2548 G/A of leptin gene and its 668 A/G receptor polymorphism].

INTRODUCTION: Leptin, as many other hormones and metabolic factors, may play a role in fetal development in pregnancy complicated by type 1 diabetes. Different genetic variants in leptin gene and leptin gene receptor may have influence on leptin synthesis in the course of pregnancy and metabolic state of the mother. AIM: To assess the possible influence of metabolic factors on fetal weight in type 1 diabetic subjects with homozygotic variants in leptin gene (-2548 G/A) and leptin gene receptor (668 G/A). METHODS: 30 diabetic and homozygotic subjects (out of 100 diabetic subjects) were qualif…

The silent crisis: investigating the impact of environmental pollutants on embryo-fetal development: a narrative review of the Group of Special Interest for Environment of the Italian Society of Fertility and Sterility and Reproductive Medicine.

PURPOSE: Environmental pollution is a growing global concern, yet its effects on reproductive health remain poorly understood. While numerous epidemiological studies have identified strong associations between exposure to pollutants and adverse reproductive outcomes, the precise biological mechanisms underlying these effects remain elusive. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed by two reviewers using the US National Library of Medicine (NCBI Pubmed) up to August 15, 2025. RESULTS: Chemical and physical contaminants, including endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), particul

Expression of insulin-like factor 3 protein in the rat testis during fetal and postnatal development and in relation to cryptorchidism induced by in utero exposure to di (n-Butyl) phthalate.

Cryptorchidism is a common reproductive abnormality, possibly resulting from abnormal hormone production/action by the fetal testis. Insulin-like factor 3 (Insl3) is thought to be involved in gubernaculum development and transabdominal testicular descent, but its importance is unclear, due partly to lack of suitable Insl3 antibodies. We generated (by genetic immunization) and validated a novel antirat Insl3 antibody, which we used to characterize immunoexpression of Insl3 in rat Leydig cells (LCs) from fetal life until adulthood and its relationship to cryptorchidism. Immunoexpression was stro

BRAIN AND EYE AS POTENTIAL TARGETS FOR IONIZING RADIATION IMPACT. PART IV - FETAL RADIATION-INDUCED BINOCULAR VISION DISORDERS: A PILOT STUDY. IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL CHANGES OF NON/IRRADIATED EYEBALL MUSCLES AFFECTED BY STRABISMUS. EVIDENCE OF A POSSIBLE MECHANISM OF THE STRABISMUS DEVELOPMENT IN PERSONS EXPOSED TO FETAL RADIATION.

UNLABELLED: Strabismus is a significant cause of a decrease in the functional capabilities of the organ of vision, additionally, it leads to the deteriorating quality of life. Orbital factors and nervous system changes may play an important role in strabismus pathogenesis. There are few reports on binocular vision disorders in radiation-exposed persons.Functions of the external eyeball muscles might be disturbed based on the changed coordination process of subcortical nerve structures and due to altered metabolism. A carefully conducted research is necessary to clarify the possible pathogenesi

Gene-specific disruption of endocannabinoid receptor 1 (cnr1a) by ethanol probably leads to the development of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) phenotypes in Japanese rice fish (Oryzias latipes) embryogenesis.

The present study was designed to investigate the probable roles played by cannabinoid (CB) receptors in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) induction in Japanese rice fish (Oryzias latipes). Searching of public databases (GenBank, Ensembl) indicated that the Japanese rice fish genome includes three human ortholog CB receptor genes (cnr1a, cnr1b and cnr2). Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and whole mount in situ hybridization (WMISH) techniques were used to analyze the expression of these cnr genes during Japanese rice fish embryogenesis and also in response to developmental ethanol exposu

Imaging of activated complement using ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide particles (USPIO)--conjugated vectors: an in vivo in utero non-invasive method to predict placental insufficiency and abnormal fetal brain development.

In the current study, we have developed a magnetic resonance imaging-based method for non-invasive detection of complement activation in placenta and foetal brain in vivo in utero. Using this method, we found that anti-complement C3-targeted ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) nanoparticles bind within the inflamed placenta and foetal brain cortical tissue, causing a shortening of the T2* relaxation time. We used two mouse models of pregnancy complications: a mouse model of obstetrics antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and a mouse model of preterm birth (PTB). We found that detection

Antibody repertoire development in fetal and neonatal piglets. XV. Porcine circovirus type 2 infection differentially affects serum IgG levels and antibodies to ORF2 in piglets free from other environmental factors.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is an important pathogen in the porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) and its persistence may be due to dysregulation of systemic immunity. We examined this contention using isolator piglets. We present data on Ig levels in serum and bronchio-alveolar lavage (BAL), on antibody response to PCV2 and to TNP conjugates used as model antigens in 48 PCV2-infected isolator piglets. We compared these to data from TNP-immunized isolator piglets colonized with a probiotic flora, those infected with swine influenza (S-FLU) and those infected with porcine respiratory

The preterm prediction study: effect of gestational age and cause of preterm birth on subsequent obstetric outcome. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the association between prior spontaneous preterm delivery and subsequent pregnancy outcome. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 1711 multiparous women with singleton gestations were prospectively evaluated at 23 to 24 weeks' gestation. Prior pregnancies were coded for the presence or absence of a prior spontaneous preterm delivery. If a prior spontaneous preterm delivery had occurred, the gestation of the earliest prior delivery (13-22, 23-27, 28-34, and 35-36 weeks' gestation) was recorded. Current gestations were categorized as spontaneous preterm delivery at <28, <30
