BACKGROUND: The determination of causative organisms of onychomycosis is still not optimal. There remains a need for a cheap, fast and easy-to-perform diagnostic tool with a high capacity to distinguish between organisms.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether attenuated total-reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy can detect and differentiate causative agents in culture-based, ex vivo nail and in vivo nail models.
METHODS: A methodological study was conducted. Both the ex vivo nail model and in vivo pilot study were carried out in an academic university hospital.

Onychomycosis is a chronic fungal infection of the nails that is largely underdiagnosed in developing countries such as India due to poor health care facilities. In this study, we evaluated the nails of 134 patients with a clinical suspicion of onychomycosis using direct microscopy and fungal culture techniques. BACKGROUND: Digital myxoid cysts (DMC) are often unsightly; they may cause nail dystrophy and are sometimes painful. There is a multitude of existing therapies and recurrences are not uncommon; some treatments may be painful or result in scarring. Infrared coagulation (IRC) produces predictable thermal injury with relative sparing of superficial tissues and represents an alternative treatment modality in DMC.

Acral erythema has been associated with a number of chemotherapeutic agents, but there are no reports of clofarabine-induced acral erythema in the literature. We describe two patients who developed acral erythema after receiving clofarabine. One patient had myelodysplastic syndrome while the other had acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

In this paper the authors study the sites of single lesions in 317 paucibacillary patients registered at the outpatient units of the CMS Jorge Saldanha and the Curupaiti State Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The preferential sites of lesions in the population studied, their relation with age and sex and factors likely to influence their distribution are discussed. The findings are compared with other similar studies performed in Asia and Africa.
