Emotional and cognitive impairments in Parkinson's disease (PD) are prevalent, hamper interpersonal relations and reduce quality of life. It is however unclear to what extent these domains interplay in PD-related deficits and how they are influenced by dopaminergic availability. This study examined the effect of cognitive impairment and dopaminergic medication on neural and behavioral mechanisms of facial emotion recognition in PD patients. PD patients on and off dopaminergic medication and matched healthy controls underwent an emotional face matching task during functional MRI. In addition, a

Pierre Paul Broca studied the brains of patients with articulatory language deficits and reported that articulatory function is localized in the frontal cortex of the left hemisphere. This discovery of functional localization laid the foundation of neuroscience in general and marked the beginning of brain science of language. According to recent reexaminations of the patients' brains, the lesions responsible for apraxia of speech may instead involve the insula or medial fiber connections. Based on the results of functional neuroimaging and lesion studies, we have identified a "grammar center" …

Recent studies of reflex epileptic mechanisms in human epilepsy using advanced methods of neurophysiology and functional neuroimaging have contributed much to elucidate pathophysiological processes of seizure generation. Whereas in lesional focal epilepsies reflex mechanisms usually relate directly to the anatomical focus, in system epilepsies they have helped to define which functional anatomical systems serving physiological function are recruited by the ictogenic mechanisms. Reflex epileptic seizures can often be prevented by avoidance or modification of triggers or by prophylactic benzodia…

BACKGROUND: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is an MRI-based neuroimaging technique that measures brain activity on the basis of blood oxygenation level. This study reviews the main fMRI methods reported in the literature and their related applications in clinical and preclinical studies, focusing on relating functional brain networks in the prodromal stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD), with a focus on the transition phases from cognitively normal (CN) to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and from MCI to AD.

In neuroimaging research, understanding the intricate dynamics of brain networks over time is paramount for unraveling the complexities of brain function. One approach commonly used to explore the dynamic nature of brain networks is functional connectivity analysis. However, while functional connectivity offers valuable insights, it fails to consider the diverse timescales of coupling between different brain regions. This gap in understanding leaves a significant aspect of brain dynamics unexplored in neuroimaging research. We propose an innovative approach that delves into the dynamic couplin

Background: Chronic neck pain (CNP) is highly prevalent and complicated, associated with limited movement, and accompanied by shoulder pain and other clinical manifestations such as dizziness, anxiety, and insomnia. Brain structural and functional abnormalities often occur in patients with CNP. However, knowledge of the brain's functional organization and temporal dynamics in CNP patients is limited. Dynamic functional connectivity density (dFCD) can reflect the ability of brain areas or voxels to integrate information, and could become neuroimaging markers for objectively reflecting pain to a

BACKGROUND: Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an immune-mediated encephalopathy with heterogeneous disease courses. However, clinical characteristics for a prognostication of functional recovery from acute episodes of ADEM remain limited. The study aims to characterize the clinical presentations and neuroimaging findings of children with poor functional recoveries from acute episodes of moderate to severe ADEM.
METHODS: The multicenter retrospective cohort study included children under 18 years of age who presented with moderate to severe ADEM (modified Rankin Scale [mRS] ≥ 3 at

Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in neonates with presumed hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) offers a unique window into the extent and timing of injury, providing valuable insights for neuroprognostication. Brain MRI refines the prediction of functional outcomes, crucial for guiding family counseling and early interventions. The present article focuses on the role of post-rewarming brain MRI in this context, exploring specific MRI findings associated with diverse neurodevelopmental outcomes and highlights the potential of neuroimaging to improve the understanding and prediction of l

During a 20-year period (1980 - 1999) 12 children with isolated congenital unilateral facial nerve palsy were seen at our hospital. The only child delivered by forceps made a full recovery from his palsy within two months, whereas functional improvement in patients with non-traumatic delivery was generally poor. In two patients the palsy affected predominantly the upper periocular region. In 10 children the lower facial region seemed to be mainly involved. Cognitive outcome was within normal limits, with one exception. Conventional neuroimaging was not contributory to the understanding of the

Calculation is one of the higher brain functions, which has been linked to the inferior parietal lobule and part of the frontal lobe. Cases of hypercalculia have been reported, usually in the setting of Autism-Spectrum Disorder or Savant syndrome. We report the case of a 27-year-old male undergraduate who had hypercalculia with normal clinical neurological findings. His brain MRI showed a nonspecific lesion in the right parietal lobe white matter. Further functional neuroimaging is suggested.

Vision loss can occur due to a variety of etiologies along the primary visual pathway. Understanding the anatomic organization of the visual pathway, which spans the globe to the occipital cortex, can help tailor neuroimaging to identify the cause of visual dysfunction. In this review, relevant anatomy and optimization of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging techniques will be described. This will be followed by a discussion of imaging findings related to pathologies at each functional anatomic level.

This paper reviews the structural specificities and functional roles in Brodmann areas 10 and 38. A number of studies have focused on both areas through various approaches including neuropsychology, neuroimaging, psychiatry, neurology, and neurosurgery. Both areas 10 and 38 may have a substantially very complex higher-order cognitive functions, which are quite hard to disentangle. Here, I picked up some fundamental perspectives for reviewing previous studies, to provide efficient research orientations for the elucidation of functions in both areas.

Functional lesion studies have yielded new information about the cortical organization of speech perception in the human brain. We will review a number of recent findings, focusing on studies of speech perception that use the techniques of electrocortical mapping by cortical stimulation and hemispheric anesthetization by intracarotid amobarbital. Implications for recent developments in neuroimaging studies of speech perception will be discussed. This discussion will provide the framework for a developing model of the cortical circuitry critical for speech perception.

The preoperative evaluation of patients with suspected cortical dysplasia involves detailed neurologic and neuropsychologic evaluations, electroencephalography, and comprehensive neuroimaging and functional studies. The goal is to identify a focal region of seizure onset and to assess for motor impairments, speech and language difficulties, or developmental delay. Although the electroencephalogram abnormalities in cortical dysplasia are nonspecific, they typically include unusual high-amplitude (slowing and focal) activity. The association of cortical dysplasia with cardiovascular, dermatologi

BackgroundMigraine attacks are believed to unfold through discrete but interrelated phases, among which the premonitory phase has garnered increasing attention. This early phase, occurring hours to days before pain onset, might reflect neurobiological processes that promote subsequent headache generation. Neuroimaging of experimentally induced attacks enables controlled investigation of the brain mechanisms underlying these early symptoms. This systematic review synthesizes and critically appraises current neuroimaging evidence on the experimentally induced premonitory phase in individuals wit

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) includes different clinical syndromes with distinct patterns of symptoms and neuroanatomical locations of neurodegeneration. However, FTLD is clinically heterogeneous (with overlapping symptoms across several domains) and neuroanatomically heterogeneous (with brain atrophy in different locations in different patients). Traditional methods struggle to fully account for this heterogeneity. In this study, we use a relatively new neuroimaging approach, atrophy network mapping, to localize clinical symptoms in patients with FTLD to
