The role of bacterial vaginosis as a cause of amniotic fluid infection, chorioamnionitis and prematurity--a review.

Antepartum bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy has been related to premature delivery, the recovery of microorganisms from amniotic fluid of women in premature labor with intact membranes, to histologic chorioamnionitis and to the recovery of microorganisms from the placenta or membranes. Microorganisms associated with bacterial vaginosis are commonly recovered from the amniotic fluid and chorioamnion of patients who deliver prematurely. In addition, bacterial vaginosis is associated with maternal infectious morbidity during labor and in the postpartum period. Very little is known of the pathophy

Respiratory and Gut Microbiota in Commercial Turkey Flocks with Disparate Weight Gain Trajectories Display Differential Compositional Dynamics.

Communities of gut bacteria (microbiota) are known to play roles in resistance to pathogen infection and optimal weight gain in turkey flocks. However, knowledge of turkey respiratory microbiota and its link to gut microbiota is lacking. This study presents a 16S rRNA gene-based census of the turkey respiratory microbiota (nasal cavity and trachea) alongside gut microbiota (cecum and ileum) in two identical commercial Hybrid Converter turkey flocks raised in parallel under typical field commercial conditions. The flocks were housed in adjacent barns during the brood stage and in geographically

The Periodontopathic Bacterium Fusobacterium nucleatum Induced Proinflammatory Cytokine Production by Human Respiratory Epithelial Cell Lines and in the Lower Respiratory Organs in Mice.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The most prevalent infectious disease, chronic periodontitis which leads to alveolar bone destruction and subsequent tooth loss, develops due to proinflammatory cytokine production induced by periodontopathic bacteria. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a non-infectious disease, is the third leading cause of death globally. This condition exacerbates frequently, and which is attributable to proinflammatory cytokine production induced by infection by respiratory microorganisms such as Streptococcus pneumoniae. Although a positive association has recently been reveale

Gradenigo syndrome in a child: case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gradenigo syndrome is a rare but potentially serious complication of suppurative otitis media, characterized by the classic triad of suppurative otorrhea, abducens nerve (VI) paralysis, and pain in the trigeminal nerve (V) territory. Although the advent of antibiotic therapy has significantly reduced its incidence, this condition remains relevant, particularly in children, requiring early recognition and appropriate multidisciplinary management. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 13-year-old girl who presented with a painful swelling behind her right ear t

Augmented pathogen detection in brain abscess using metagenomic next-generation sequencing: a retrospective cohort study.

Brain abscess is a severe infection characterized by the accumulation of pus within the brain parenchyma. Accurate identification of the causative pathogens is crucial for effective treatment and improved patient outcomes. This 10-year retrospective, single-center study aimed to compare the detection performance of conventional culture methods and metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in brain abscess. We reviewed 612 patients diagnosed with brain abscess and identified 174 cases with confirmed etiology. The median age was 52 years, with 69.5% males. Culture tests predominately identif

Impact of the COVID-19 era on clinical presentation, management and microbiology in paediatric peritonsillar abscess: A case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is the most common soft-tissue infection of the head and neck. This potential complication of tonsillitis has demonstrated unique microbial trends during the COVID-19 pandemic. This era has resulted in a major shift in the hygiene and social habits of the general population, which has resulted in changes in the presentation, management and microbiology of several infectious diseases. To date, the impact of COVID 19 on PTA microbiology and clinical presentation in the paediatric population has yet to be investigated. DESIGN: Retrospective chart review co

Electrolyzed saline as an alternative to chlorhexidine: Antimicrobial and biofilm volume outcomes in a 4-day non-brushing randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The biofilm-inhibitory effects of electrolyzed saline (EOS) vary widely due to differences in formulations and treatment methods. This study analyzed the impact of EOS on key oral microbial species and used serial 3D-intraoral scans to evaluate its effects on de novo biofilm formation. METHODS: This was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over, 4-day, non-brushing, plaque-regrowth study on periodontally healthy individuals. Each subject participated in three trial arms. During each 4-day arm, the subjects refrained from mechanical oral hygiene. Instead, they rins

Development of antiseptic adaptation and cross-adapatation in selected oral pathogens in vitro.

There is evidence that pathogenic bacteria can adapt to antiseptics upon repeated exposure. More alarming is the concomitant increase in antibiotic resistance that has been described for some pathogens. Unfortunately, effects of adaptation and cross-adaptation are hardly known for oral pathogens, which are very frequently exposed to antiseptics. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the in vitro increase in minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) in oral pathogens after repeated exposure to chlorhexidine or cetylpyridinium chloride, to examine if (cross-)adaptation to antiseptics/antibioti

Bacterial colonization of oral implants from nondental sources.

Implants showing signs of peri-implantitis harbor a microbiota similar to that of periodontitis-affected teeth. This case report describes the subgingival microbiota of a 45-year-old female with advanced periodontitis before and after complete edentulation and reconstruction with dental implants. A 3-month healing period post extraction passed before implants were placed using a two-stage submerged implant protocol. At 4- to 6-month recall visits after definitive prosthetic reconstruction, some implant sites showed bleeding on probing and localized mucositis. Microbiological culture of three i

Oral Microbiome as a Tool of Systemic Disease on Cleft Patients: A New Landscape.

The oral cavity microbiome comprises benign and pathogenic bacteria, with more than 700 species identified. However, the current literature regarding resident bacterial flora in the oropharyngeal cavities in cleft lip/palate (CLP) patients still needs to be completed. This review aims to evaluate the role of the oral microbiome of cleft patients as an indicator in systemic diseases for which cleft patients might be at higher risk in the short or long term. A literature review was performed in July 2020 using Biomedical Reference Collection Comprehensive, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied
