BACKGROUND: The last three decades have seen a series of HIV interventions in sub-Saharan Africa. However, youths still have a mixture of correct and incorrect HIV/AIDS knowledge of transmission routes and prevention strategies. Previous studies have identified parents and peers as the most important socializing agents for youths. This paper assesses the relationships between family structure, family/peer communication about sexuality and accurate knowledge of transmission routes and prevention strategies.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the Cameroon Family Life and Health Survey (CFHS) conduct

As part of a capacity-building research project, this study examined the extent to which caring for people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) affects both professional and personal relationships of nurse caregivers. The data were collected using focus group interviews with 17 female nurses at two Limpopo hospitals. The PEN-3 cultural model was used as a theoretical framework for exploring how nurses balance job demands with family responsibilities. The results generated three themes: the multiple identities nurses experience within their family and professional lives; nurse attitudes related to

BACKGROUND: Currently there is increasing recognition of the need for research in developing countries where disease burden is high. Understanding the role of local factors is important for undertaking ethical research in developing countries. We explored factors relating to information and communication during the process of informed consent, and the approach that should be followed for gaining consent. The study was conducted prior to a family-based genetic study among people with podoconiosis (non-filarial elephantiasis) in southern Ethiopia.

The aim of the present study was to assess local perceptions and practices in regard to opisthorchiasis in a village receiving treatment and health education compared to a village where no intervention was offered. The study was conducted two years after a health education campaign had been carried out. Focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews were performed among 68 men and women. The results of the study show there were distinct differences in perceptions about opisthorchiasis when comparing the two villages. It appears that introducing health education alongside treatment does

Four months after learning breast self-examination (BSE), 169 sorority women assigned to one of three conditions (No Reinforcement, Self-Reinforcement or Peer-Reinforcement) were compared on BSE frequency subsequent to the training. Participants in both of the reinforcement conditions had agreed to a specified reward after each month's BSE, which was either self-delivered (Self-Reinforcement condition) or delivered by a partner (Peer-Reinforcement condition). Analysis of covariance revealed a significant difference among conditions and a Newman-Keuls test demonstrated that participants in both

The effects of sessions, individual characteristics, group behavior, sedative medications, and pharmacological anticipation, on simple visual and auditory reaction time were evaluated with a randomized block design. The project involved 4 separate small groups of 5 to 9 healthy young adults who met 4 times for 9 hr. over 4 mo. and received 4 drug regimens under controlled conditions. Attitudes toward the experiment, which were mainly related to an early fear of potent drugs and late feelings of weariness, markedly affected reaction time. This effect decreased the test-retest reliability of the

In response to evolving school nurse roles, the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) evaluated and updated its Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice™ using a three-phase process that included surveys, qualitative feedback, and interest-holder engagement. Among 878 survey respondents, most (80%) were familiar with the Framework and found it useful for guiding practice. Strong evidence of associations was observed between Framework familiarity and school nurse demographics, including licensure (χ2(3) = 21.51, p< 0.001), years of experience (χ2(4) = 58.03, p<0.001), and certi

Cost efficiency of removing third molars in a practice specialising in minor oral surgery was compared to that of a hospital oral surgery department. A total of 100 patients treated in each locality were prospectively audited during the financial year 1989-90. Surgical complexity, waiting time, complications and patient satisfaction were compared. The hospital cases were costed individually and compared to fees received for the patients treated in the practice. The practice fees were also compared to average expenses as assessed by the Dental Rates Study Group Inland Revenue Enquiry. Patients

Cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (c-tDCS) enhances motor skill acquisition and motor learning in young and old adults. Since the cerebellum is involved in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD), c-tDCS may represent an intervention with potential to improve motor learning in PD. The primary purpose was to determine the influence of long-term application of c-tDCS on motor learning in PD. The secondary purpose was to examine the influence of long-term application of c-tDCS on transfer of motor learning in PD. The study was a randomized, double-blind, SHAM-controlled,

INTRODUCTION: Somatoform or somatic symptom disorders ((S)SD) are common and have a negative impact on the patients' health-related quality of life, healthcare use and costs. In primary care, which is central to the management of (S)SD, diagnosis and treatment tend to be delayed. There is a significant lack of evidence regarding the barriers in the diagnostic process of (S)SD in primary care and how interventions should be tailored to address them. The aim of this study is to analyse the diagnostic process in primary care that results in the diagnosis or non-diagnosis of a (S)SD.
