The ultrastructural features of nerve cell bodies and axon profiles within Auerbach's plexus in the stomach, ileum, caecum and colon of the guinea-pig have been examined. Nerve cell bodies have been tentatively classified into nine different types according to their size, distribution of organelles, location and relationship to satellite cells. Guinea pigs immunized with mycelium from Trichophyton mentagrophytes in Freund's complete adjuvant were tested intradermally with the following trichophytin preparations: TrI extracted by ethylene glycol, TrII extracted by phenol and TrII, a commercially obtained preparation fromSächsisches Serumverk KG. In our experience, TrI was found to be superior to the other preparations. It showed signifiicant delayed skin reactions in all sensitized animals and none in the controls. Lymphocyte stimulation test with this preparation (TrI) gave positive results.

The relationship of mitogenic factor (MF) to delayed hypersensitivity was examined in the guinea pig. MF was readily produced in vitro by blood leucocytes from animals sensitized with Keyhole limpet haemocyanin in Freund's complete adjuvant. Such animals exhibited delayed skin reactions and macrophage migration inhibition. Treatment with cyclophosphamide markedly reduced serum antibody but caused no diminution of MF or delayed skin reactions. A migration inhibition response was observed 10, but not 20, days after sensitization by means of incomplete adjuvant.

Following the finding that melanin pigment played a role in the accumulation of ototoxic drugs in the inner ear, an investigation was made of the possible influence of the pigmentation of animals on their susceptibility to the ototoxic effects of drugs. Histamine-induced paw oedema and anaphylactic shock were studied simultaneously in ovalbumin-sensitized guinea-pigs and cinnarizine and flunarizine were evaluated quantitatively with regard to protection from the two types of challenge. Both compounds were markedly more active in preventing lethal anaphylaxis (ED50's of 0.67 and 0.53 mg/kg OR) than in reducing histamine oedema (ED50's of 2.77 and 1.54 mg/kg OR). The high anti-anaphylactic potency after oral administration may be an important finding in view of the therapeutic applications of cinnarizine and flunarizine.

Intracerebral and intraperitoneal inoculation of two guinea pigs with biopsy material from a patient with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease produced a similar fatal encephalopathy characterized by status spongiosus 422 and 512 days after inoculation.
