Multiple Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries Lead to Visual Dysfunction in a Mouse Model.

Visual dysfunction is a common occurrence after traumatic brain injury (TBI). We investigated in this study effects of single or multiple mild TBI on visual function in mice using a closed head injury model that permits unconstrained head movement after impact. Adult mice were briefly anesthetized with isoflurane and given one or three mild TBI with the closed head injury by mechanically engineered rotational acceleration (CHIMERA) device with an interinjury interval of 24 h. Mice were then tested in the Morris water maze, visual cliff, and open field tests from day 19 to day 32 and for visual

Influence of head and neck positions on oropharyngeal seal pressure with Baska mask® versus I-gel™; A randomised clinical study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Oropharyngeal seal pressure (OSP) achieved by a supraglottic airway device holds due importance as it indicates the feasibility of positive pressure ventilation, the degree of airway protection from supra-cuff soiling and also relates to postoperative morbidity. The primary outcome measure was to assess and compare OSP in different head and neck positions with Baska mask® and I-gel™. Secondary outcome measures were to compare peak inspiratory pressure (PIP), exhaled tidal volume (ETV), ease of insertion, time taken for insertion, number of attempts, intraoperative manipula

Trends in helmet use by motorcycle riders in the decades following the repeal of mandatory helmet laws.

Several US states repealed universal motorcycle helmet laws in the 1990s and 2000s. The purpose of this study was to examine national trends in helmet use among adult trauma patients with motorcycle-related injuries. We hypothesized that motorcycle helmet use declined over time. We retrospectively analyzed the National Trauma Data Bank's National Sample Program for 2003-2010. We also obtained data on US motorcycle fatalities reported in the Fatality Analysis Reporting System and population data from the U.S. Census Bureau to calculate motorcycle-related fatality rates over time. A total of 255

Risk factors in motorcyclist fatalities in Taiwan.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of the following factors on rider fatality: rider's age, gender, licensing status, accident liability, use of helmet, alcohol consumption, vehicle class, road conditions, presence of passengers, and passenger injuries. METHODS: Data on motorcycle accidents in Taiwan between 2006 and 2008 were analyzed. A logistic regression model was used to establish a fatality risk model for motorcyclists and investigate high-risk factors for motorcyclist fatality. RESULTS: Higher fatality rates among motorcycle riders correlate with the following factors: male, older, unlic

Continuous positive airway pressure ventilation with helmet in infants under 1 year.

OBJECTIVE: To report the feasibility of helmet use in infants between 1 and 12 months old with acute respiratory failure. DESIGN AND SETTING: Observations were made before and 2 h after helmet CPAP of 6 cm H(2)O. Failure was defined as recourse to intratracheal ventilation. Patient stabilization or improvement was defined as a variation <10% or a decrease >10% in one of the following: respiratory rate, inspired oxygen fraction, or capillary partial pressure of CO(2). Tolerance was assessed by the pain and discomfort score, the systematic search for pressure sores, and the measurement of helme

Protecting military convoys in Iraq: an examination of battle injuries sustained by a mechanized battalion during Operation Iraqi Freedom II.

Improvised explosive devices and mines pose a formidable threat to military convoys traveling in Iraq. This study evaluated battle injuries sustained by a mechanized battalion operating against this threat. The objective was to gain insight into injury profiles and prevention. In the period examined, 32 attacks injured 120 Marines, causing 188 injuries. Upper extremity and head injuries (70%) were common, whereas lower extremity injuries (11%) were rare (as expected, given the threat and the body areas exposed). Shoulder and axilla protectors may be beneficial, but lower arm and hand injuries

Using a Resident-Led School Outreach Program to Improve Knowledge of All-Terrain Vehicle Safety.

BACKGROUND: During the past decade, all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries treated in US emergency departments decreased by 33%, down to approximately 100,000 injuries in 2016. In comparison, the number of children evaluated for ATV injuries in the Children's of Alabama emergency department more than doubled between 2006 and 2016, counter to the national trend. The American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines state that ATV operators should be at least 16 years old; however, children younger than 16 continue to represent almost one-third of all ATV-related injuries nationwide, and nearly all

A prospective pilot cohort analysis of crash characteristics and pattern of injuries in riders and pillion passengers involved in motorcycle crashes in an urban area in Cameroon: lessons for prevention.

BACKGROUND: Low and middle-income countries carry over ninety per cent of the burden of injury related mortality and disability. Motorcycles are gradually becoming a major mode of transportation in Cameroon and other African countries in the absence of an organized public transport. Consequently, the contribution of motorcycle crash to injury-related deaths seems to be on the rise. Currently, data addressing motorcycle crash characteristics, pattern, and severity of motorcycle-related injuries in Cameroon are scarce. We hypothesised that head and limb injuries are the most frequent cause of mo

The rising burden of serious thoracic trauma sustained by motorcyclists in road traffic crashes.

In many countries increased on-road motorcycling participation has contributed to increased motorcyclist morbidity and mortality over recent decades. Improved helmet technologies and increased helmet wearing rates have contributed to reductions in serious head injuries, to the point where in many regions thoracic injury is now the most frequently occurring serious injury. However, few advances have been made in reducing the severity of motorcyclist thoracic injury. The aim of the present study is to provide needed information regarding serious motorcyclist thoracic trauma, to assist motorcycli
